Chiaki J. Konaka, the writer of Lain, has a twitter account and knows what Lainchan is now. He has been writing blog posts about Lain often since it's the twentieth anniversary, it's pretty interesting. This seems like it's gone largely unnoticed by English speaking Lain fans.

It's at moments like these I wish I knew how to read moonspeak.

I for one will welcome our new python coder overlords. Seriously though all the weebs already know about sel and the mentally fuarrrked up too, i hardly doubt many japs will suddenly come to a western site.

>>8429 We lack the cultural surroundings of JP to fully grasp it. It is like explaining Russian jokes to westerners. I wish a lot more writers and designers would document their work like in a diary so people could buy that and get in the mind of the creators. The Hideaki Anno interviews are somewhat like this.
Jane Doe · 2018-07-04 21:34
>>8424 I need to read that interview again. Also, didn't the 'experiment' turn out differently? As I recall, he later said that Japanese and American viewers viewed Lain similarly. I also wish he'd clarify what he meant with 'Japanese values and sensibilities' and 'American values'. I suspect both of these things have shifted since Lain was conceived, and also vary between individuals in those cultures. Now I really wish he'd come on here.

Quick, hide the cheetos and waifu pillows! >>8440 >As I recall, he later said that Japanese and American viewers viewed Lain similarly. You have to keep in mind the demographics of those who've seen Lain. SEL isn't one of the big commercial titans of the anime world, so it's natural that the only people who've seen it are the dedicated fans, who tend to have different perspectives than normal society. Japan has been Americanized to the extent where the people from both countries who hate the mainstream society of their nation will have very similar views. This would be seen by SEL's creators as a negative thing because it reflects the increase in American cultural imperialism, and I'm inclined to agree with them. America wasn't always this cancerous, though. America and Japan have both undergone radical changes which have led them far from their traditional selves. The elites and their media have tried to tell us that change is always good, but those who understand the facts know better. Some improvements have been made, but much of the social change in the past century has been towards tyranny and injustice, and the most revolting part about it is when they try to cover up the horrible effects of that change underneath the handful of good things and the glitz and glam of high technology. That's cyberpunk, and that's why SEL is what it is both on and off of the screen.
Roy Batty · 2018-07-05 12:39
>>8443 Dont forget sel is based on the early cyber culture of the 80s, it references common lisp, macintosh computers and ofcourse the book cyberia by douglas rushkov and other pioneers and theories of john c lilly who also happens to be a early psychadelics proponent. To say its anti american or western is a pack of lies. The closest thing sel is is an extension of psychadelic and computer culture of the late 70s and early 80s.
Random · 2018-07-05 13:56
>>8444 The people in the 70s and 80s cyber culture SEL took inspiration from were derided by mainstream America as loser nerds in their basements. They represented the American counterculture that normal American society wanted to destroy. Of course, mainstream America was only too happy to appropriate the technological developments that those pioneers created and use them to crush dissent even more.

I dug a little deeper with my leet google translate skills and found some interesting things to do with the 20th anniversary of lain. First there's Konaka's blog: https://yamaki-nyx.hatenablog.com/ where he's currently going episode by episode through all of lain sharing interesting details from the production and stuff. It's all in japanese. I also found picrelated 1, Boa are doing something tomorrow which I'm for sure looking forward to. And most interestingly to me is picrelated2, an album from the guy who made the cyberia songs, with official artwork by yosoykafoshe aBe, of some unknown character. I wonder if this character could be perhaps some unknown lain lore in aBes head? Maybe even hint at some further story in the lainiverse yet to come? Or maybe it's nothing. >>8422 The article he re-tweeted talks about lainchan, lainzine, arisuchan and systemspace/tsuki.
