So I got a low tier gemini lake chromebook for $40. It's a really solid form factor, tablet mode too. Flashed the latest coreboot and installed fedora as a test. Is this fuarrrking thing now the most secure computing device I've ever owned? Starting to feel fully pilled about these little soykafs. What do I need to know about coreboot-on-chromebook specific security issues and where do I read it?

wtf. After a few days playing with this I'm in love. Tried many distros on it and have been using nothing else. Thinking about using it as an opnsense router sometimes maybe. A cheap, indestructibe terminal that supposedly has an open BIOS and firmware. Why are people not talking about this? People spent days obsessing about pomona clips and thinkpads and this just......exists. Unscrew one screw, remove back panel, unscrew another screw, disconnect battery, flash firmware. Ownership and control of this device has now passed from <x> to you. It is now a fully functional laptop. $40 blessed dollars.

Interesting. What model did you get?

This is interesting enough to be worth a bump

You bought a computer with a keyboard and a screen for $40? Where?

Such low quality replies are not worthy of Lain. What kind of interview do I need to do to access the real Lain?

It already hapened with phones, where the most ROM-friendly devices are google's pixel models. Maybe they want their laptops to be the best linux computers? I'd be worried about some Google Management Engine thing going on, but I guess we can't prove it either way. I think the only really needed test would be wiresharking the router to look at the bauds and see if the thing phones home at all.

>>19503 Yeah, I generally agree. So is somebody with the skills doing this and where is their report? Where is this being discussed that isn't reddit or a forum controlled by project developers? Cheap rugged corebooted laptops and convertibles lainons. What's the catch?

>>19475 >hat do I need to know about coreboot-on-chromebook specific security issues and where do I read it? http://www.loper-os.org/?p=2433 >inb4 fud it's just some rant though I'm still looking for something that has 4-8gb ram and x86. knowing the battery compartment should be nice but I doubt there's available schematics or info on them, really want to diy battery once its worn out. sadly batteries do not have a standard even with small lapbooks or netbooks

>>19512 Thanks for posting that link, it's exactly what I was looking for. It would be interesting to see if there has been any further developments in cleaning the cr50 chip since 2018. >though I'm still looking for something that has 4-8gb ram and x86. You're looking for a rec for a laptop? Totally agree how ridiculous it is that there aren't battery standards.
