scary files appearing on my desktop

Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2023-05-11 23:35
I've so far noticed two files I didn't download appear on my computer. One was a book that I didn't know until recently was written by a mass shooter when he was 10 years old. The other is a mystery file that nothing can run not even my code editors. I fear that there is either some troll or some government official trying to coerce me based on my internet habits. The mass shooter book trying to scare me away from interests in the true crime community, and pic related trying to scare me away from my interest in violence in general. I've done a lot of research into violent acts and have spread a lot of north korean propaganda, both of which could get me either red flagged by the government or targeted by white knight trolls. I'm sure they could contain spyware but I don't care too much; I'm not doing anything illegal. Is it at all possible to put files onto someone else's computer without them knowing? What kind of access would you need? Has anyone else experienced anything like this? How screwed am I?

>>21542 >Is it at all possible to put files onto someone else's computer without them knowing? Probably there is malware installed and they can do whatever they like with your computer. You need to reformat your disk and reinstall your OS.

>>21543 damn would that wipe everything or could I do that and still keep at least some of my files
Nguoi La · 2023-05-12 01:26
>>21544 You should obviously bsckup your soykaf (you should already have a backup actually but better late than never),. You should also disconnect the infected device from the internet immediately, and no going into your networking settings in the infected device and turning.it off isn't enough, unplug the ethernet cable and/or turn off or reset your router when you do this. You also must make a bootable usb stick with a clean machine in order to install the OS to be safe. Do you have the habit of running scripts or programs from questionable sources? Do you install stuff with curl | bash? Do you paste stuff into the command line? Lots of ways to go wrong but these are some of the common ones, you being targeted by the government seems unlikely compared to the alternatives.

>>21545 aight bet thanks mate good advice and yeah I run game roms that might be it and I've pasted stuff in the command line at least once
Technician · 2023-05-12 03:07
Upload it to gofile.io or some other file hosting site and post link here.

>>21549 lmao :D >>21546 >roms Check out the internet archives for roms, see if they have it first. if not, then u can dwell in other sites. That's how i usually proceed. Been personally playing a few GBA romhacks and that's where I get my roms.
Tyrell Wellick · 2023-05-12 09:50
>>21549 really? what would be the point of putting that on my computer? is there any reason other than to scare me?
Tyrell Wellick · 2023-05-12 10:24
>>21546 >pasting into the command line Here's why you shouldn't do it: https://www.wizer-training.com/blog/copy-paste Probably obvious to everyone else here, but it doesn't hurt to share. Also another reason why you should disable JavaScript if possible on untrusted websites.

>>21552 >Also, many terminals can be configured not to automatically execute when you paste a "\n" (new line) I think this is the more realistic fix, giving you code to paste into the terminal is extremely common practice for many legitimate sources of information.
Agent Jones · 2023-05-12 18:39
>>21552 Okay, I've been getting into Linux just recently (tipped my toes like four years ago when I dual-booted with Windows, but during the last half a year I've been heavy-using Linux) and this is exactly what I've been doing currently when I'm installing packages/programs from, say Github, for instance. I mean, I usually navigate there (or any random tech news site's article on doing xyz with terminal) on the basis of popularity or general understanding of "shadiness", but this does shine light on how reckless I've currently been. Thanks for the tip, Lain!

>>21542 Sorry OP, you probably need to reformat your disk, just a question, what operating system are you using?
Technician · 2023-05-14 10:11
>>21542 >I'm not doing anything illegal This is the mental trap many people fall into. It doesn't matter if what your doing is legal, if the government doesn't like it they will fuarrrk you over regardless. 8 year old Noura al-Awlaki did nothing wrong, so the US sent special forces to eliminate her. These scary looking files just seem like malware, but don't think the law will protect you from the government.
CumGuzzler420 · 2023-05-14 19:35
>>21582 This soykaf right here. You never actually know what you are doing might be considered illegal or bad by an adversary, or if they just feel like fuarrrking someone over. Someone had sent pics of their topless wife with their baby for a doctor during the pandemic, and Google scanned the image as CSAM and reported him to feds. Even after it was shown to not be illegal, he was put through immense stress and everything in his Google account like his phone plan, contacts, emails etc were all taken away from him.

This sounds like you've got something called a creepy pasta. Youtubers on that topic usually tell you to drop everything you're doing and run. If this is real however, having random manifestos pop up on your desktop would be no glitch and whether it's a troll or fed entrapment (both are very much possible) you can consider your threat level to have been raised substantially, thus act accordingly. The system you are experiencing that issue on is compromised and you should unplug the net and wipe it. Any files you backup might be compromised, too, so keep that in mind. If you've got nothing valuable or critical on that system you can keep it running thoug and see what happens next so determine whether this is automated or part of an active monitoring. Your local network will likely be under threat and possibly compromised, too. If you suspect active monitoring and have spare devices then you can set them up as decoys to test the nature of the attack. Be extremely cautious with logging into anything critical. If you need to check whether your online banking, social media, etc. is compromised, you should better check that from a safe device from a network you trust. Yours possibly can't be trusted for the time being. Be smart, careful and good luck, lainanon. >>21586 The sentiment of their post holds true, however.
Jim Hilger · 2023-05-14 22:05
>>21587 Samelain here, Forgot to add, that if you happen to be in the crosshair of an active attack, surveillance or entrapment then any new instal of any operating system can be considered potentially compromised, too, since your local network would be known to the attacker and this includes bluetooth peripherals and any IoT devices that are connected to it. And thanks to intel's management engine and amd's equivalent psps it won't even matter if you go with tails os. And if you suspect it's the feds, there's then little you can do besides unplugging entirely from the web or only performing decoy activity in hopes they lose interest and go for someone else to plant stuff on their computers for their next psyop.
Spike Spiegel · 2023-05-15 00:31
Anyone who thinks that this is a fed entrapment is grasping for straws. First off they would drop something way worse than a manifesto or unopenable files in there and secondly they sure as fuarrrk would not drop it where you can see them. You have malware and should reformat bro

Warms my heart to see so many replies yet no one actually wondering whether OP is just trolling or not.

>>22059 It kills the thread or derails it into a "are you trolling" discussion that we've all had a lot. It's more fun and creates more constructive conversation to just assume that it happened, sense it's not really that outlandish.

>>21588 What about ARM CPUs? Do they have an Intel ME equivalent or no?
Agent Jones · 2023-08-13 12:42
>>22271 Actually thinking about it, if you have KDE connect installed on a laptop or something and you don't have it configured right, other people with the phone app on the same network can leave things on your computer. Is this a laptop running KDE that got taken to a public wifi somewhere?
Hououin Kyouma · 2023-11-01 11:21
>>22276 Yes, they do. ARM has what they call TrustZone, similar to intel ME. ARM licenses its TrustZone technology to AMD for their Platform Security Processor (an Intel ME equivalent as you might know).
Nanashi No Gombe · 2023-11-01 22:43
Considering you said you are in the true crime community i assume it was just some zip file you opened that contained these and didnt know they were in the zip file.

Backup your data and format your computer ASAP. When this kind of stuff happens you dont think twice.
