Getting rid of iPhone
Spooky · 2021-08-08 12:22
Hello fellow lains, let me tell you my story
>several years ago get iphone because they have reasonable security, and company commitment to privacy-even governments decided to use iPhones over the years due to their strict privacy and security ratings
>Refusal to turn over data/unlock phones and generally well vetted system to prevent hacks/viruses
>Be the last few weeks
>Apple is now essentially ending end-to-end encryption on its services by scanning everything on your phone for cp
>Justification is "think of the children"
>machine learning is going to be used to analyze ALL content
>People have already confirmed simple work-arounds to prevent NEW content from being analyzed. This essentially negates all arguments that apple has saying their technology works.
Where this concerns me is that if machine learning is going to be used, that since I kept financial information on my phone by taking pictures of my hand kept records and the way I was using it was reasonably safer than keeping it on a home computer, now all of my financial data is at risk. Obviously my apple profile is all fake, but now it can be associated with my financial records. I also have a lot of family photos which I realized have all been catalogued using machine learning from apple it would be easy for apple to run facial recognition and since it auto-generated a folder called "selfies" it essentially figured out who I was. I also thought I had cloud storage turned off, but I realized somehow cloud storage was backing up all of my pictures once I started seeing large data usage by the photo application (that I remembered turning off specifically). I am now concerned that with the treasure trove of data being collected by apple that all of my data is now at risk with apple possibly being targeted for large scale data heists. I deleted my pictures, but I can't be sure that apple really deleted pictures.
I want to get rid of this, but I don't know if there is an easy way to remove my data from the system now, especially if they are backing up image hashes to cross reference against known cp (which I obviously don't have) but as people on the apple forums point out, if they have implemented the ability to scan for and identify potential cp, whats stopping them from scanning for anything seen as undesirable as facebook and google currently do (like political views). This problem extends beyond just the photos you take, as they are possibly going to start implementing the same technology in all MMS sent to or from a device.

it's completely irrelevant, that the only ones explicitly targeted currently are rightoids. what we've seen is that these tech companies are essentially infrastructure, and that they can effectively exclude people from (digital) everyday life. (or monitor them)

I think there was a discussion on something similar a while back. Basically it boils down to this:
Start disseminating false information and filling your iPhone with trash data, which should disconnect you from your phone. After a while of feeding the crapple with worthless info, get rid of it, and go for a dumbphone. If you can't, get a smartphone that does the bare necessities, and don't tie anything to it. Trusting a big company device with your data was a mistake in the first place, but you can still potentially save it.

If their hashing everything it will be inevitable that a hash collision will happen and as a result false positives will happen, because they're just so many files.
>whats stopping them from scanning for anything seen as undesirable as facebook and google currently do (like political views).
These companies have no interest in actually stopping it. It's model is entire based on conflict having people with both extreme views. If these views go away so does their eye balls and ad viewing. The only reason Facebook and twitter even started small "crack downs" was after several terrorist attacks and even then you can still see alot of nazi's posting under different more "patriotic" names.
>I want to get rid of this, but I don't know if there is an easy way to remove my data from the system now, especially if they are backing up image hashes to cross reference against known cp
There isn't almost all data is backed up for at minimum 5-10 years arguably forever. most pages keep these accounts up encase users change their mind and want their account back.
>using machine learning from apple it would be easy for apple to run facial recognition and since it auto-generated a folder called "selfies" it essentially figured out who I was
That's not usually how companies identify you. These companies usually use geolocate which is much easier to identity people than pics or finance records. It's easy to identify you this way even if the data is anonymized.
Apple will do whatever is profitable, back 10 years ago keeping people's idea of privacy and telling the government they won't help was profit driven. Now the inverse is true and hashing files and sending them back to government now is more profitable. What worries me is the way hashes work. The companies and governments will be able to identify almost everything on your phone this way. Not just cp which is probably not what their looking for.

get one with removable battery, SD and a custom ROM you can build yourself. (implying: rooting is then also possible.)
other than that 6GB of RAM is not a luxury, and neither is 64Gb of internal storage depending on how neat you keep your phone. IP rating is a bonus, and camera quality is subjective.

Get rid of the phone. Period.
Nothing good about it, get a emergency dumbphone just in case.
Actually even the Steam Deck is a better alternative and way more powerful than any phone or laptop in the same price range.
Not to mention any android or apple phone will die by 2038 since they use file system that can't support "big (unix) time".

Took you long to take notice.
It even knows your all devices around your house because it can sniff every little device the same proximity as you through proximity beacons OR in the same wifi network. Even android phone would actually visit the gateway address of the wifi router that it's connected to last I logged it.
Not even "spoofing" will fool the starbucks wifi, since there will be a moment that your device will broadcast its mac if powered (like during boot) before you're able to fake it through kernel or software, and tracking soykafs also at an all-time high now that beacon apps are heavily required for corona, even that guy near you has a phone that will try to scan for your devices' bt/mac addses and be able to track you.

Just remembered I made this thread, Tried substituting a nokia, but did not go well. Looks like google bloatware is just as bad. Honestly I wish I didn't need a phone to do simple things like pay my bills and get calls for work. Turns out you cant even use some carrier data services without handing over device address to the carrier to remote enable usage for the SIM.
I really wish I knew more about how mobile network authentication works, but seems pretty blackboxed. And nokia is kill with everything autosuggesting I download a new facebook, google, or tiktok app every 5 minutes.
And there is no market for non-smart phones... Guess Ill just use this phone until it breaks since I don't have another few hundred moneys lying around.
>>17516
I did this, though New software updates are dubious. and despite features being disabled, they routinely re-enable automatically (i will wake up and my phone has autoconnected to a local "free" wifi network that i have confirmed is a honeypot or at least a no longer supported network that is still broadcasting and able to connect to since I live in an apartment building).
Being in Uni, I had to also download whatsapp and Discord because classmates are retarded and refuse to just meet in person or call me to work on group projects (we dont want covid they say as they go to parties every other day).
I tried buying a dumbphone, but seems like most of them run facebook apps baked into the phone and real dumbphones only work on phased out network configurations in my area (4G-5G only).
Dropping out and moving to the third the world is a realistic option for me to stop being stuck in this technological hellscape.
>>17028
Once I back up my phone and pulverize it with a hammer this is happening in a few weeks. Once covid restrictions lift I already have a few jobs lined up, and University is pretty awful with all the W0ke idiots and stupid normal people. I haven't gotten anything from school that I haven't been able to teach myself anyway and being in class with a bunch of zoo-mers who cant even figure out how to act their age is unbelievably frustrating.

>neurosuggesting
I was merely upset that cloud services are ON by default and all my pepes are forever associated with me. Even if I destroy the phone, there will always be a record of me having a bunch of peypey memes which society sees as evil despite the fact that its literally just sadfrog. Call me paranoid, but i've seen people get in trouble for less. I even had to do an anti-hate class for work where they pointed out signs of "right wing racists" and pointed out peypey by name, a few people were visibly nervous. I'm quitting my job soon too because I can't stand the new management who wants to turn the company into a sayfe space.

Best way now is to just buy throwaway 4g dongles or 5g if you really want some effective way to dislodge the unfair tracking (until governments either slap the wrists of these creepy companies which is happening at the moment but slowly).
Huawei pocket wifi somehow has at least some level of customizability and there exists huawei flash tools that let you modify the imei if you're really hardcore (although I only use the tool to disable 2g since those are insecure when using the net or receiving sms and casual "downgrade attack" happens and the cellular data gets low encryption while also the sms can be easily intercepted which is why 4g/3g is good however this does not stop them from encapsulating your stuff with a fake 3g/4g network which happens when the speed is slower than usual as said by some hacker before "latency is a great measure", downgraded attacks even work with bluetooth which I think is what happened with EV cars the same way downgraded wifi can remove all the necessary protections of wifi6 / 802.11w letting attackers inject stuff in your network).
The more you use that phone with similar imei the more you glow and obviously these apps on the smartphones and nu-dumbphones had API to access your phone number which I've noticed back in android ice cream sandwich.
The best case is to just buy a portable huawei dongle wifi which can "receive calls" and do some SMS (I think it can only make calls though) and just remove the battery of that dongle when you're done, that's as "dumb" as a cellular phone can get. There's even apps that interface with the pocket dongle/wifi which you can probably just ghidra yourself and you're left with just the proprietary baseband but I think there's already some few projects that at least get some level of "freedom" compared to all these pinephone memes which just has a hardware killswitch which means literally nothing.
Linda Lee · 2021-10-03 06:53
>>17521
I'm glad, that not everyone is falling for the pinephone meme. It's just a marketing move to appeal to the ever growing safety crowd that doesn't want Safety, just a feeling of safety.
Do you think, one could externalize the WiFi antenna of a smartphone, and add a Killswitch to disable it whenever not needed? Maybe even add another for the network antenna, so your phone doesn't work as a tracking device for the gubmint.
Yuki Nagato · 2021-10-04 11:50
>Do you think, one could externalize the WiFi antenna of a smartphone, and add a Killswitch to disable it whenever not needed?
You can probably do that, find the schematics and check if wifi chip can be powered off safely.
>Maybe even add another for the network antenna, so your phone doesn't work as a tracking device for the gubmint.
There's literally tracking being done with the covid tracker beacon even if your wifi/bt just "popped-in/out" the other devices nearby you will catch it and proceed to upload your devices id+location on some database.
I think I'm not the only one here who knew of this but every smart phone with a covid app or up-to-date system can act as a bridge for these covid apps will be collecting all MAC bluetooth ID and wifi ID of surrounding devices and even the location (I assume based from the gps data on the cloud because most people forget to turn off gps on their phones and some apps request it and turn it on its own).
Now I think it's not really a good thing and still the colds still spread regardless of these "exposure notification" and cool apps which unironically was originally the "Privacy-Preserving Contact Tracing Project" all farce when there's few cases where the police had used such data to track someone, even the fact that third party apps can just query your gateway router's mac address and provide that data which can be referenced to the tracing database, it's literally like DNA (watch the latest veritasium video). Funny how at the end of the video you could see that the girl claimed was a little bit "paranoid" and used duckduckgo but jokes on you, you have hotword which may have been spying on you """"""legally"""""" >>> https://lainchan.org/%CE%A9/res/51377.html#51529

I've been wondering that too. Are they only scanning icloud or is there something in the system itself that scans then phones home if it gets a suspected match (which easily could be false positives) ?

Check GrapheneOS, it's pretty secure, completely opensource and doesn't have any of that tracking stuff. You can also really turn off the wifi or cell module

My thoughts are that anything doing an AI scan is too intensive on the phone's resources which would be undesired by any manufacturer because consumer complaints on speed issues and same issue if it's uploading photos somewhere to be scanned plus data fees involved which easily would go noticed. So they most likely are only using a hash system same as Microsoft has for years. Only question is if this hash system is inside the operating system itself then phones out or if hashes are sent to a remote server to be checked against a database and also whether it involves files on the phone itself or from an icloud account instead. If I recall right hash systems can cause false positives like AI can cause false positives.

Not sure where the other thread on this topic went that was better written. Instead of just groaning about Apple people really need to get on the issue and press Apple more to stop moving the hash checks forward or else they will face the consequences of loss of sales, returned products and lawsuits. If they are not stopped this will be picked up by other companies and soon required by law to be on all phones and computers. Apple has a feedback page on their site and a forum. Both should be flooded as much as possible with arguments against the existence of such tech and make financial threats. Ideally avoid vulgarity so it can appear more impersonal and can be shared by a wider audience. Apple did listen and put it on hold but seem to be planning in moving forward still just trying to improve the system's accuracy in some attempt to get around arguments of how it will give false results. They already have heard the argument of how it can be exploited to track people's political beliefs and other affiliations so they can be hunted down for dissent which couldnt hurt to drive this point in more. A few points to call them out on they have not addressed include how if someone trips enough matches someone physically looks at your files. This not only violates privacy but can be potentially exploited where an attacker either uploads images with matching hashes or changes the hashes on your files and tries to gain access to your files once the system is triggered. Another point to make is human error. A file may have a false match but appear to be illegal due to how anyone close to of age there is no distinction whatsoever between legal and illegal in appearance. Any other ideas?
