I want to get a VPN, but I don't trust YouTube or Google with search results
Lord Nikon · 2023-06-13 17:15
Like the title says: I want to get a VPN, but I don't really trust 'mainstream' search engines/sources with giving me the VPN I am looking for.
What I am looking for in the VPN:
- No fat whatsoever (like extra features, password banks, etc.)
- Doesn't keep any logs (if I want privacy, then I want privacy)
- Usuable on multiple devices (this is optional though)

Proton VPN say they don't keep logs and there's also a free option so that's a plus.

I will look into it, but generally free options ring alarm bells for me in regards to shady businesses

Tor and I2P are pretty great for pretty much everything, but mulvad has worked for me after I found the torrent options on I2P limited (but I only use private trackers). Also very easy to buy with cash by mail/xmr, and user-friendly for dummies like me. They've been up for so long I kinda don't trust em against states, but do against selling user data/breeches.
I have no conflicts with state actors, and don't know what I'd do if I had to network while evading them (probably tails from someone else's computer and cross my fingers lol)

I use it for the same thing, love that they take XMR and have a passcode system for accounts where payment details etc. aren't used even for user convenience.
I often see advised, rent a VPS, then put the VPN software on it yourself and connect to that rather than a dedicated service on the logic that such a service is more likely to be a honeypot. But would it really be paranoid to assume that custom software on VPS is also widely monitored for use as VPN? Will the feds really not have backdoors in those servers to look for common VPN software?

You're neglecting the fact that they were ORDERED to do so by a court of law. Either they had to comply or they would have to do what Ctemplar and Lavabit did and shut down.

It's true that they may have had to comply with law that time, though they've shown time and time again that they'd gladly hand over any data, regardless of if they're forced to by court order. I used to use them myself, and I can't deny their quality with both ProtonMail and ProtonVPN, but if you want real privacy they're not the way to go anymore.

You shouldn't be using email to communicate anyway. Not unless someone overhauls the standard.

Mullvad and iVPN are the two options I think are your best bet.
- No account signup since they generate an account number
- Both providers have a good history of acting ethically and not being soykafty, iVPN especially does a good job of this with their blog and website doineedavpn.com. Mullvad was recently raided by authorities, where they demonstrated that they could not turn over logs of their users. The authorities left empty-handed.

- No BS "x-year plan", you pay for whatever period of time you want to at a consistent price.
- XMR accepted.

What other times were they handing over data willingly? I'm genuinely curious, I'm not familiar with such cases.

use mullvad
>simple
>you dont have to give them your email and phone number
>fair price, cheaper than most vpns
>you can pay with crypto or even cash

IVPN, it doesn't have any extra bloat other than the VPN application itself (it has a GUI and Terminal client), it probably doesn't keep logs since it's been audited many times, it can work on 6 devices, but you can also install it on your router, on top of that it's rated the highest by Techlore (ProtonVPN is second) (https://piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=cpjYN8Q7Mz8), the highest by PrivacyGuides (ProtonVPN is third) (https://www.privacyguides.org/en/vpn/#wireguard-support) and it doesn't have any affiliate programs it doesn't pay for reviews and sponsers like ProtonVPN does. If you want a free option, use ProtonVPN.
