Tales of Maj'Eyal is probably the greatest roguelike I've played in a while.
Besides that Cataclysm DDA was great

There are more games as competitive as osu? I love ranking system in this game!
Anonymous · 2015-08-16 11:18
Roguelikes are most of the time free.
Heres a big list I snatched off /vg/

Also look up rpgmaker games. I'm sure you've played (or at least heard of) IB or Ao Oni

Single player and comparing scores? I doubt that many, but you could always get into speedrunning.
Anonymous · 2015-08-16 13:08
Gang Garrison 2
It's a 2d version of TF2. It's pretty good as long as there is a decent server up.

Path of Exile
Anonymous · 2015-08-16 16:30
http://xonotic.org/ - Fast FPS a la quake style.

Two squids in coitus appear like hands clasped lovingly at the palms. An amboeboid landscape threatens to engulf civlization and all its plastic bottles. Disembodied mouths live in the walls of municipal buildings like household pests.
Gingiva features five playable characters, over 100 fully animated creature portraits, multiple paths and varied endings.

And
Middens is an exploration game using collage and original pixel art in tandem that takes the perspective of a drifter traversing a veritable x-zone. Roving its interminable wastes the nomad chances upon a sentient revolver beside an ominous pile of remains.
The pistol offers its exploit in exchange for a pledge of inextricable compansionship. Espousing to be the player's conscience the dubious weapon directs the drifter to a nearby outpost wherein the story further unfolds.
Despite its appearance as a wasteland the rift is home to many strange denizens---
some volatile and others ineffectual. Whatever their disposition the pistol represents the choice to engage them or to spare them. Aggression and passivity have their appropriate times with rewards and consequences being granted to both paths respectively.

If you want AAA quality graphics and gameplay, look no further than warthunder.
Balancing is an issue as anything other than USSR and USA are infuriating and German tanks are glass cannons firing damp powder.
PS: Rule Brittania

i played it when it was airborne combat only
was ok, very arcade-y and in more realistic modes there were not enough players. what's the situation on that now?

It's open source now too!

Lots of players now and a realistic damage model. I can get a tank realistic battle in 1-2 min usually, there tends to be less realistic/sim air players because of the need for joysticks and such

Thanks for the link, I'll be trying a few.
Do you know of a similar list of general ncurses games? I'm really into those but I don't know many and the ones I know aren't really amazing.
There was this commercial top-down ncurses game with cool FX, like you would shoot a missile and see it go its way, crash into a wall, explode and leave the walls darkened. It was still in development like a year ago but I forgot its name. Sadly it was closed-source.

I finished Cave Story saving Curly and killing Ballos a couple weeks ago and loved it. You can chill around the maps and just listen to the soundtrack if you feel like it.
Does anyone know of a similar one? Open source and runnable on a slow machine would be great. I found that videogames help keep my mind active, like a fun brain exercise aside from college's math.

It does have donation benefits and DLC, however these are mostly minor things. 99% of the game is completely free.
On the other hand however, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is completely free forever.

There's also Iji and Hero: Core(sidescrolling shooters, one with plot, the other with action), which can be found at http://remar.se/daniel/games.php
Then there's minetest.

Aurora is a space 4x game, if you have a lot of time to lose. Some say that it's basically dwarf fortress, but in space.

Liberal Crime Squad is a game made by Toady until 2006, and was then picked up by the community. A sort of rogue-like, squad management game for the Liberal Revolution.

Played it since first public beta release, mostly RBs.Got 3/4 of all planes ingame and 4 Premium. Played in some good clans. In complete, it was worth the time i spend on it.
Now it looks more like they are strongly! focusing on tanks(last time played was like 2 months before). They are rather "playing" with the planes models than fixing it finally.
They dropped (sadly) the old leveling system. They buffed every nation but not the germans(they even nerfed their 20mm to 15mm...). I dont wanna talk about the russian planes flying and fighting with NO wings (not joking). Or the blueprint planes outperforming any nation in any way. Or the UFO brits, usa ... and so on and on and on...
I havent seen any normal high altitude or/and team fights after the tank patches, because the plane patches were reduced and only a joke. Unbalanced as crap and the community somehow got worse.
I got disgusted by this game in the last year and stopped playing it. I am missing the "realistic" feeling in this game how it used to be before the arcardie patches.
In the end, i have no idea whats with gayjin and their plans. Sometimes i got disappointed and right after that a perfect patch came out. So maybe you'll be trying it out again, but dont expect to much from this game.

There's something horribly wrong with the movement, but I've never been able to pin down just what it is. Also the weapons are ass and the sound effects are awful. Map editing is fun though.
