How do you feel about Tor developers silencing freedom of speech?(Use more than a single sentence to begin a thread; you should've elaborated and provided links, along with using more neutral material to begin the thread with.)
Technician · 2017-08-17 23:26
I think it's a tad bit hypocritical to say the least
Pris · 2017-08-17 23:43

Roy Batty · 2017-08-17 23:44
Tell me where are they silencing freedom of speech?
Cat Mother · 2017-08-17 23:47
>Tor project doesn't like Nazis which literally means Tor supports censorship even though Tor helps subvert systems of censorship worldwide
John Doe · 2017-08-17 23:56
>>1870 >>1871 >>1872 HEY They never voiced their disgust with anything other than white nationalists using Tor THEY ARE ALLOWED TO CHANGE OBVIOUSLY They are just using this as PR
Cowboy · 2017-08-18 00:05
>>1873 >They are just using this as PR So what? I'm not really in favor of virtue signaling but I think they're free to express themselves as they like. You guys are acting like hyper-sensitive snowflakes.(Elaborate on your opinions rather than simply spilling soykaf; argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.)
Cat Mother · 2017-08-18 00:16
>>1874 >You guys are acting like hyper-sensitive snowflakes. I think that it is more the general perspective that considering the content that Tor became known for in the mainstream, white supremacy is really a minor topic compared to some of the worse movements that were not removed. There was aslo a debate when Tor became a "tool for social activism" instead of "a tool for online anonymity," because it signaled that there was a shift towards the objective of the project (which could put people in danger, i.e. instead of "i just wasn't to be anonymous" it became "well im not realllllly trying to be a social activist" for Tor users) As project managers, they are free to do as they lease, but their user base will respond on the principle that their ideal may have been compromised by finally taking a side, whether good or bad. So long as they walk the thin line between "liberators" or "oppressors" they stay in favor of many people, albeit reluctantly, but when they take a side, whether in principle or in stated objective, they will incur anger of one if not both sides.

>>1875 ignore him, he is just using that insult to try and meme the idea that the right is just like the left and that OP has no substance behind his outrage
Debbie Charteris · 2017-08-18 01:09
Who cares about Tor? Tor is dead. It's infiltrated by anti-White SJWs and the network is controlled by the US government. They kicked out and slandered Appelbaum who was the only person who really knew what was going on. It's time to switch to i2p.
Pulse · 2017-08-18 01:22
>>1878 can I get a TL:DR on i2p security, only reason I haven't switched. IDK if this belongs in a different thread, but I downloaded I2p a few years back, but never actually used it, what are important tips and configs to be safe and secure?
Just another Random Lainon · 2017-08-18 02:19
they aren't silencing anyone's freedom of speech. the onion site's still up, and afaik there's not really anything the tor devs can do about it. they stated their position (a position i disagree with fwiw) and that's it. being hyperbolic about this doesn't help anyone.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2017-08-18 07:42
>neurosuggesting they havent spoken out against any of the previous statements >we don't approve nazi's using our software >hurr durr you jews hate freedom of speech Ignoring the fact that they only condemn them. They cannot do anything about it because that is the way the software is set up. this is of course the only reason Nazi's approve freedom of speech is to get away with saying a bunch of racist soykaf.(Elaborate on your opinions rather than simply spilling soykaf.)
Nameless · 2017-08-18 10:43
This thread is blatant bait and OP's agenda is clear as day. Fuck you OP, for falsely claiming that TOR project is silencing free speech. They are doing the exact opposite by running the TOR project. All they do here is speak out against Nazism, which apparently is a problem for you. Fuck you OP, for falsely claiming that the Daily Stormer is about "preserving whites". If you told me that some of the Charlottesville protesters had that goal, I'd believe you, but the Daily Stormer is a blatantly racist organisation that wants to deport/exterminate everyone who isn't the "right" race. That's not about preserving whites, that's about finishing what Hitler started. Fuck you OP, for finding some guy involved with TOR and putting that star of David next to him. That's the exact kind of selection bias and confirmation bias active in the propaganda that was used around the 1930s to make everything seem like a Jewish conspiracy. That alone makes it impossible to believe you're arguing in good faith here. Fuck you OP, for dressing up your blatantly political agenda and bringing this to /sec/, pretending it has anything to do with security. Fuck you OP, for bringing this kind of nonsense to Lainchan, when a lot of people fled here from 4chan after you collectively ruined that.(Elaborate on your opinions rather than simply spilling soykaf; argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.)

>>1885 >Daily Stormer is a blatantly racist organisation that wants to deport/exterminate everyone who isn't the "right" race Citation needed. I think you're just parroting what you heard about Daily Stormer and never actually read it from them. >That's not about preserving whites, that's about finishing what Hitler started. >preserving whites == what Hitler started umm no? >for finding some guy involved with TOR and putting that star of David next to him What is wrong with pointing out Jews in high positions? They are like 2% of population yet Hollywood is mostly filled with them, news media is filled to brim with them, every major geopolitical involvement of US in middle east is "consulted" with Israel and jews.... It seems to me that a lot of decisions is directed by them, so pointing them out isn't as bad of thing. >That's the exact kind of selection bias and confirmation bias active in the propaganda that was used around the 1930s to make everything seem like a Jewish conspiracy Not everything, just situations where Jews from all around different industries and walks of life come together to profit and go against one goal. Just like US funding Israels defense budget or US being highly controlled by AIPAC. Just seems a bit fishy to me and I think it should be pointed out, then people can see for themselves if the theory holds water. >That alone makes it impossible to believe you're arguing in good faith here That's kid of strawmaning me, don't you think? >for dressing up your blatantly political agenda and bringing this to /sec/, pretending it has anything to do with security Well, it has to do with security on internet. Just because you don't want it to be like that doesn't mean it isn't like that. >for bringing this kind of nonsense to Lainchan, when a lot of people fled here from 4chan after you collectively ruined that "we"? "us"? "them"? "you"? There is no "we" or "you" here. Wth are you talking about? There is only I and you (singular). Your identitarianism and pro-Lainchan raycism has to stop. Other chan users have right to immigrate here and to stay here, infusing their culture and traditions, you racist. >>1888 >equating public twitter message with some back alley FAQ page lol kay

Neo · 2017-08-18 13:39

Splicer · 2017-08-18 13:41
>>1890 It's a direct communication to open public. Much more personal, popular and is able to hit more people than a FAQ page. You can't seriously insinuate that more people go and read FAQ page than they ask soykaf directly on twitter or even call the company up and ask them.

We should try to be more civil about this discussion. The opening post could've been much better, but it's been warned by now, which should help. I find this continuing trend of Free Software projects being co-opted to be interesting; the Tor Project was perhaps the last project I considered would go down this path and agree with not only the US news media, but GoDaddy, Cloudflare, and Google and in such a short time. I get the distinct impression that this is being done on purpose and, perhaps, to push those truly security conscious to a different protocol over time, such as i2p, where it's harder to use the rest of the internet, to my knowledge. While worrying, these trends are also being made extremely obvious, which is certainly bemusing. What do you think about this? How long until the Tor Project is forked, resulting in loss of effort, community, and whatnot? All of this seems like an obvious attack on Free Software and freedom in general.
Jens Hansen · 2017-08-18 15:10
>>1885 >Daily Stormer is a blatantly racist organisation that wants to deport/exterminate everyone who isn't the "right" race Lmao. It's a fuarrrking NEWS SITE that posts some mean and offensive articles.
Just another Random Lainon · 2017-08-18 15:44
>>1893 Interesting conspiracy theory but do you have any proofs other than gut feeling? >How long until the Tor Project is forked, resulting in loss of effort, community, and whatnot? Not in foreseeable future, because there is currently no reason to do it. They are well funded for open-source standards and it is where all the key people of Tor are and a good deal of Tor-related research is done.
SHODAN · 2017-08-18 15:57
>>1895 That's a hit and run away type of post, just ignore it. They come, say "fuarrrk you", insult you and try to peddle their lies as truth, and then they run away. Their posts aren't made for purpose of any real argument or debate or even middle ground, they just want to look like good guys and you like a bad guy.
Sipho Nkosi · 2017-08-18 16:55
>>1896 >Interesting conspiracy theory but do you have any proofs other than gut feeling? There's been an obvious collusion in the media regarding recent events, and these three companies alone coming out to forgo policy and attack this site out of the blue seems rather damning. There was no process in this. GoDaddy started this because of a single complaint; the CEO of Cloudflare admitted that this was done on a whim; and I don't believe Google has given a reason for seizing indefinite control of the domain. This is all jarring if only because it shows what's to come for other websites, without warning.
Anamika · 2017-08-18 19:29
I fuarrrking hate j...
Gyula Kovacs · 2017-08-18 19:50
What does this have to do with security? Some guy who worked on TOR tweeted something. TOR project isn't changing anything. There is no avenue for discussion relating to security here.
Cowboy · 2017-08-18 20:11
Unconcerned. The way Tor works prevents efforts to work without basically taking down the whole network.
John Titor · 2017-08-18 20:41
>>1901 This. Tor devs have been outspoken in the past about people using it for malicious reasons, but it's not like they are going to (or CAN) do anything about it. This entire topic is moot. It's honestly a little surprising to see so many lainians rush to the defense of white nationalists and nazis over something so innocuous. I guess I'm not that surprised, given this is a glorified chan board, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little disappointed that someone can spew vitriol and racist rhetoric so openly and the community hardly bats an eye.
Miho Iwakura · 2017-08-18 21:18
>>1872 It's completely out of tact when you take into account what the project is about. It honestly feels like someone wanted to congratulate themselves but used the communication channel in a more personal manner than they should have.

I consider it a service that this was brought up here, as I may not have otherwise been aware of it for quite some time. Regardless, I also don't see this thread as being productive or quality in the future, as many have made up their minds and are insulting rather than discussing, at this point. Much of what could've been written has been and so this is locked.
