What is lainons opinion of bitlocker. Should I use it on my windows machine or go with a different solution?

Like anything else when it comes to security, it depends who your adversaries are. Formatting a partition as ext4 is enough security against your grandmother. BitLocker is (as far as I know) enough security against basically any non-government actor if your passphrase isn't "pu55y". As for government actors, your guess is as good as mine.
I use BitLocker on Windows because my adversary on my Windows machine is only my employer.

Use Truecrypt or Veracrypt.
