Deleting your physical and digital papertrail advice
Schizoid · 2021-04-11 05:31
Tl;dr I've become schizo about my past and current digital presence and I want advice how to delete it with no trails
Hello Lains, forgive me if this is not an appropriate thread.
I'm sure as you know this past year has been the worst for humanity. I'm not going to go over all the soykaf soykaf but one thing I have realized is that the Internet has increased its presence a million times over.
Over this past year I've become very disdainful of the internet (Specifically social media culture) and something has been really fuarrrking with me. I've always been skeptical of the internet and being the recluse I am I have amassed a digital presence during my tenure. Anyways, over this past year I've become a V-Tuber fan (Hololive in specific[This has relevance to my woes]) and I've always wondered what these idols looked like in real life.
Long story short, I've went on obscure image boards and found all of their information. What really bothered me was how literally everything was available: Addresses, Images of them, Family Members, Phone Numbers, Emails, etc. All of this personal and what should be private information was public for the entire world, and what really fuarrrked me up was the lengths that these obsessive people went to find this information. Literally cross-referencing things they have said on livestream to figure out their identities. I started to realize just how much information about personal lives and soykaf is put on the internet. I remember in school that the Internet should never mix with Reality, and seeing that really fuarrrked me up. Knowing that anyone's information could be put out there like that made realize that I should really delete my digital presence and try to keep a low profile physical presence.
My problem is that I am an artist (Not going to say which field), and with physical events coming back relatively soon and with an online presence being necessary to gain any sort of following, I've been put at an impasse.
I need genuine advice on how to delete my past presence (which as of writing this is now somewhat deleted, but I still need advice) and prevent my information being put out into the wild. Anything at all such as deleting emails and how to get rid of personal information on the internet.
I realize that I must be schizo-ing real hard rn but I think a lot about how if I were to die, my online presence would be the only thing to remember me by. I really feel dissonance from knowing that my digital presence will be forever, and I want to limit that before its too late.

and not even to just limit my presence, but also how to not cross-reference my presence. As I've said it's impossible not to use the Internet nowadays so advice on how to not cross-reference different personas would be appreciated.

>but also how to not cross-reference my presence
In the context of the kind of cross referencing you mentioned earlier, when using a pseudonymous identity, avoid social chitchat, avoid talking about your life or experiences, avoid using voice chat. Avoid talking in detail about your real opinions.

Bump. These books are good.

First Book: Just don't use it lul.
Second book: Garbage.
Third Book: Interesting.

Why is the second book useless?
I agree that the third book is pretty good.
I mean, the tl;dr of all of these is basically "Do osint. Now find out how to remove what you found with osint."
Is there any mechanism to request removal of cached google content?
I have an old username I'm trying to be rid of that's on a few sites that are cached.

Why did you not post pdfs?

OP (a person in mid 20-s I presume) realized that younger generation, especially females, especially those who do livestreams for a living for most part of their lives and only recently started playing as "anonymous" anime-themed avatars due to fashion don't treat privacy and personal information in same way his IT class textbooks and Stallmanites from chans taught him to.
Yes, their private info in on the net, so what? Nobody's interested or invested enough in murdering or kidnapping them, and if someone does, the autonomous feedback loops of our immediately wired world would probably build evidence on the poor idiot who decides to with a few on-spot video feeds from any angle, high-resolution photographs, CCTV feeds and facial recognition systems along the way to reinstate the equilibrium in a matter of 18 hours.
How to be anonymous artist:
Step one: do art
Step two: never tell anyone you did it, it should just be there and contain 0 evidence to backtrace it to your person
Step three: a mysterious nameless artist gains popularity due to unique properties of his art to attract spectators - The New York Times
Step four: mysterious artist's artwork was sold, then vandalized, the resold for tenfold price, and finally stolen at Sothesby's auction today, stay tuned for more updates
Regarding deleting info from "the net":
Basically, there exists a duality:
>Data put on the net stays there forever
Is true for most stuff that reaches big corporate severs or is relatively interesting to some group of people which puts their resources to acquire, preserve and disseminate it (the power web archivesand aforementioned mentioned doxers/stalkers function on)
>Data put on the net is transient and non persistent, 70% of webpages from 4 years ago do not exist anymore, a study says, yadda-yadda, and other crap like that
Is true for minor service machine-generated info nobody is interested about and maybe some small man-made contributions that are unfortunately deemed as not worth preserving. Seeing OP as a wannabe artist, he's faced with this duality: to be attentionwhore and be imprinted in mainframe forever it a Tron-like nightmare of stuck in a loop playing modern equivalent of lightcycles, or rather to flow like tears in the rain and disappear in avalanche of time leaving only fond memories in people's hearts without evident personality connected to them, not ones and zeroes on machine hard drives.

Addition: the "dox" data might as well be a part of ARG that surrounds these e-idol personalities, a a part of their PR campaign, do you really have means of assuring all these "leaked" addresses and emails are true, are "personal photos" not altered or crafted on purpose and released meticulously? This is a game that keeps their audience "engaged", talking in the most remote corners on the Internet and participating in spectacle.
It has been long time proven that any "public person" with most drama and nudity attracts even larger audience, these two domains being most intimate, yet their exposure generates the most publicity. It's called black PR, Streisand effect, etcetera.
Besides, I remember seeing pics of one of those Hololive streamers. Well, just an ordinary girl, cute even. They are never ugly, even under computer-generated masks, aren't they? Never ugly, ugly women have other things to do than livestream, so it seems.

I appreciate your input, but you've got a lot wrong about the reasonings behind my post.
First off, you're right about the modern day generation not caring about internet privacy. I myself am a victim of this as well. My problem is that I want to live my live, and hopefully my artistic endeavors, as lowkey as possible. I'm not interested in people finding out where I live or possibly having "haters" trying to find everything about my life. Obviously with the proliferation of the net and how it's consumed humanity at this point, my goal isn't to fully get rid of everything about my digital presence, rather, to selectively delete a bunch of information while only keeping the information I want out there. In essence, self censorship.
I realize that not everything can be fully deleted. As much I and a bunch of other Lains would like that reality, it isn't possible anymore with how streamlined and carbon copied the internet is nowadays. My legacy is something I think about constantly. I want to disavow anything I've ever done due to youthful ignorance and I want to start anew, especially since my artistry as already started with a small following. Not to mention, when the net starts to have historians and explorers in some odd years. I fear that people will eventually find me and start tracing everything about me. I do want to live my tears in rain life, but only with my personal life. I have no issue with leaving behind a legacy for people to find and explore, so long as it has to do with my artistry and not who I am. Separate the art from the artist so to speak, not too far off from Tommy Wiseau. Even I never make it big, I still don't want my information to be there for net archaeologists to pick at when I'm dead.

I'll definitely look at these soon. Thanks Lain.

You're basically making an excuse for these girls who don't think about the bigger picture by calling it an ARG. I mean, some of the VSHOUJO V-Tubers actually have good security in place to prevent doxing and to keep their lives separate. I think there's one VSHOUJO girl who actually uses a speech to text to speech program so she can keep her voice anonymous even. People need to be more careful nowadays and nobody is thinking of the bigger picture.

You can't delete yourself from the world, unless you become an hero (not recommended). If you're going to make art in the world, why wouldn't you want it to be online (which is also part of the world)?

>If you're going to make art in the world, why wouldn't you want it to be online (which is also part of the world)?
same reason why I wouldn't want my art to be in a book titled "biggest soykafs of the 21st century", if it were part of the world.

It isn't about not putting my art into the world, quite the opposite really. It's about not wanting myself (Or rather who I was) and my info out there. I just want to make art without people prying into my life. My art isn't my life, but my life is my art.
