Political Hackers
Dujour · 2018-08-19 19:44
Who strikes you as the most important political players in the technology sphere? From what I have read, weev actively develops some of the more radical and press-worthy "right of center" websites on the internet, namely The Daily Stormer and Hatreon. To that effect, Cody Wilson owns Hatreon but I think weev does a lot of the programming and Wilson has garnered a lot of attention in his own right. Read: Defense Distributed and the recent 3D printed gun hysteria. Who am I missing? Are there leftist radicals in tech who aren't hired by some of the major companies like Google and just sold their souls? I feel like those companies are so liberal (not leftist) that they attract some of the power players who care about identity politics soykaf. Chelsea Manning is definitely left of center but honestly I have no idea what she is even doing. Probably just trying to avoid being assassinated by CIA niggers. And that begs the question whether Julian Assange is left as well? He seems fairly independent from ideological trappings (inb4 Putin's suckbuddy). Snowden is just a good person. Jake Applebaum seems left but he was exiled when rumors spread of him being a pervert or something. The problem with the Western "Left" is that they have so many witch hunts that they expel anyone worth a soykaf before they can do anything substantial. Amir Taaki is left I suppose because he served in the over a dozen US military bases in Syrian army, but he is more anarchist in the vein of right-wing libertarians/ancaps such as Cody Wilson.

>inb4 muh sekrit hacker opsec
Op is talking about named personalities, anyone doing something notableillegal is smart enough to not be with these parasites.
>who aren't hired by some of the major companies like Google and just sold their souls?
No, none of the major players for the left that are like this have either been kicked out or are irrelevant by lacking media attention. Thus if they're still out there they're smart enough to not be attracting attention.
>weev
Only an idiot would trust weev. He is a parasite who maintains relevance by placing himself at the forefront of whatever is most popular on the internet at the moment. The unnameable board of this site wants nothing to do with weev and can go into more detail about his trustworthiness if you want some people to rattle off why he's a glitterboy.
>chelsea manning
Irrelevant, fake and gay. He has accomplished one productive thing then chopped his dick off. Much like weev he desires nothing but attention, thus when he decides to put out another leak or breaks into something, will he have a genuine claim to more relevance. Until then everything he's done so far is play off the fame and notoriety from his imprisonment to try and kickstart a political career around trannies and government transparency.
A complete and utter one trick pony.
>witch hunt
The right does this as well, the reason the right has personalities that are nameable at the moment is that the media has either put a spotlight on them or they haven't done anything illegal yet. Weev maintaining the Daily Stormer and Hatreon are not crimes, and aren't even jailable offenses. In fact its work he's doing for the benefit of his camp with Anglin so they can maintain themselves. The maintenance of Hatreon and Anglin's Thai fuarrrk Shack, is because they are denied infrastructure and these people make a living this way. Make it a way of obtaining a living and remove all other paths forward and you'll see more of what you're looking for. And the reason there are so many [i[Right Wing[/i] political hackers is because they can't get a job with someone like jewgle. And once people are in that net they don't come out. Their trustworthiness would be evaluated by whether or not they're a dataminer, something all of these people agree is a red flag. If you want to see more left wing political hackers start kicking them out of Silicon Valley and make them vagabonds like weev or pariahs like Applebaum. Otherwise they'll keep their comfy 400k a year from Microsoft or whoever. Because the only left leaning type I can name off the top of my head is that guy who ran Anon Ops and ran off to Syria to post pictures of him and the Kurds with guns. Not someone worth writing a news story about, not doing anything to gain notoriety, not even a blip on the radar for the current discourse.

I don't really know or even have as much as an opinion about who is currently important in technopolitics, but I would very much like to see this spazzbot make any progress on his projects (http://moronlab.blogspot.com/ for most of the available information). I'm not even a right-winger, I just kinda like his ambition.
Donna Hawthorne · 2018-08-19 21:36
As for left-wing hacktivists, Phineas Fisher and Jeremy Hammond come into my mind.

Stupid question, I guess, but did Weev ever have hacking chops? I know he claims credit behind some Amazon prank and a fax machine prank, but I know little else. I know he gets credit for the AT&T job, but from what I understand, the actual vulnerability and script were done by someone else. I think he had a beef with Freenode, but that's essentially it.

I came in this thread to post this, Most big tech people (people who have an actual say silicon, bay area) are the people with any real power. While they say their left (neo-liberal) they go where ever the money is and pay whoever politician keeps their data farming empire growing.
H.R. Giger · 2018-08-21 23:18
Why repost this soykaf thread here when you got a soykaf reaction on 8chan too?
Weev isn't right winger, or a "hacker". He is an FBI informant and he was anti-fascist before he entered the jail.

Bullsoykaf. Weev is a hacker. He wrote exploit code in late 00s and popularized JavaScript cross-protocol scripting by wrecking the Freenode IRC network among other things. I don't give him much credit for the AT&T hack, though. That was mostly JacksonBrown's doing.
>he was anti-fascist before he entered the jail.
Incorrect. Weev was pretty (paleo)libertarian before he went to prison, but he never called himself an anti-fascist. Hell, he admitted being a fascist on his own blog in 2010. Trust me, I follow this cat for over a decade now and interacted with him on a few occasions and I can confirm that he has always been like a fascist version of John Galt before he went full nazi in 2015.

>he wrote code
he simply stole code, that is all he did
also, don't you think how fast he got out of jail?
not to mention of his ridiculous claims which make him and whole right wing look stupid?
he is a dumb tryhard f4ggot, thinking himself as some "le uber trolle xD"
a literal nobody

The leftists that are tech savvy these days are mostly focused on creating and sustaining independent infrastructure to be used for podcasts and newsfeeds rather than "hactivism" or something. Getting people off of social media and using left or anarchist run infrastructure instead is a big motivator.
The rest are on FB having stupid arguments I think.

I've never met Weev but I have some 2nd order friends with him.
Everyone I know swears up and down the racism is genuine. However, a couple of people who know him possess the melanin, and he hasn't exactly alienated them with his racism thing.
He could have turned states evidence *and* also be a racist, *and* also be trying to hard to troll, and *be totally genuine in his own head.*
No one who'se ever met him has accused him of anything but being extremely annoying.
Netrunner · 2018-08-25 07:41
Phineas Fisher is pretty dope.

Like the other anon said, weev is basically just a phony that browsed racist imageboards so much his brain took some serious damage.
He saw his opportunity for some mediocre fame inside his echochamber without having to put in the work himself, and took it. That's about it. A person not to be trusted with anything at all.
Him being of jewish descent and at the same time having a swastika tattoo should tell you all you need to know.

>Chelsea Manning
Mostly did it for the lulz. He's just a leaker who abused a trusted position he no longer has. I wouldn't expect to hear anything else from him in the future.
>Snowden
Same as Manning, no actual skill just abused trust and will never do anything noteworthy again.
>Jake Applebaum
Is just a sociopath. Politics is way for him to gain power and jerk off his ego.
>he was exiled when rumors spread of him being a pervert or something.
He's been accused of rape. Like actual physical/violent type rape, not the bullsoykaf feminist newspeak type rape.

>weev
>He is a parasite who maintains relevance by placing himself at the forefront of whatever is most popular on the internet at the moment.
Not commenting on the quality of his character but his ideology has always been stable or moving in a consistent direction over the years. I never took him for a bandwagonning larper. I also think you have to admit he does do actual skilled technical work, regardless of what you think about the causes he chooses to help.
>>9075
>the Urbit guy
I wasn't aware of him being politically active in any way. I think he just happens to hold opinions that are socially unacceptable at the moment. Like maybe thousands of years of evolution has produced non-trivial differences between human races. Nazi scum.
>>9086
>People wage slave the politics that give them the most advantages. More news at 11.
Pretty much actually. I think Phineas Fisher is probably the only person/group mentioned who deserves unquestioned respect because we don't know how they are. They do what they do only to make the world a better place. There's not personal gain involved at all.

>manning
>Mostly did it for the lulz. He's just a leaker who abused a trusted position he no longer has. I wouldn't expect to hear anything else from him in the future.
he had sperg episodes where he would autistically screech in a closet then go back to work, he thought the world should see what he considered war crimes, also punched his boss in the face so she had him transfered to the mail room (but he kept his access to classified information like he should not have)
his boss was incompetent, and he was not the only one illegaly copying classified information, he just got in trouble because of the aggression and the publicizing of what he took, nobody else got in trouble
>snowden
>Same as Manning, no actual skill just abused trust and will never do anything noteworthy again.
he just abused his power to get famous
most "leakers" fall into one of two categories
>those with a moral agenda (idealists)
>those with a financial/status agenda (profiteers)
even those surrounding wikileaks said they think assange is tripping on his famous streak, and cannot confirm funds going to wikileaks are not being diverted to his personal account or legal fees because he refused to disclose/get tested for STDs at the request of a sexual partner (considered a sex crime in some countries)
>>9073
The politics of hacking are no longer in the realm of "hacktivists, they had their go because they were more tech savvy than many governments at the time, most governments have caught up, and much of the targeted hacks done for political reasons are large scale propaganda and espionage instead of the virtual equivalent of starting buildings on fire and rioting in the streets
>Manning is definitely left of center but honestly I have no idea what she is even doing.
last I heard, trying to run for senator or something
>Julian Assange is left as well?
assange is a psychopath and self declared cypherpunk and essentially a crypoanarchist
>Snowden is just a good person
he told the news a story, but he got awfully cocky about it like he was some sort of hero, his methods did not seem morally motivated, more like country level blackmail (some people say that makes him good, others say that makes him a traitor)
Political hackers in my mind are the people who find ways to get information and technology in and out of restricted countries under dictatorships, which was predominantly the reason "hacktivism" became a thing, where people saw a social restriction and either raised awareness by hacking (DDoSing a dictatorships internet, taking down a terrorists website or reporting users to their respective governments) that is when hacking became political, the difference is that it was volunteers instead of paid individuals doing it (the activism part)

>he was not the only one illegaly copying classified information, he just got in trouble because of the aggression and the publicizing of what he took,
He took millions of documents and handed them over to a foreign person hours later. There's no way he could have sanitized them to protect assets or American lives. I think that's what sticks in people's throats.
If it really was about the war crimes he would have carefully selected what to leak. Giving away everything he could get his hands on was obviously just an attention seeking/revenge move.
>Political hackers in my mind are the people who find ways to get information and technology in and out of restricted countries under dictatorships,
This is fair. People who obsess about how evil America is need a little bit of global perspective.

They also took away his gun because they were worried he was going to hurt himself or someone else. His digital access was probably the last thing on anybody's minds.

IIRC it was in the documentary we steal secrets
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Steal_Secrets:_The_Story_of_WikiLeaks , they interviewed his (her) boyfriend and he talked about the message correspondences between him and manning, some of the more interesting ones were how manning whined about n0rmies and should have been flagged as a security risk, but he was so good at his job that they ignored his temper tantrums. He also talked about blowing his brains out because he didnt feel welcome with all the homophobic jokes and testosterone filled activities his coworkers partook in.
manning allegedly jammed out to lady gaga while he downloaded all the classified information. There was poor oversight, because when he lost his work clearances, he should have also had his credentials revoked, but somehow did not (which is how he accessed classified information)
