Unsigned · 2018-10-18 11:15
Hello guys. I need your help. My first year in college is began boring me. I am mathematics undergrad student and I feel bored. Lessons are hard for me and I don't know how to work my lessons. I need resources, working videos and something else. I give you list of my lessons. I am waiting for your advices. General Mathematics - Something like Beginning calculus, we use Adam's Calculus book. You can give advices for calculus and pre calculus. Analytical Geometry Abstract Mathematics Physics 1 - 1 lesson for physics, we only see mechanics releated thing I am depressed and my brain is crashing.

>>9883 >My first year in college is began boring me. >Lessons are hard for me Maybe you had wrong expectations what is mathematics all about? If you thought it would be like in the movie "PI" or "Beautiful Mind" then it's not. You make exercises and read proofs in textbooks, a lot! If you don't find that fun then it won't get any better. If your into it but have a hard time understanding the lectures then I would advice you to try and contribute by making exercises on the blackboard durring lessons(if you have something like that). You will be guided by the professor in doing that and maybe he will explain to you the parts you don't understend. I won't recomend you any books because of two things. Firstly the names of books I know are good I know only by the name used in my country (not a english name of the book), secondly I don't know what kind of level your interestd in (there are books ment to be read by mathematicians and there are books ment to be read by engineers). Just ask your professor about the literature to the subject if he didn't given it yet.

>>9884 I wasn't expecting Pi or Beautiful Mind. I just feel sick and bored. I am away from my family. I don't have friends. I started smoking. I had chance for joining army. That was compulsory military service. I say fuarrrk my mind, I wish I join army and die in a duty. Thanks for your advices.

>>9885 Hey I get it, I had a same problem when I was young. I enrolled on a mathematical studies in a city 150km away from my home town and droped out after 6 months (didn't know any one, struggle with understanding the lectures, also alittle depressed). Next year i tried mathematics on a different university (I was certain that I want to study mathematics) and after 5 year I got my master degree. It was a lot of hard work but I think I ended in the top 20% of the studnets in my year. Hope that helps in some way.

What country are you in? That doesn't sound like any freshman mathematics sequence I've ever heard of. (I got a math undergrad in the united states.) What is abstract mathematics? Math undergrad classes get more interesting but also more difficult (unsurprisingly). Do you know when you take the "intro to proofs"-type class? Most schools have something like that, although they call it different things. Mine called it "intro to mathematical reasoning". Its designed to teach you how to think and work like a mathematician. If I were you I'd suspend judgement until you take either that or at least discrete math or abstract algebra. Lucky for you switching majors from math is relatively easy, provided you do it within the first couple years and transfer into something like computer science or engineering. I only say this to point out that you have a ripcord if you need it.

>>9887 https://cty.jhu.edu/online/courses/mathematics/abstract_math.html I live in Turkey. >>9886 Thanks for your advices. I have one thing to do. Working hard. Lainons I am waiting for your advices. It is important for me.

Last thing I need Maple 2015 or 2018 Linux free-cracked version.

what is "abstract mathematics"? All of higher math is abstract. Analytical Geometry is probably too much for someone who doesn't know calculus. Really depends on the rigor level of the class though. I got into math by watching numberphile videos. They have some surprisingly deep concepts explained very well. 3blue1brown is also an excellent expositor. I also recommend that you read Spivak's calculus book, it's pretty much universally regarded as the best calculus book in English. If you're bored with math, you might want to look for something else that interests you. Math is definitely not something that's for everyone.

>>9883 OP consider the amount of mundane boring math, hard lessons, repetition, etc. you will have to do in order to get to what interests you in math. And then decide if it's really worth it, like does the joy and interest you have in the math you want to do outweigh how often you feel like this. I think you are just finding out that it may not be your thing. The people who end up sticking with this soykaf aren't just capable of understanding and appreciating it, they appreciate it to such a level where the boring and tedious stuff is 100% worth the reward of understanding a concept. Id argue this evidently isn't the case for you because you are depressed doing it, whatever reward you get from it isn't lasting very long.

My first year in my university has began. And I feel as boring as you, OP. I have to face with chemistry (which I dontt know at all, absolute zero). Math, descriptive geometry, math processing of experiment, and it soo boring, the tasks is difficult. I feel so lazy. Back to the OP topic - for physics understanding i shall recommend Giancoli books. It works for me.

Guys why do you act to me like I am retard? Math is not easy I know. I see you as a family, cyber friends. I have a problem, I need fix it I asked for your help. Please be nice to me. I bored from people in afk but I still have lainchan. Don't be reason of staying away from lainchan.

>>9894 Easy, no one is attacking you. We don't know your background, or your motivation for studying math. All we know is that you are bored and have truble understening your lessons. You could be bored in two cases. One, the things they learn you are to easy, or two, you don't like to learn math. And if your having truble understending the lessons then case number two seams to be the right one. So there is a question why are you studying math? Ok, there might be a third option, your teacher is like kicking dead whales down the beach (it happens). In the link you posted I see book recommendations. Did you try to read those? What is wrong with them (are they writen in confusing way or something else)?

>>9895 I'm bored because I AM ALONE.Don't offend for this, I can't explain my problem. I wanted english resources because your school is better than mine. I don't have time for reading every calculus book or other lessons book. I don't have information of US Uk or Europe math education. Math is universal but my lessons are little bit different from you. One of my lesson is Abstract Math and some anons asked me What is it or said all higher math is abstract. I need your help because of that. I want to be like you, I want to use your resources for learning, think like you and I want talk with you. MIT or your top 500 college are not same like mine. Your teachers are writing books, Our teachers are memorizing books for teaching lessons. I am going school for only they are taking attendence, I have to continue lessons because this is only way for taking examinations.

>>9896 Western schools don't use particularly good text books, IMHO. The textbooks colleges use tend to be a shallow treatment of a large amount of material. They're also padded with review at the front and primer at the end. If you want to self study, the Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series and most Dover reprints are relatively cheap and fairly short. You can also give MIT's free courseware a try. There's also libgen.io if you don't mind reading electronic books. If you've completed a semester of single variable calculus, you know enough to at least start on differential equations. Graph theory and "discrete math" are both subjects you can jump into without any background.

If you can find english versions of those book then I highly recommend those: "Differential and Integral Calculus" (three books) - G.M. Fichtenholz "Introduction to Set Theory and Topology" - Kazimierz Kuratowski "Introduction to Algebra" - Kostrikin Those are the books I used in my first year of studies and they cover the basics of mathematics on a university level. You might be also interested in sets of exercises: "Elements of Logic and of the Set Theory in Problems" - Wiktor Marek, Janusz Onyszkiewicz "Problems in Mathematical Analysis" - Kaczor, Nowak (link: https://books.google.pl/books?id=eoXxBwAAQBAJ&pg=PA379&lpg=PA379&dq=mathematical+analysis+bana%C5%9B+wedrychowicz&source=bl&ots=gz9pgqSs_n&sig=ejYxj_bx7K-WXXMNLBOvMSGOH0w&hl=pl&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi1npHPvJfeAhWChywKHTUsBHwQ6AEwCHoECAEQAQ#v=onepage&q=mathematical%20analysis%20bana%C5%9B%20wedrychowicz&f=false and https://books.google.pl/books?id=UBmIAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA393&lpg=PA393&dq=mathematical+analysis+bana%C5%9B+wedrychowicz&source=bl&ots=VkONlilpX3&sig=NJ9H4SRBYtOSjFrkZIIl07nuP2M&hl=pl&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi1npHPvJfeAhWChywKHTUsBHwQ6AEwCXoECAAQAQ#v=onepage&q=mathematical%20analysis%20bana%C5%9B%20wedrychowicz&f=false ) I had one more set of exercises but a quick google search dosn't produce a english title for me (it might be a book published only in my country). The link to it: http://sucha.eu/~i_photos/studia/Analiza/J.Bana_.S.W%EAdrychowicz.Zbi%F3r.zada%F1.z.analizy.matematycznej.pdf If your interested in using google translator to translate the content of the task then there are a lot of exercises you can do in this book (each section (A, B, C) is more complex). Good luck.

One more advice. Different books sometimes define things in a different way and from that definition they prove the definition from the other book. Example: Book A define B as C and from that they prove D and Book E define B as D and from that they prove C. Its OK to do that because C and D are equivalent but it might be confusing for someone who is just learing those things and reads more then one book.

>>9899 I can't find Kostrikins introduction to algebra in engish(spanish found) but thank you. I save this thread. Calculus is onlyy one lesson. I am waiting for your advices for other lessons except physics, I bought a book fits in my countrys education.

>>9903 Well "Introduction to Set Theory and Topology" should cover a large part of your Abstract Mathematics course if I remember corectly the content of that book.
Sabo Engle · 2018-10-22 12:45
>>9909 Okey thank you. I don't see lesson of Topology, I didn't want get this book because of that but I am finding it now.

Time is 1 AM and I have an exam at 9 am. I dont even know what analytical geometry is. I did give up. But I remembered, there is an indian guy and his website. Khanacademy is fuarrrking awesome. I couldnt understand when I was in lessons at college but I can understand this guys. If I can learn sth about analytical geometry I think make some payment to his site. I havent sleeped more than 2 hours in over 48 hours. I am a terminator.
