SailfishOS and anything but Android on Android devices

hyperlethal · 2017-06-05 09:28
>>https://sailfishos.org/ For security and tinkering reasons I imagine some people would be interested in putting alternative operating systems on their Android devices. In case you aren't familiar the current offerings are: -SailfishOS -Ubuntuphone (now lives on as UBports) -KDE plasma mobile -Taizen (really insecure) Project Halium aims to make things easier for these projects and for future projects, all though it's just ideas at the moment. To look at compatible devices and devices being developed for check out https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris and https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris/porters I have a few devices on the list that I am tinkering with.. What I want to know is how interested people are in this kind of thing?

I have no idea where to start or what those posted wiki lists even mean. My device is listed there and I have no idea what that means or how to even entertain idea of installing something else then Android.

Anyone have experience with Magic Device Tool?

>>961 I'm really interested

>Tizen This is what happens when Samsung is in charge of software development. TouchWiz should've taught us not to trust them. SailfishOS looks like the most promising option, but it only works on 3 devices and its site is not helpful in finding out more about it at all.

>>985 If your phone is on the first list with all the green ticks for the functions you need you can get SailfishOS on your device. There is more than just 3 devices. https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris

Anyone have experience with Magic Device Tool? It is supposed to be a tool to handle this sort of replacement.
BloodCat · 2017-06-07 06:55
Seems like a reliable OS to use, talks about how developers and OEMs have access to the developers kit and make it you're own type of thing. I'll keep an eye out for this one.

>>992 Looks really cool but I will have to add my Moto G titan I currently don't have my Nexus 5 with me, but I will have again in 2 weeks.

Tries Sailfish on my Moto G. It's cool, but it feels kinda limited. The web browser is not very good, and the Android compatibility layer is only available for official devices. Oh, and Sailfish is not 100 % open source. The GUI is proprietary.

>>961 SailfishOS seemed like the best alternative. Sony had a chance to popularize it but they failed. I even think they charged you to switch from Android to Sailfish on Xperia X? KDE Plasma Mobile seems like the second best choice tbh. Looks like they're still working on it. Everything else is abandoned. The biggest issue is the fact that nobody is investing into this. Everyone is just using android or an android-based system (TouchWiz, MIUI, LineageOS). Nobody ships non-android phones anymore. It's not because android is "better" or even cheaper, it's because of marketing. Google being an ad company can sell a pile of soykaf and everyone would buy it. I'd honestly get into the KDE ecosystem if they shipped an official KDE Plasma phone that isn't garbage like the original Jolla phones. I'd get that and the KDE slimbook. >>1010 The GUI being proprietary isn't a big deal as long as the vital system components and software are open source. You can always make a libre GUI.
