Remove/disable camera and mic from phone

Project 2501 · 2023-03-17 09:09
Any phones with removable or disableable cameras and mics? i need android apps every once in a while, want a spare android phone for this but something with a camera and mic that i can disable. preferrabley when calls are needed, i plug in headphones with a mic and use that. pinephone looked good but no android builds as far as i can tell. need strictly android or compatible with android apps and google play crap but want this thing as locked down as possible. anyone found solution for this?

I mean if you have enough time and autism, you can just desolder the camera. What make and model do you have, and I can find you at least some help in doing something like this.

>>21163 would like to avoid desoldering, need to be able to do this with simple tools, screwdriver at most. any phone is an option, can buy a cheap used android phone if there is a good model with hardware disable camera/mic. i have a pinephone, it has switches to disable hardware, but afaik there is no android builds for it. im also open to other os's on pinephone with waydroid, so long as waydroid works with google apps (in my experience, waydroid works somewhat poorly, but depends on OS, hardward, etc).

>>21167 Would removing the drivers on the phone fit your usecase? You can find which drivers allow access to your webcam via lsmod, and then remove them. This would prevent any program from being able to access the camera. As for the pinephone, looks like you can remove the camera without any desoldering, Just some minor cable disconnecting. >>21168 >Would removing the drivers on the phone fit your usecase? ordinarily it would, but if i run stock android on the device i would think google/vendor auto update would push new drivers eventually, so cant be certain the drivers will stay gone. >As for the pinephone, looks like you can remove the camera without any desoldering, >Just some minor cable disconnecting. See here: thank you for info. dont think i would need to even desolder it though since there is a hardware kill switch on pinephone. my dilemma with the pinephone is that afaik there is no android port available. what i need is a device capable of running android (or lineage/forks with microg) but with no/disabled camera and mic. I am sometimes forced with use android for auth apps, no way around that. given that, im looking for best way to isolate the android device as much as possible since i only need for 1 or 2 apps and use for nothing else.

>>21170 There actually is a GloDroid build for pinephone that is being worked on. It works fairly well right now, you might give it a shot. https://github.com/GloDroid/glodroid_manifest/releases

why don't you just get some utility that holds the mic/camera "in use" so that nothing else can unless you want it to

a thick dot of black paint on the cam. idk about the mic

some phones are designed to kill itself when certain hardware is missing. a gov phone i had a while back was bugging me so i carefully took out the camera, which btw was removable/replaceable so i thought maybe it might work with out it . well it simply ceased to exist

>>21167 i used to have a phone (still do but i completely broke it) which had both the front and back cameras removable if you just opened it up till you got access to the pcb. just detach them from the connector. the microphone(? i think?) was also just soldered directly to the pcb and i desoldered it but afaik you could just cut the cables the phone was some vodafone (? possibly could just be a normal alcatel) branded alcatel that ran android with a removable battery. it was also pretty small so
