Cryptocurrency for newbies.

Could anyone recommend some great privacy-centric guides on purchase/managing cryptocurrency? (specifically XMR)
There's so many sources online and it seems a tiny bit overwhelming for someone who has no idea where to start.
Ender · 2020-10-16 15:36
Generally.. where are you located? The exchange you use might depend on this.
Alternatively you can find many people to buy monero from directly with localmonero.co. It works and the people that trade there are great. Just use known users for trades only.
Also, for managing cryptonote you should look into feather wallet. Its in early development but it comes with better features than the OG xmr wallet.
Lady Jessica · 2020-10-16 16:19
typical procedure is to buy with cash from localmonero, send it to a new clearnet account, and then send it to a new account that only connects via tor.
Importance of doing at least two transfers to *new accounts* (not necessarily new wallet, monero wallets can deal with multiple accounts) cannot be stressed enough. You have to assume that both the place you bought monero from and the person you are transferring to are being watched by the cops. With just one step between it is significantly easier for someone who is watching both ends to de-anonymize you. Each extra step makes it significantly harder for them.

How do you figure out where the new opportunities in crypto are? I'm an old user with BTC (mined on GPU, sold on MtGox), but it doesn't seem like crypto (particularly Bitcoins) is going anywhere at this point.

>then send it to a new account that only connects via tor.
How do you do this? Do you need a wallet on the tor network?
Boris Grishenko · 2020-11-03 02:22
>>12920
You will need to create a new wallet which you will always use with Tor to connect to the network.
This generally means a new daemon instance living in a different config directory because the standard Monero wallet program effectively has a unique random ID assigned/chosen upon first use. Safest would be to use a new VM for the new wallet.

Find someone on localmonero who'll accept bank transfer/PayPal/whatever you're comfortable converting with.
Follow the steps. Simple.
Gyula Kovacs · 2021-03-16 13:53
Not sure if this a good thread for my question, but seems most appropriate of the ones I've seen on sec, tech, prog, diy:
Do any lains know of linux wallet for ERC20/Ethereum network tokens?
All the ones I've seen so far are limited to ios/android or online web browser (ew...).
For BTC/BCH/Doge/Mona/Monero there are clients you can run as cli or gui, with your wallet stored locally. Surely ethereum also has a similar program and is not complete botnet?

Last I checked its up to about 100 gb now
Add flags --prune-blockchain and --sync-pruned-blocks and you'll download a pruned node: about 35 gb
I'm not sure if the first flag is necessary but considering how long it takes I can't be fuarrrked to an initial sync without it

How secure are remote nodes? Obviously depending on the threat model but assuming I want to buy darkmarket stuff, would it be okay to use a remote node
Yu-ichi · 2021-03-17 10:10
>>15171
Remote nodes can correlate the IP that connects to them with a transaction. For darknet markets you should be doing ALL of your wallet->market transactions via tails or whonix which renders this a moot point. Assuming you are using an up to date official wallet and not disabling the safety defaults then it is sufficiently safe. If you're really going hard on darknet markets (i.e. you are a dealer) then it may be worth hosting a pruned fullnode on your tails/whonix.

Care to elaborate?
I am no crypto maximalist, and I have serious concerns about the technology. Mainly bitcoin not being as decentralized and secure as they claim it to be and Monero being small and not well enough tested (mainly because not as many eyes look at it as bitcoin), ethereum looked promising with smart contracts, but seems to have reached the unusable point.
On the other hand, the austrian economics and grass-roots aspect of the technology seem very appealing.
I fail to see the ponzi scheme light and would love to be illuminated.

Couple questions if anyone could help please.
>Purchase Site
What's the best site to use for Americans for quick and easy USD to XMR purchases?
Non-KYC stuff seems to be a bit more tedious, and takes longer, however yes the added anonymity is a benefit. But not really needed in my case here (just to send some money to a friend quickly every now and then).
So what site that uses KYC is best?
If I just wanted to send a friend $20USD worth of XMR quickly, what site can I use to purchase the XMR with my debit card or something. He would also use this site to convert the sent XMR back into USD.
>Average Fee
Also can anyone elaborate on how much (average) we should expect in fees using XMR to USD, and then USD to XMR? If I sent him $20, I assume I'd probably get hit with like a $2 USD fee, then he'd get hit with $2 when transferring XMR to USD. So I'd have to send him like $25USD worth of XMR, if he needs $20USD?
I heard the fees are very low with XMR, in comparison to BTC. I know they fluctuate, but if anyone could help give an estimate or something in to how much it costs per each transfer/conversion.
>Isolation
Also I assume I should use a separate wallet and address when purchasing from the KYC site (because that KYC site is linked to my XMR address),
and another seperate wallet and address for the non-KYC purchases (for anonymity).
Correct?

In america I don't know where to buy monero, I'm european and bought on binance, others good exchange are ftx, gemini, kraken... But you can use whatever exchange has litecoin, buy it and then swap with monero using cake wallet or some other exchange without kyc like tradeogre or sideshift.
Watch https://kycnot.me/ for more.
>Fees
The fees of monero are lower like 1cent or less. But the fees to take out/or in usd will depends on the exchange
>Isolation
Yes. You should take out the monero from the exchange on your wallet and then send.

>What's the best site to use for Americans for quick
I am not in the US, but have been using localmonero.co, which should work with dollars.
It is not an exchange, you buy from random people, either via bank transfer, send cash, or meet in person. It has a significant mark-up over market price, but there is no KYC, and it just feels more organic, you get to talk to the seller, there are reviews...

They're the same as they always were, buttcoin was a thing for the longest time. Envy is a natural human emotion. Same with ignorance. I do think that it's not used much in real life and it's way to speculated on but popularity catches on much faster than it can develop. Or people care to develop IG.

I've always been curious if there's a place for odd jobs such as video editing, photo editing, etc to earn payment in BTC, XMR, or any other cryptocurrencies. Does anyone ITT happen to know of such ways to go about this?
Anamika · 2021-10-10 05:04

Crypto only has value if other people will buy it from you. So you can only make money off of crypto if you can continue to find bigger idiots than yourself to buy at a higher price than you bought at. Even if you are using it purely as a currency rather than an investment, you are depending on others not buying at a lower price than you did (or not refusing to buy at all). This is only partially true for fiat currency such as USD, because the currency is backed by a government mandate which essentially requires people to take your money.
Honestly though, the main reason I am not bullish about crypto is because the current financial system is way to sweet a deal for the US Gov. There is no way they will ever let crypto continue if it becomes a threat to their hegemony. They could easily ban it by saying it's used by terrorists and evil hackers. I like the idea of crypto but it's not gonna happen in my lifetime.

and make trillions in wealth disappear like that? what effect do you think that will have on the world economy?
XERXES · 2021-10-10 05:33
>>17602
It wouldn't be worth trillions anymore though would it? But they likely wouldn't outright ban it, they would just implement taxes/fees/regulations to the point that it is more expensive to use crypto than USD.
Technician · 2021-10-10 06:37
>>17601
It's already too big to ban; a large percentage of the US population has some, and there are multi-billion-dollar public companies in US like Coinbase. It would be a political soykafstorm to ban it and there is no precedence for such laws.
>>17603
It's already always been like that. Bitcoiners don't care about actually using it as currency. Monero users would be unaffected by a ban because bitcoin can be used as the on and off ramp with atomic swaps (e.g. unstoppableswap.net) and illegal markets thrive regardless

>but the government wouldn't just destroy the economy!!!
You don't get it. It doesn't matter what effect it would have on the economy. The existing government and financial establishment cares about nothing but protecting its own power. If crypto ever becomes a real threat to the hegemony, it will destroy it by any means necessary. If it screws over the people who bought into the Ponzi scheme, they don't give a crap. The only thing crypto will ever be good for is illicit transactions.
Cutter · 2021-10-10 13:24
>>17607
Its not about whether it would destroy the economy, its whether there is enough political will. It would be completely unprecedented to ban alternative currencies and there's not really any public support for it. Banks already own a lot of crypto, they see it as an investment rather than a threat to their power.
William Holtzer · 2021-10-10 13:48

China appearently has already outlawed crypto currency as of recently.
Also fun fact, by chinese law you are required to own a smartphone.
Needless to say you are right, but its more likely they will try to control it.
Also i thought of getting into the game this winter, any beginner tips?
Switch · 2021-10-11 07:03

You're not seeing the big picture and looking ahead. They are taking a more sneaky approach. The complete traceability of most cryptocurrencies is a beautiful opportunity for the governments to expand mass surveillance and ban cash.
BTC is ruled by majority. If it goes mainstream, the government can and will turn it into whatever they want. With 51% of mining power, easily achieved by coercing mining farms, they will be able to censor transactions and even inflate the chain beyond 21 million coins. Nobody will care that some libertarian nerds say "it's not the real bitcoin" if it is the mainstream-accepted BTC.

For any lurkers milling about, here you go. As long as you can freely transact and directly control your keys for transparent blockchains, you will always be able to swap your coins for Monero :)
The real hurdle now is the ability to purchase secondary wealth using cryptocurrencies- food would be a great place to start. Imagine purchasing all your groceries with XMR.
