lainchan / sec
I'm considering starting a convention.
Anonymous · 2020-10-22 17:45
I have been thinking, I want to host an SEL themed sec/prog convention. I would call it WiredCon, but IIRC that name has already been used somewhere. We all know that this isn't going to happen overnight, or even over a few months. It'll probably take over a year, considering the speed of this board. Not to mention the minimal amount of people here who would dedicate their time and resources to building something like this.
It think it would be great for us to have something like this at least once. Something small, revolving around things we discuss here and things you would read about in the Lainzinewhich hasn't been worked on much lately, kinda sad that something great came to an end so early in it's infancy., but not gargantuan like defcon. Imagine lainons like you and I, having a place to meet psuedonymously, where we can share ideas in meat space, and just in general have a great time. I know alot of you are kinda against the wall about meeting up with randos from an imageboard IRL, but I also know there are quite a few of you who would be down for something like this.
Are you willing to put effort into making something like this happen? reply "yay" or "nay".
On a side note, we can discuss what activities we would like to have at a convention like this.

>psuedonymously
>meat space
Explain how that would work
it should also be called a meating space
Lain · 2020-10-25 14:03
Yay
Y.T · 2020-10-25 16:20

Who said that you had to tell people your name? Also, who said you couldn't cover your face? soods only brah.

It could be a gpg signing party with speakers talking about /sec/ or /prog/ related things. Sounds pretty cool when you think about it.
Tequila · 2020-10-26 15:08
yay! Sounds like a fun idea for sure.
Jet Black · 2020-10-26 15:29
sounds like an okay idea, OP. imo it could be like a tech convention where the panels are discussing the current state of the internet, technological literacy, programming/computing, and such. could also be good to open it a bit further past just lainons for just a broader scope on tech as a whole. an absolute yay from me as long as you dont fuarrk it up
Elliot Alderson · 2020-10-26 20:14
Its a cool idea, but i dont see it taking off, not the way things are, maybe some of the lainon irl meetups might grow something eventually.
Akxn · 2020-10-26 23:14
>>12790
yay. But i think this thread is in the wrong section. Maybe /r/ would be better :)
Agent Jones · 2020-10-27 15:25
I know alot of cons are going online due to covid, you might just need to get a private stream on a server for /sec/ talks and some guests. Some group activity idea's wouldn't be bad as well.
Y.T · 2020-10-27 17:42

OP here. I certainly don't plan on doing anything physical this year. We could de an online event this year if we can get enough people to do talks. That and I would certainly love if we could get a ctf set up.
Rick Deckard · 2020-10-27 17:44
>>12852
We should get a channel for discussing this in the lainchan irc.
Erik Johansson · 2020-10-28 05:31

I'm down for the CTF, I'm not experienced enough to give a talk but I could whip up a couple challenges.
Cypher · 2020-10-28 18:39
>>12860
I'd like this
Arisu Mizuki · 2020-10-28 23:18
>>12871
The problem here is getting organized
Dr. X · 2020-10-29 03:21
Yay but I think it should be done online first
Also >>12860 sounds great
Roger Pollack · 2020-10-29 15:52
there is literally an online lain convention going on right now with the authors

Was gonna post this, there is no reason to have an annual meetup right now. A virtual one is being completed as we speak
Mitnick · 2020-10-30 05:20
>>12887
I think OP meant a more /sec/ /Ω/ /diy/ related convention. Though this one is pretty lit I must say
Agent Smith · 2020-10-30 14:04
>>12887
OP here. Didn't know about this. sounds cool. Wasn't exactly had in mind, as >>12900 said. But I'll give it a look.
Lady Jessica · 2020-10-30 20:43
I suggest starting out by forming a meetup group at BlackHat/DEFCON. You can grow your network / culture in that setting. After a while, maybe after doing meetups outside of cons as well, you'll figure out what you want that BH/DC doesn't have, you can start your own thing. That's kinda how I'd do it anyway.
Hacker · 2020-11-02 05:16
I think it could stand out from other conferences by being more that mere /Ω/Δ/, with /drg/zzz/hum/, too, and when it's big enough, maybe even a dedicated /r/ hall with open stages for whoever wants to present---simultaneously, and literally anyone can just get up on stage even while someone else is presenting on that same stage.

Lmao as if I had the money to attend those cons. I live in the bootheel ffs.
Debbie Charteris · 2020-11-02 17:04

I am from europe and don't think I'd have the resources to apply for a visa, fly to america and rent a hotel for a one or two day "con". I'd defenitely go if I could but since it would probably take place in murica: nay.
>>12906
How many people on here actually visit cons with that kind of ticket pricing? I'd guess not very many.
Mentat · 2020-11-06 18:18
Are we still discussing this?
Mitnick · 2020-11-07 03:49
if there was a physcial con would people even go? Lainchan isn't a very big site.
Yu-ichi · 2020-11-08 23:33
>>12960
Call it IRLchan. Come to reenact memes, trolling and soykafposts IRL with hundreds of anons. Have separate rooms for tech, anime, politics, b, with an open mic in each.
Agent Richard Gill · 2020-11-10 18:06
I dont think this is a bad idea, but if people arnt willing to invest time in lainzine, will a convention be more popular? It will require costly physical travel.

That sounds like a nightmare haha
