What to do after installing Linux Mint?
Frank Garza · 2023-08-06 09:31
I've been wanting to use GNU and Linux for a long time and some time last week I installed Ubuntu and hated the GNOME interface, I switched to KDE but hated that to, then I just wiped the drive and installed Linux Mint Cinnamon. Now what should I do?

Ctrl + F4 and go back.
Netrunner · 2023-08-06 15:54
Install Ubuntu again and move the panel to the bottom instead of left. Dunno what exactly you don't like there

Yeah I know that but I meant what should I configure to make things better, I already changed some of the icons with MenuLibre and installed Vim and Ranger. Also I'm using Fedora workstation now.

1) Install the VPN of your choice.
2) Install Librewolf. There's a .deb repo so you can update it along with the rest of your stuff.
3) If you have the drive space, VirtualBox is a must.

1. Customize your DE/WM. Try other WMs (like IceWM or Awesome or Ratpoison).
2. Work through this free book (learn to use the CLI/Bash): https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
3. Install a few programs: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications
4. Learn Vim or Emacs. Try both, (both have tutorials) and see which one you like the best

Hello OP here, I installed VirtualBox sometime back but because of the GTK theme I couldn't read the text and it made the entire system crash, I'll try again later when I'm learn more stuff.

I'm planning on using dwm eventually, but I don't think I'm at that stage yet. I already went through the InstallGentoo Wiki I was contributing to the wiki even when I was still using Windows, and I already use Vim. I'm looking for more obscure guides.

Use MATE, kick in the gut the rest, new GNOME is a bad idea. MATE is the most close to a classic desktop.

Install Mullvad browser, it works with VPN or not, and not calls mozilla like librewolf ( check about:networking ). A warning : works like TOR, so have hard edges.

Welcome to a vast and deep tradition!
I recommend you read this:
http://www.catb.org/esr/writings/taoup/html/
GNU is pretty much the opposite of the Unix philosophy, but by historical accident is built on top of it anyway.
The Bandit CTF will help you learn the CLI, it's fun. Just dive in and learn to make your computer do what you want.

It's getting pretty 4chan in here...
Reinstall Ubuntu, and get the Dash to Panel and Arcmenu extensions. This thread was made 6 months ago, but I don't care. It has that classic ADHD OP with all the wit of a 14 year old boy who can't take any advice or do anything on his own. You had no reason to distro hop so many times when you were just starting out

Hello it's me the OP, I am using Artix Linux with runit as the init system now. I am using LXDE for now until I get dwm set up. LARBS didn't work properly.

Vim or Emacs opinion seconded. Best set of text editors ever. Learn VimMotions and never go back.
>>22250
get Lutris as well and learn to install different wine prefixes for your lutris. Most notably proton and GE proton.
If any game on wine ever gives you trouble, try the default lutris wine prefix, plus proton, plus GE proton.
Works for majority of games.

Wipe your entire disk and switch to Arch Linux
Netrunner · 2024-08-17 23:43
You posted in /sec/.
Why not start installing a linux distribution that doesn't ship software with known vulnerabilities? Don't use Ubuntu or Debian derivatives. Use Arch or Fedora.

>I installed Ubuntu and hated the GNOME interface,
Ubuntu isn't a trustworthy distro; Gnome is the PlaySkool version of a desktop.
>installed Linux Mint Cinnamon. Now what should I do?
Use it until you get comfortable with Linux. Then install something better, like Debian or Devuan.
In the meantime read these:

>dwm
dwm is configured by editing the source code. Use more/most/bat/$EDITOR to read the LARBS script and figure out where it pulls the dwm patches. Then just clone the repo and compile it ( or copy the patches to the dir where you have extracted the dwm source code). You should read the dwm website and read about the patches that are linked there.
You need to know a bit of C programming to be able to make your own patches.
>https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/21st-century-c/9781491904428/ (or just read the basics of using git/diff to make patches and learn how to use make)
Also, see DWL: https://codeberg.org/dwl/dwl
Note: dwl is beta quality software!

>Artix Linux with runit
I was kinda disappointment that Artix doesn't support loading Apparmor profiles if you choose Runit (OpenRC works perfectly, though). It's not due to some limitation in Runit. Artix team just decided to not implement a init script for it (despite the fact that Void Linux has a working Runit init script to load all Apparmor profiles). Otherwise, Artix Linux is a great distro!

>The Linux Command Line
It's the best book on Linux CLI. You can grab the latest version of that book from the author's website:
The website has even some extras! My favorite is the Midnight Commander tutorial.
