What follows is a notice that I've fallen too far behind in managing /sec/, and thus the quality has dipped too far below what I deem acceptable. To correct this, I'll be using a very harsh option, and will in a week or so begin removing entire threads I deem low quality. I expect I may end up deleting pages of threads, as many of the threads here have always been below what I'd expect. Share your thoughts and complaints below.

>>17952 i'm fine with it, there's a lot of low-effort stuff on this subject and skiddies who can't rtfm/into google-fu. my only concern is that a lot of lower-level discussions can get borderline schitzo, so i'd appreciate it if speculation threads got a little leeway.
Case · 2021-11-11 21:50
>>17952 Not based. You can't declare quality posts and have content appear. I agree many of the threads seem to focus on the same thing - Tor is cyberhumped/Secure, Mobile Phone Security/Privacy. Deleting all content that doesn't meet standards will simply mean a blank board.

desperate times call for desperate measures to remove /g/ spammer soykaf brewers
Jens Hansen · 2021-11-12 01:47
I agree that /sec/ is a bit surface level and it's been pretty noticeable over the last year. I also think you'll eternally have the same problem with the board the Alchemists did. Everyone who has a security focused mindset is going to keep those things they know secure and especially so when talking to people in a similar mindset. There needs to be at least some surface level soykaf in order to "break the ice" so to speak.

First I apologize for the english mistakes. I heard about lainchan (and sushichan) over a year ago, while browsing a "/g/'s links" thread, needless to say I've found those much more enjoyable than the permanent consoomer hell and general trolling/idiocy concentrate that is /g/. Now about that purge, I'm talking about the technical knowledge requirements of things. I'm doing cybersec studies so I can read most threads without looking wikipedia up every two posts, but I take new people interested in the field or simply into cyberpunk things and curious about its culture will have a hard time understanding discussions (or take part in) if the enforced technical quality is too high. Howerver I reckon that creating a thread and asking to be spoonfed ("tell me how to XXX" and the likes) content is not desirable. Why not make some permanent "ask away sticky thread" to cater to this. Essentially this >>17961. Apart from this I feel like there is too much thread about privacy with the usual rambling, I'd like to see more about actual security things, (and practical things, little experiments). I'm not asking for maths or bit by bit dissections of protocols, but just something a bit more about what is, why it is and how, instead of "do you think balblabla". Not sure if I'm very clear and maybe I haven't lurked enough to get the culture right but it's frustrating to enter a thread, expecting to learn something and just get thrown buzzwords and vague explanations (all mixed in schizo soykaf). For instance I find /hum/ always stimulating for some reason, maybe there's something to be learned off of them. All in all it's a pretty good board though. Despite what I said, topics are pretty diverse and most people know their soykaf. I especially like the "educational" topics where learning resources are shared.
Dujour · 2021-11-12 15:30
A lot of threads here could just be made into generals honestly. Many individual threads asking similar but not quite questions about the same topics. It'd be easier to organize. Is there a way to at least merge some posts into a new thread? >>17962 Same soykaf different day
Koichiro · 2021-11-13 00:33
Why just sec though Lainon's posting quality has been a bit anorectal recently.
Wintermute · 2021-11-13 06:29
>>17952 First of all, thanks for the heads up so I know to save threads which are important to me. Second of all, be careful deleting soykaf. This place is already dead as fuarrrk. Don't get carried away deleting soykaf like power-crazed R*ddit mods. Laincahn is one of the highest quality places to post about hacking on the dark net that I know. Yes, lainchan has had an influx of /g/ tourists recently. Things like Piracy and IMSEI spoofing are being discussed on /sec/. It seems fine to me. >>17953 This. Deleting threads will do the opposite of making quality threads.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-11-13 07:40
>>17952 Hello, moderator. First of all, thank you for giving community feedback, and for allowing us the opportunity to connect with you. I would like to respectfully share my thoughts as a refu/g/ee who discovered lainchan in the last year. Sorry for the essay, but if you wanted feedback then here it is. >Who am I? I'm an high-skiddie-tier hacker.I left /g/ because of all the pedophile loliposters. As someone interested in cybersecurity, /g/ was also extremely unsatisfying to my hunger for knowledge. Talking about cybersec on /g/ often gets you called a glowie, seldom gets a relevant response, and is just overall bad. Eventually, even the cyber/sec/ threads on /g/ became soykaf and that's when I read that we migrated here. >The content quality of /sec/ As a newbie here, I was actually pleasantly surprised at the high level of hackerman-tier content compared to /g/ and R*ddit. Being allowed to post here with TOR must be a big factor, because actual offensive security gets discussed here. Anyway, I understand it is your viewpoint that the quality has gone down recently. >>Piracy Hacking and piracy kind of go hand in hand. Ripping videos from webpages designed to protect them is hacking. You can find viruses by pirating too, so we should probably have a thread on the security-related side of piracy. I think we've all had to resort to pirating some non-FOSS software at some point. Then again, I would also understand if you don't want piracy discussions here. If you take the piracy threads down, I won't be sad. There's not much in them anyway. They went better in my head. >>TOR People need to be aware. I know this has been asked and answered, and the DNM Bible exists, but we should have a TOR/Privacy resource general. We should always have a TOR thread up. >>Mobile There is a lot of good information in multiple mobile threads. I participated and took notes on those discussions. They have helped me significantly. I will be VERY upset if you nuke any of the mobile threads that have actual technical discussion in them. With that said, there are a bunch of mobile threads up, most of them are just retard-tier questions like "muh flip phone". I request that you leave up the threads on IMEI/IMSI spoofing and mobile hacking/wardriving up. It would be better if all these discussions were consolidated. >>Just Google it Bro Unironically Google Dorking general is wholesome >>Low-level schizo threads Anytime we're talking about any privacy or safety, the schizos show up. People get triggered by ignorant schizo comments, but if anything we should be helping everyone including the schizos themselves by dispelling schizo myths. However, there are a bunch of threads right now which are almost pohl tier with how bad they are. If you're going to delete anything, start with those.
SHODAN · 2021-11-13 11:00
Hey mod I know it's your board so you'll do as you want, but I went ahead and created a visual representation of my general idea of what's good and what's bad about the board. I've read almost all these threads. I check them daily for updates. I'm a pretty active lurker. >Green Dot Green Dot threads are the best quality ones. The discussion topic is technical by nature. The best replies are attracted to the green dot threads. Those threads have the most amount of valuable information in them, and deleting even a few of these threads will probably greatly upset people. I know it will upset me, and I'm one of the most active posters on this board ever since I decided to leave /g/ and not come back. >Yellow Dot Yellow Dot represents threads which have the potential to have quality discussion, but the topics are also very niche focused. Also, yellow discussions have a higher probability to go off-topic and attract schizos. >Red Dot These are schizos, political posters, awfully phrased questions, and schizo-tier redundancy. There are redundant and awful phone privacy questions which have been asked and answered in other threads. I strongly suggest you start with the red ones.

>>17963 This is a good post. Some types of threads need to be decreased in volume and/or turned into a handful of generals, and some questions that recur too often could be routed into a newbie questions thread. Aspects of /g/'s hellscape also need to be prevented from infecting the site- I swear I saw a soyjak on this site one time. It was soykaff.
Elliot Alderson · 2021-11-15 07:05
>>17985 >Aspects of /g/'s hellscape also need to be prevented from infecting the site This. I've been seeing a lot more /g/ tier posting. It's not just affecting /sec/, the quality of lainchan's content as a whole is going downhill
Armitage · 2021-11-15 10:14
Unpopular opinion: quality never existed on lainchan in the first place and 99% of lainbots are just redditors who only have installgentoo tier knowledge.
Liet Kynes · 2021-11-15 15:49
>>17952 If it's possible to merge similar topic threads, please do so. Also, clean their copies splattered around /tech/. The problem lies more in presentation of the board itself, what a person sees when visiting, first page with last 10 threads on it. If there was a default catalog view, or OP posts list, that would have been better in exposure. Although default catalog view doesn't seem to help nanochan, but that's another story. This board suffers from very vague unelaborate topics, like OP copied a click bait article off buzzfeed and brought it here. Whether it's done out of malice, trolling or genuine naivety of the poster is out of my comprehension. And if possible, please add a language enhancer for spelling TOR capitalized. I know, it's a clean way to filer out retards with a script on my side, but if you ignore and never teach them anything, they'll never learn. Also please consider proposing to group tech boards into their own overboard like /cult/, mega is filled with threads from hum and drg.

Jim Hilger · 2021-11-20 12:56
The bar got really low across the board recently(pun intended). I would suggest a quarantine for new threads, like have them not delete old threads until they have a good number of posts or so. Seriously one liner threads are a no go and have 0 effort in them most of the time, if atleast the images had some value. The ones on 4chan were atleast remotely funny, a lot of one liner threads should just go to /dev/null straight away..

>>18096 I used to frequent these generals quite often when they were thriving and on fullchan with the /cyber/ board before it died. Both of these places were alive during a similar time period. I want to say the death of fullchan and /g/ declining into advertising and mods being soykaf killed both of those communities. The "purge" they claimed to have happened around 2021 was much earlier, but at that point the threads were basically on life support due to the infighting as noted in that articke (the push for more job posting and the culture posters dying as a result of being unwelcoming). As for bans, one can get derezzed off of /g/ just by simply making fun of mods or posting an opinion/topic they don't like, which happens often. I've gotten derezzed for discussing site hosting for example. Though it's strange because if they did dislike cybsec as a topic they would ban every general instead of just regulars. Maybe they soykafposted too hard in other threads but it would be hard to prove. The regulars probably just have better or other soykaf to do besides keeping a general alive in a hostile environment, sadly. I wouldn't consider this specific general dying the reason for Lains /sec/ to be declining. This sites constantly promoted all over the web from Twitter to Reddit. It's no surprise you'll get an influx of newbies asking stupid things because of that.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2021-11-24 20:10
>>18096 the sec threads on 4chan die because 90% of the threads are people asking what certs they should get, and its too slow to last on a fast board like /g/. a lot of generals suffer this fate especially on boards where 100 brewing soykaf threads are posted every hour
