I don't know if this is the right place to ask. But is it possible to get into cybersecurity while escaping the "curse of tech" ? By that I mean, get into cybersecurity, but having it be strictly work and not engage in it for "fun" like the rest of tech, oh yeah and preferably being able to stick to using old, tried and tested technologies instead of having to hop on a new bandwagon every year.
I like technology, but I don't want to deal with the progressive leftist bs, I don't want to be anywhere near an LGBT person and I don't want my boss to be a woman. I understand that's not just sector dependent but also and mostly country dependent, but nevertheless, is there any career in cybersecurity that fits that description ? I don't mind reading up on and having extensive knowledge of protocols and formats for example, I don't know where that knowledge is applied though.
Yet Another Lainon · 2020-07-06 14:03
Not possible at 2020.
Dujour · 2020-07-06 15:50
As a hobby you may do whatever you like, yes, but cybersecurity as a career in is a hot topic for politics because of money and popularity. You can't join any field now without political play-toys being involved. Cybersecurity got popular because of the "hacker in the basement" aesthetic. Perhaps you could look into something more obscure(won't get you a job)

I like politics too, it's just my political beliefs are too conservative for me to consider them as anything but a mental illness and a sign of the West's downfall.
I've realized I ask for two different things in the OP, a tech job where things don't change much and a tech job where the people themselves are conservative and have that old engineer mindset. Basically aiming for either the ''civil engineer'' or the ''detective agency'' aesthetic, any one is fine.

Just work on a bank or a similar soulless business. From my experience you won't run into those problems there.

In my experience, people like you are typically very subpar hackers. Real hackers don't pay any mind to people's sexual preferences or whether their boss is a woman because they're too busy hacking.
It sounds like a more subjective field like journalism may be more to your liking.

so it seems you dont even know how to do your job, but you have requirements toward coworkers sexuality and gender, wtf

Missing the issue. Real hackers want to pay no attention but people like that wont let them be. Why do you even know if someone is lgbt or whatever else at work? Its cause they waste time advertising it to you and worst case drag you into dumb soykaf like diversity meetings where you are to learn about how great this all is. And if they sit in hr they wont hire on skill but on allies/enemies which means the company drops in quality.

This banks identified it very early as liability.

"you must visit a bad website" yeah accuse bad character when you have no argument and just fyi i dont visit plebbit. On topic Wall Street news have been talking about it already 2018. Why would you even assume your personal job is relevant for whats happening in the market? A single data point is nothing. And you clearly never bothered to check statistics how much things went sour. I dont remember anything on lgbt but i saw data regarding the impact of me2 canceling via twitter. Study 2018 28% in management avoided women to avoid risking getting their career canceled, 2019 it was already 60%. Nobody gives a soykaf beyond maximizing profit so any potential risks are dropped. Note this is us. Its obviously not uniform among all countries but if you think nothing is happening you're way out of the loop.

If you're not an asshole or bigot, LGBT and wamens will leave you alone. I have worked with some of the biggest trannies you will ever meet (and there are many in infosec) but guess what, no one has ever tried to "cancel" me because I'm good at my job and I'm not a prick.
Your thread is like kicking dead whales down the beach. git gud and stop blaming your problems on other people. Your cherry-picked statistics do not reflect reality.

cybersecurity is a constantly evolving field because the nature of technological threats is always evolving. Keep up or get out, no other options.
There's a lot of work in building RTOS software for embedded systems, generally the evolution time of that is slow because they need to work in place for decades. However it's a completely different skill set than cybersecurity.
>I like technology, but I don't want to deal with the progressive leftist bs, I don't want to be anywhere near an LGBT person and I don't want my boss to be a woman.
suck it up and keep your nose out of other peoples' business. What does it matter to you what your coworkers' sexualities are or what your boss's gender is? You're just being picky and entitled, and by your own admission you are not the best of the best and don't have the skills to back up that entitlement.

why there so many trannies in cybsec in comparison with for example machine learning? Btw can i use my extensive knowledge of timeseries analysis and deep learning in cybsec
sage · 2020-07-06 21:34
>>11422
By its nature, infosec is results-focused. The community is super accepting of people from all walks of life as long as you can hack. So you end up with a lot of people from non-traditional backgrounds that have non-traditional hobbies. There's also a lot of furries amongst elite hackers for that same reason.
If you can't deal with that sort of weirdness... infosec probably isn't for you.

probably. sounds like blue team soykaf. monitoring/response stuff maybe has a use for that.

This may be true and all, but using computers also warps your brain and the deeper you go the more warped it gets. To be good at infosec you have to go pretty deep.

Jens Hansen · 2020-07-07 02:08
Upon second thought, the fact infosec people all speak english and that they tend to spend a significat amount of time on the internet means there'll probably be trannies and SJWs even in countries where that sort of thing is extremely niche. I guess the internet is heaven for the LGBT.

I am in the same position. I try to be flexible but in year 2020 I can't. Might stick to my current non-tech profession but keep cybersecurity as a hobby at this point. Also someone posted on Reddit about this recently.

Depends. An investment bank a friend works at is pushing LGBT, blackness, and women in the work place in our emails increasingly as of late. That is in a conservative state as well.
