Graphene OS?

Bob Arctor · 2023-06-04 00:04
Been thinking about getting GrapheneOS on a Pixel Phone for privacy. Though it is on a Pixel Phone, people say it's one of, if not the most, private option for texting and calling, which is all I need. What is lainchan's opinion on this? Should I do this? Should I use a different mobile setup? What mobile communication medium is the most /sec/?

>>21708 Only a dumb phone would be better than Pixel + GrapheneOS.

It's sad to need to buy Google hardware, but it is basically the only reasonably usable and secure option for a smart phone that i'm aware of. For years I fuarrrked around with other custom roms including lineageos and microg - it was very annoying and the security updates are not reliable enough. GrapheneOS mostly just werks

I'd say give it a shot. It works pretty well in my opinion. Stick with getting the a models as they tend to be cheaper. If you don't get much more out of a phone other than basic usage, there's no benefit to the base or pro models, you might even be able to get one used for dirt cheap. https://grapheneos.org/faq#supported-devices Also remember to consider the device support lifetime. https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-lifetime >>21712 Not really. Dumbphones usually don't let you use stuff like Signal, Orbot, or other privacy/security-enhancing tools. Dumbphones are limited to SMS which is isn't private or secure. And the chic dumbphones that try to present themselves as a cool new fad are a total joke.

>>21708 Might want to look into its community before flashing it.

Without Daniel Micay, the reliability of GrapheneOS is in question. Any GrapheneOS users would be wise to maintain private cicd to continuously build GrapheneOS from source code snapshots with a full audit trail of what source code snapshots were built and hashes of built artifacts.

>>21737 I'll believe Micay is no longer in charge when his goons stop raiding other communities then turn around and try to gaslight everyone into thinking they were the ones who were raided.

>>21736 An understandable concern for sure. >>21738 I think that kind of mentality will persist for a little while. People are generally stubborn and not open to changing their ways. I hope the new project leads will harbor a more positive community going forward. I wouldn't be surprised if Micay is using his 'break' to secretly invade discussions to keep going on his schizophrenic rages, attacking people and gaslighting everyone into feeling sorry for him.
