Are there any "background check" or "criminal record" websites that aren't total and complete scams? Looking for regular public records should not be this hard.
I'd even get a subscription service if these things didn't all look like massive fuarrrking scams.

I'm curious to learn about this as well.

I see how it makes sense, but what indicates to you that the existing consumer-accessible services are scams? Is there a strong reason to believe that they are? That they just make soykaf up?

You hire a private investigator to do one for you or do the leg work yourself.

you could manually do a lookup of local databases, pay the feds to furnish documentation (around 100USD iirc) and do your own OSINT.
Alternatively find a friend in the police with access to government systems(or a PI who has them like >>20845 said)
The nature of the request matters, since most "people search" sites just have soykafty scrapers and crawlers that aggregate public records and then trade them. You can do official ones for security verification (federal level) that anyone can pay for.
For example, I appear to be a criminal living in another state, living with a woman I have never met. Not sure how the info got mixed up, but it stuck.

You can spend a minute on google/reddit and find the services employers & HR use. This will weed out all the scam and bs offers. I just saw some today in my random research binge. None are free. One thing to check in the fine print is if they require SSN of your target.
Alternatively,
You can go visit your county clerk of court website. Almost all have a digital database. It's free. All you need is a name to input. It will spit out all criminal charges and even traffic citations. But it will only show charges that occurred in that particular county. So if you're looking up someone that's not you, you may have to visit several county clerk of court websites, assuming you know where that person lived previously. This resource is cool because you can sometimes see a lot of internal PDF's associated with the criminal case.
Another way is google the name + mugshot. They're usually indexed by mugshot webmasters. From there you usually can gather the county of arrest and charges involved. From there you can visit the county sheriff website. Most have an inmate database. It's similar to the county clerk of court. That will show further arrest details and all criminal history that person had in the county. Info such as a history of charges, bond amounts, arrest date, release date, time served, mugshot picture.
Have fun.

Without paying it's pretty hard, there are official criminal record documents that you can get from the police website, but you'll need all the data about the person you're trying to search
