can a zip bomb destroy storage? thinking about creating one and naming it "pizza" as a form of personal security. they open the file, my data gets nuked.

Generally, no.
It can maybe mess with the OS running the session if it doesn't deal well with crashes, but that's the worse it'll do without being fancier than just a zip bomb.

This is unrealistic. Worse case scenario is OOM which shouldn't do anything to the storage. But if you're talking about opening the file on your own system, you could do something with the relevant binaries where if a particular archive is opened then bad things happen.

who do you mean by "they", OP?
>feds acquire hard drive
>copy files to server
>glowie downloads the files he wants to investigate to his vm
>burns vm
>files still exist on server

They open the file in what software? Are you sure this particular software will execute the fork bomb? Are you sure it won't be done in allocated RAM region on a virtual machine?
Copy of your data gets nuked, and there's still plenty of forensic backups to repeat the investigation, you know this, right?
Don't be an idiot, use FDE and destroy the key.
