Hey not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm a longtime lurker and have always had an interest in tech and more specifically cybersecurity. I'm currently applying for university and my family is advising me to pursue a career in medicine, I'm not disinterested in medicine and in my free time a lot of the research/interests I pursue are related to it, so the prospect of going down that road doesn't bother me either. Almost everyone in my family, including both my parents, are doctors so it makes sense they want this path for me but I'm having a hard time choosing between that and cybersecurity. Should preface by saying that university is free in my country so it's not like I'd take on massive amounts of debt from the long years of getting a medical degree.
If anyone had to make a similar decision at a young age regarding their career path and could offer some advice I'd really appreciate it

iNo one else can make the right decision for you, it's your life. That includes your parents, you should be honest with yourself about what you want to do and what you're good at. I don't know this, so all I can tell you is to think about it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. You are the expert on yourself, and any advice people give you kind of ignores the part involving you rather than some abstract person.
My advice would be that it's probably easier to change careers to cybersecurity than to medicine, though you can probably switch during university without too much trouble depending on where you live.
And also easier to do programming in your spare time than surgery in your spare time. Medicine has more gatekeeping, I guess.

Or apparently you are doing surgery in your spare time? who knows.

Have you started uni yet or are you trying to figure out what you should major in when you go?
My advice would be to double major in both premed and cybersecurity (or comp sci) for a couple years, then decide which, if either, you want to continue pursuing after that. You should also find some cybersecurity professionals and ask what their work actually is like, and ask your parents what their work actually is like.
>>20610 is right. Nobody can make the correct decision except for you. However, since I'm guessing you're about 18 and at that age, this decision probably feels like the biggest most important and stressful decision in the world: take solace in knowing that making the "wrong" decision isn't a big deal. Plenty of people change majors during uni, or change careers later in life. It's really not a big deal.

University is free where I live too.
Same story with medicine, I went with physics because I'm a retard.
Solid school, just found myself thinking of being an engineer the whole time. Will take the enterance exam again.
TLDR I went with what I wanted and still was wrong anon. But I don't regret it. Own your decision though. I suppose I'd regret it so much more if I went with what my family said.
Plus, you dont get to soykaf on other people if you mess up. So that s good. Takes the whining away from your life and you grow up
