Is there anything I can do with a Thinkpad T430 to save it from the Intel Management Engine? I know it's not one of the cool machines compatible with Libreboot, but is there anything at all I can do to fight it?

Coreboot and me_cleaner. The T430 requires complete disassembly to get at the proper chips. This is an OK guide. My T430 runs Coreboot.

Coreboot exists, plus me_cleaner.

You'll also want to look at 1vyrain.

These are all the options I know. Haven't had to use any particular methods so I can't say anything myself but Tripcode recently released a video on 1vyrain and skulls.

Can you fgts please give a rundown on LibreBoot and CoreBoot for the uninitiated?
Trinity · 2021-11-22 07:30
flashing coreboot is enough to disable the management engine
Pris · 2021-11-22 08:54
A lot of guides seem unnecessarily complicated. All you need is to leave first RAM slot empty and IME cant run because it only has access to the first slot.

Sure.
You know how with Windows, you'd have a fully proprietary OS and proprietary drivers to talk to hardware?
Well, then with a typical Gnu+Linux OS, like Ubuntu, you'd have a mostly free software OS but with proprietary drivers to talk to hardware.
But! There's some hardware out there that there are free software drivers for, or the hardware has been reverse engineered. So you have have a fully free OS like Trisquel plus free software drivers. So your whole OS is fully free.
But the OS is not the only software running on your PC, there's also the BIOS. And the BIOS can be fully proprietary or partially free with proprietary drivers or fully free.
So your default BIOS on your motherboard is fully proprietary.
Coreboot is a mostly free software BIOS with binary blobs to talk to proprietary hardware.
Libreboot is a fully free software BIOS without any blobs.
So in the modern day the mostly absolutely free system you could have is a computer with Libreboot as it's BIOS and Trisquel or something like it for the OS.

There is no evidence that intel ME is an backdoor.

Just look what Intel themselves say.
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000008927/software/chipset-software.html
>Geatures include (but are not limited to)
Either it's saying there are secret unspecified features or perhaps this just means more futures planned for later
>Low-power, out-of-band (OOB) management services
This gives access to the computer remotely by an IT to troubleshoot and instal updates remotely etc or for use by a server administrator I guess. It could be exploited.
>Capability Licensing Service (CLS)
Had no luck finding what this does. Anyone?
>Anti-Theft Protection
At least in the case of Lenovo T400 series laptops this uses an anti theft program from Absolute Home & Office which is full of vulnerabilities. It has to be enabled by user but many cases occur where the seller enabled it.

>Protected Audio Video Path (PAVP)
I think this is for hardware acceleration of the GPU for videoplayback.

Your digits say you're joking, which you must be. Unless you're dumb. How much evidence do you need? Do you need an actual glowie to show up and pwn your IME? I'll fuarrrking do it just kidding but srsly research it on Jewtube.
>why do l33t glowies take off IME from the Southbridge?

I see. This website is so educational. Thank you, anon.

Yeah, but then you're only able to use half as much RAM.
