Can anyone give me tips and tricks how to circumvent Zoom's privacy flaws

Yeoja Aideul · 2020-08-18 17:19
I really don't like giving my information to the commoners because People tend to do stupid things. I've gone overboard with this and it makes me look like I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia ; I've bought Burner Devices, Throwaway SMS, Throwaway E-mails,Throwaway Accounts, Virtual Machines,VPS, Covering my whole face and Body, Removing Cameras from Devices, Speech synthesizers, Voice changers, Changed the background, Changed my Behavioural and Cognitive Patterns. Any bright Ideas

>>11998 The number one way to circumvent Zoom's privacy flaws is by not using it. That is... If I am correct in my assumption of what you mean by "privacy flaws". A quick reminder that those "privacy flaws" are not flaws, but inherent in the design of the software. If you are required to use it for work, school, or something else - All you can do is mitigation. Of course, I have never used Zoom - nor will I ever - so I cannot say which mitigations would be best to use. If a phone number is required, a burner is a great choice. If an email is required, a burner email is a great choice. Instead of covering your face/body, how about you simply do not use your webcam. Instead spoof your webcam to be a gif or image, if you can given your circumstances. Using a voice modifier is great, but you have to understand that whoever you may be speaking to may be bothered by this. At the end of the day, avoid sharing things you do not want a malicious state actor or a company to know about.

The best advice is to just not use it, but that's not what you want to hear. I've seen people get criticized for preaching how botnet software is going to become inescapable sooner or later, sadly its come to this. At my university, there is a dedicated unit of people evaluating the security and privacy aspects of certain solutions, and while Jitsi and alternatives seem to have been at least considered, ultimately they decided on buying a fat Zoom license. Funnily the non-technical universities did a better job of it and set up their own Jitsi and BBB, in contrast to our supposedly technical one. A real pathetic state of affairs. Sage because none of this is helping.

>>12000 >Funnily the non-technical universities did a better job of it and set up their own Jitsi and BBB, in contrast to our supposedly technical one. My university has actually been pretty good about using free software, not because they're ideologically motivated but because they're a state school with a relatively tight budget. Unfortunately they've been gradually adding more and more licensed proprietary crap, but at least the open source stuff is still typically available for legacy reasons. Also, for whatever reason they have several different ways to do teleconferencing... webex, google hangouts or (whatever it's called now), bigbluebutton, some kind of trunked office phone system, and now they just got a zoom license. I don't get it, but at least I don't have to use zoom if I don't want to.

>I've gone overboard with this and it makes me look like I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia I think one day these normal people will just accept what it's like if their country starts doing what China is doing. >street AI cameras Mind you their smartphones which used globally have literal AI camera connected directly to CPU which improves recognition every year >facial recognition >dissent in a chat and get sent to the camps the next day >DPI somehow futile so they just blocked tls versions and esni and probably why CF dns is still broken >actual Chinese devs on github need to use a lot of net hacks just to access the real internet and some of them be offline for long time until they circumvent the wall with uber 1337 methods. In China, what you were doing was just a fraction of their struggle.redacted

>>11998 Self hosting Jitsi is basically perfect. It's literally as easy as zoom i.e. one click, one link.

>>12043 China's surveillance culture is getting exported in like five years, max. Already in process in most developed countries. And no, nobody will raise a finger. The species has been perfectly domesticated in record time by this fuсking internet psyop we're all wrapped up in nearly 24/7 these days. Just don't use Zoom. Even if you could shield yourself from it perfectly, you're contributing to its normalization. I have to use it at work, but luckily I can quarantine it on my work machine. I haven't seen anybody turn on their fuсking video feed in months. Isn't this just the telephone?! You know, the one we invented more than a century ago. And the one that still works more reliably anyway. Did we trade away all our data and dignity just for these inferior rip-offs of Edwardian technology? None of it makes any fuсking sense at all. I don't see why people are acting like Zoom is an innovation of any kind. Nobody likes video calling. They've been trying to implement it since the 70s and it just creeps people out.

>>12044 What are jitsi's resource requirements like? I already have prosody running on a vps so I've been thinking about figuring out how to integrate jitsi as well.

>>12047 Funny how both browsers had to downgrade their tls so that zoom would work flawlessly. I bet it's that old isp tls bug again or zoom just don't want to upgrade security 'for reasons'. One day most of the web might just run under AMP or similar and no one will have a say. Some phones actually are locked to amp only and even to this day there is still no way to turn it off unless if you probably install firefox which is dead. >>12047 Add 5g to that, you know, two bigcorps developing them (H and N). All I can see 5g being useful is that it can now commercialize equipped military drones for 'governments' or in other words a drone camera low latency enough for combating citizens! Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA! It'll just literally dodge if you try to maim it, and blow your in the head in the perfect moment. Actually the smartphone/drone technology originated in miltech, like how Jobs saw one and tried to recreate the smart phone. >5 years My two cents, it's two point five years.

When I had to use zoom last time (our professors don't require usage of microphone or webcam for students) I ran vanilla chromium inside Debian virtual machine with VPN to hide my IP-address. I am not sure if it works trough web browser at this day but best case scenario is just straight up refuse using zoom.

>>12051 To join meetings with your browser you now need to get an account, if you run the program you dont need to signup... Not sure whats worse. Hope this is useful info.
