home security systems

Pris · 2020-05-22 14:39
hey lainons, what home security systems / cameras do you use?
Cutter · 2020-05-22 15:05
I have a lock on the door. I can see the door from one of my windows so I always know who's standing there when I have to go and open it. This kinda eliminates the need for a camera. When it comes to an alarm system, I don't have one. And I don't think that I need one either, because the door is squeaky as fuarrrk. So squeaky in fact that it could probably wake me up. Also, I have a dog (it's gentle, though). Now answer me this; why do you want to know?
Lord Nikon · 2020-05-22 15:15
>>11018 because my packages have gotten stolen and when I need to go somewhere I can't hear my door squeaking and worry about the posessions I can't practically take with me. Also, I applaud your healthy skepticism.

>>11017 I used to use an old school CCTV system at my old house, but now I just have actual guards (human)... Also do not get pic related. You really need a tiered system. But to be honest, a series of webcams constantly recording can be accessed from a cheap computer via remote access, so there are many ways to turn $100 worth of webcams and an old computer into a pretty decent security system with open source camera management software.
Wintermute · 2020-05-23 15:15
>>11030 Yeah that botnet crap looks like a "we have a warrant demanding that you turn over the camera logs" waiting to happen. At least with a homebrew system you can bullshit them and claim it doesn't work the way they want it to.
Bobby Newmark · 2020-05-23 15:53
>>11031 you could also put in a kill switch or dead mans switch

The following is from the sticky: >Do not start a thread designed to collect information concerning the lives, preferences, or other potentially sensitive information of users on this board. A thread for suggestions would've been phrased better, although arguably equivalent. This thread will be allowed for now, but keep this in mind.

>>11038 What's your plan when someone cuts your power and/or internet then carries off your NAS or PC? I am facing a similar problem.
Joe Bloggs · 2020-05-27 17:58
>>11052 The basics, really. Use FDE, and if you're feeling leet/larp-y make a local net based heartbeat that will do XYZ if it fails to connect after ABC time (obvious nuances apply to make sure you don't nuke your stuff if the power/internet goes out momentarily).
Tank · 2020-05-27 18:44
>>11054 A UPS for router/modem could easily last hours. And set up some kind of fallback to neighboring wifi if possible.
Neo · 2020-05-27 19:02
>>11052 FDE will stop regular burglars from getting any data but if you're trying to protect the devices themselves you'd probably want a ups for the cameras and a well hidden control box so the thief doesn't just take the disks or destroy it. burglars won't usually steal stuff that's a pain in the ass to grab so i feel like locking your NAS to a pipe would probably dissuade someone from stealing it. can't imagine there's a big market for stolen home networking gear. on the other hand i could imagine a thief putting in a little extra effort for a gaming pc. anyone seriously after the data on your computers won't cut the power because FDE exists and the kinds of people who worry about LE raids know about it.

I am using some old ass business grade DVR, eventually it will break and I will have to buy a modern system. The advantage of DVR is that it cannot be compromised by a remote intruder as easily as many WIFI attached systems. I would not recommend using a setup I am using because it lacks several important traits that are used in modern security systems, unless your threat model is very specific.

ZoneMinder and a bunch of old cameras that were decommissioned from my job that I got on the cheap.
