windows leak

Nobody special · 2020-09-24 15:55
looks like a windows xp and 2003 leak https://www.limetorrents.info/Microsoft-leaked-source-code-archive%202020-09-24-torrent-15247398.html https://mega.nz/file/PdhxBSZD#w-O3C-BAMwE4E02qPn_fSdTivILcE8hzk9PeyoXg7wU we may get fully functional foss windows, i could easily see russians or whoever updating it for security and improving it.
Haruyoshi · 2020-09-24 17:28
>>12451 Full source code or only components? >we may get fully functional foss windows Unlikely, realistically every leak makes it harder for a project like ReactOS since MS can start to claim they've looked at and copied the leaked code. >i could easily see russians or whoever updating it for security and improving it. Maybe, but perhaps MS is a big enough and important enough even for Russian infrastructure that such a project wouldn't even be safe there
Jean Dupont · 2020-09-24 17:56
>>12452 >Unlikely, realistically every leak makes it harder for a project like ReactOS since MS can start to claim they've looked at and copied the leaked code. I wouldn't be shocked if MS intentionally leaked old code for this exact purpose, especially nowadays with Win10's bullshit generating a slight interest in other operating systems.
Pris · 2020-09-24 18:23
>>12452 >wouldnt be safe in russia ivan has been distributing everything from windows and office to aaa games and blockbusters for years and the most the us has done is name russia as a bad country that harbors digital pirates. it also only requires security patches and maybe some library updates, both of which can be at least partially sourced from wine and reactos so i cant imagine there would be a big dev team for gates to crush. theres also potential for easy portable versions of windows programs.
Unknown · 2020-09-24 18:55
>>12455 There's a difference between piracy and actively developing stolen code, piracy can be random but teams developing hax0rd versions of XP will most likely be co-ordinated or coming from a single source.
Roy Batty · 2020-09-24 18:55
This must either be brand new or fake, there's no articles about it yet.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2020-09-24 19:00
>>12457 I'd say fake, the leaking of Windows source code comes from third-parties either corporations modifying Windows for their needs (almost certainly Windows Embedded) or an agency auditing the code for security risks. In either case it's unlikely that any one source would have received the entire codebase for Windows to perform their task for the very purpose of not having it all leaked.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2020-09-24 19:14
>>12457 >>12458 at least 2 people on /g/ have compiled it and said it seems like a slightly less polished version of winxp but with a bunch of tools and programs that werent on normal winxp. microsoft has been known to give source code to governments and large companies on occasion so its likely a specialized version for pencil pushers.
Roy Batty · 2020-09-24 19:17
the threads are here https://boards.4channel.org/g/thread/77879263 https://boards.4channel.org/g/thread/77874231 cant be bothered to do the captcha for the archive but you can if you dont want ads.
The Phantom Phreak · 2020-09-24 20:57
I hope one of these days a leak for W10 comes out and see how spyware is in it, and if someone makes version that removed all of it.
Spike Spiegel · 2020-09-25 10:19
>>12461 That’s already been done without source code, there was a hacked version of W10 called AME that removed most if not all of the spyware built into Windows.
Bobby Newmark · 2020-09-25 10:33
Doesn't M$ terms prevent using them in any other project than ones M$ has given permission?
Crazy Jake · 2020-09-25 11:21
>>12468 Yeah, no one can actually legally use this code.
Hacker · 2020-09-25 15:09
>>12451 >we may get fully functional foss windows No, that's illegal and violates copyright. You can't legally use leaked code. If you want foss windows, help developing ReactOS in the process of cleanroom reverse engineering or just donate.
Hagbard Celine · 2020-09-25 16:05
>>12471 On that note, man, imagine if ReactOS got some serious funding - enough to go beyond XP and develop Windows 7 compatibility. It's a shame it's moving along at the speed of dirt.
Incognito · 2020-09-25 18:04
Wonder if this will turn up anything regarding NSAKEY.
Cat Mother · 2020-09-25 19:38
>>12472 It has been nearly TWO DECADES to get to the state it's in (i.e. barely functional). It's pretty much a dead project at this point.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2020-09-25 22:28
>>12472 They recently hired a dev for the money from donations. >>12476 >It has been nearly TWO DECADES to get to the state it's in (i.e. barely functional). So what? Windows is still becoming worse in terms of bloat and surveillance. It is so bad their photo gallery app loads in up to 5 seconds on an SSD with modern processor. As long as Windows is used, developing ReactOS is still meaningful, even after two decades. >It's pretty much a dead project at this point. Not really, it gained some speed recently and have some GSoC contributors yearly. I think their biggest problem now is adding "HACKS" to their code really often, but maybe I'm just too unfamiliar with developing things as big as a Windows clone.
John Titor · 2020-09-26 10:19
>>12477 >I think their biggest problem now is adding "HACKS" to their code really often, but maybe I'm just too unfamiliar with developing things as big as a Windows clone. In fairness, if someone is aiming for 100% Win32 compatibility, ugly hacks are going to be the order of the day because Win32 was basically sedimentary hack layer upon sedimentary hack layer.
The Plague · 2020-09-26 10:46
>>12479 Not necessarily, people looking through the code has said the XP codebase is surprisingly clean and well structured, not the absolute bowl of spaghetti code people were expecting. Turns out MS has professional coders and project managers instead of a bunch of hackers, go figure.
Faye Valentine · 2020-09-26 10:57
>>12453 Honestly that's my thoughts exactly on this. 2020 definitely has turned a lot of attention towards people wanting a different OS and escaping the problems of Windows 10 and people not wanting to upgrade from Windows 7.
Hitomi · 2020-09-26 14:51
>>12452 >Unlikely, realistically every leak makes it harder for a project like ReactOS since MS can start to claim they've looked at and copied the leaked code. Their comment about the leak: https://reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20189 >Sure... a bunch of 4chan idiots steal MS code and we happily use the loot as we want. Sounds like the best idea ever! >This code is the pure evil incarnated for WineHQ and our project. It causes even more possible developer candidates to be of zero use as you are tainted by our definition if you looked at leaked or not MS code or worked for MS.

Here is the SHA256 checksum of the win xp source 7z archive from the original mega link that was posted here, for anyone who wants it: 2bb3609fa4c2b2641f43aef751a84db5820b64748b7d2d0891d1cb1e55268ce9 I also have the magnet link and mega links as well but wont post them here due to DMCA.

>>12451 What we need is for someone to use the NT kernel source to build a completely new operating system. It's what windows users have dreamed of getting their hands on for years and now we finally have it. If you know how the NT kernel works then it really opens alot of doors. As far as legality goes.. who cares. dev teams can create iso's and upload them with the source via torrents etc.
Unknown · 2020-09-26 19:48
Why is there a bunch of 9/11 and vaccine truther soykaf about Bill Gates? And other random soykaf? Who is the retard that bundled all this stuff?
Roy Batty · 2020-09-26 19:51
>>12487 That's probably the repack torrent. Some retard got ahold of the original and then put a bunch of other stupid soykaf in it and fuarrrked with the cab files. The original is this one: 2bb3609fa4c2b2641f43aef751a84db5820b64748b7d2d0891d1cb1e55268ce9
Unspecified · 2020-09-26 19:54
>>12486 Again this is a common misconception >Create a new OS Easier said than done, This codebase is nearly 20 years old the amount of work required to bring it up to date would be immense for an open source project. >As far as legality goes.. who cares. Again, easier to tell someone else to not care about the legality of this, but lets face it you're not willing to risk the rest of your life to making XP hacks. >dev teams can create iso's and upload them with the source via torrents etc. They'd get caught long before any new builds are worth distributing.
Koichiro · 2020-09-26 19:57
>>12489 fool.
Yet Another Lainon · 2020-09-26 20:01
>>12490 Sorry to shatter your dreams, but this leak does more harm than good for a FOSS NT implementation. If you're both a prodigal systems developer and also above the law, then by all means prove it.
Guthrie · 2020-09-26 21:17
>>12491 This isn't the first time MS source code has leaked. 15 years ago it was a chunk of win2k source. The prevailing wisdom then was that if you were a system programmer, especially a free software contributor, you should stay far away from it because it would open the door for an SCO style attack.
Haruyoshi · 2020-09-27 13:43
>>12455 >>12456 even with piracy, the russian gov has tried many times to shut down it completely but generally have failed thus far because of popular opposition rutracker has been on the verge of a ban for a very long time now
Hagbard Celine · 2020-09-27 14:24
>>12491 To be fair, there has been a project called OpenNT which was basically a juiced up version of the old NT4 leak and it was a thing up until 2015 or sth. The project died, but not because of Microsoft or their legal action, but simply because of lack of manpower to achieve their goals.
Ein · 2020-09-27 18:06
>>12503 >The project died, but not because of Microsoft or their legal action, but simply because of lack of manpower to achieve their goals. IMO real developers were just scared. No one sane will risk their career, freedom and/or family to maintain some stolen abandonware with no future.
