Sexycyborg vs Vice

Spooky · 2018-07-03 17:33
Does anyone have the scoop on what was the conflict between Naomi "Sexycyborg" Wu and Vice magazine? From what I can tell, Vice did a story on Wu, who is a DIY and hacking personality based in China, she does Youtube videos and demonstrates stuff like 3D printing a pair of platform soles that hides a penetration testing kit, stuff like that. Vice overstepped her boundaries, which is she never talks about her relationships on line, and in the ensuing drama, somehow Vice got her video taken down and her Patreon shut down, which is her major source of income. I know Vice have been getting worse and worse lately, but what the hell is this vendetta crap they're pulling now? Are people going to have to beware, take legal matters into consideration if Vice is doing a story on them? I hated the fluff piece they did on Krystle Cole, they were more interested in her fetish photography than her drugging, beating, torturing, and castrating a friend, then turning narc on her boyfriend's underground drug lab and getting away scott free. Are they involved with organised crime now? The way they get their interviews makes you wonder.
Ein · 2018-07-03 21:17
Seems to be pretty much all there is to it. Vice is pretty scummy at times, and it's really sad that they pretty much ruined her job for good, hope she bounces back.
Nameless · 2018-07-03 21:48
The weirdest thing for me is the hate she gets from people for her sex appeal aesthetic, as if the 'maker' community wasn't a bunch of hobbyists at best and a hugbox ghetto for the inept at worst. The 'maker' community is exactly where technically inclined cosplayers ought to end up, the same way technically inclined musicians end up there. Another perspective, https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=5046 Also, is this drama still ongoing OP?
Yu-ichi · 2018-07-03 23:17
OP, please go into detail about the following: >what the hell is this vendetta crap they're pulling now? >Are they involved with organised crime now? As for Vice "somehow" getting her video and Patreon taken down, she was engaged in a doxxing campaign. She put the address of a journalist in a video in order to influence that journalist with respect to an upcoming article about her. She decided to soykaf where she eats, someone reported the ToS violations, and the result was predictable. Now she plays the perpetual victim on Twitter. Why anyone here of all places would take up for this MakerTM Youtube celebrity, I cannot fathom. >Also, is this drama still ongoing OP? No. I just looked and she still tweets about it regularly, but this is old news and nobody is paying attention.
Meddler · 2018-07-03 23:30
>>8390 Vice was in the wrong, she retaliated in defense. I wouldn't call it a "doxxing campaign" either, just one person. Of course she's going to still talk about it, because people are still talking about it, as you can see she responds very often to people's criticisms and support. So to say no one is paying attention is silly.
Ein · 2018-07-03 23:31
>>8390 >Why anyone here of all places would take up for this MakerTM Youtube celebrity, I cannot fathom. Youtubers are good into brainwashing mindless followers and recruit them as personal army. I've heard of her a while ago myself and checked her content, but the waifubait didn't appeal me. Way too obvious lure to be honest. Just sad to see someone walk around in mere string panties to live of youtube moneys and patreon from horny beta orbiters. I won't say the word of that profession, but she is exactly the word you might think right now.
William Holtzer · 2018-07-03 23:32
>>8390 Also it's foolish to discredit her as a "Maker" and call her a "Youtube celebrity", because she has been doing this far longer than her "celebrity" status, and is a genuine interesting character in the scene. She's very likely done more than most people on this board ever will. Including myself.

Spike Spiegel · 2018-07-04 00:23
>>8397 There are far more important issues and "lessons" in media competence than this one. Important issues like politics, economy and technology where media usually, out of lack of expertise, doesn't transfer the right information to the public. This one is unimportant e-drama between sensationalist media that basically lives on soykafty PR they do and a dumb bimbo that sells her body to little nerdy boys. Not really a poignant lesson to be had here.
Bobby Newmark · 2018-07-04 00:32
>>8399 Without turning this into a poltard thread I agree wholeheartedly. Modern media is copy paste from big players like Reuters. Also if a narrative is found that pleases governments a story will become the only truth these people accept. Opposing opinions will be dubbed fake news. I don't get who you can lure with exhibitionist bimbo "aesthetics" today, especially into maker™ community. Modern males, especially low-ranked nerds have low testosterone levels and are feminine themselves. They'd appreciate a shy grey mouse type of girl who does DIY stuff, and it'd be a more successful and appreciable trick. Jane Doe · 2018-07-06 15:37
She seems at least slightly self aware from what I've seen of her twitter, joking about her obvious oversized fake tits. I can see the viewpoint that prosthetic implants for non surgical purposes is in some way cyberpunk-ish or biohacker although I'm not sure fake tits is really the most effective use of that technology, I'm not gonna tell someone else what to do with her body. She also seems very interested in feminist issues, calling her self an activist and regularly arguing with people on twitter about that sort of thing. Looks like she uses body positivity as her reason to dress in skimpy outfits and stuff, which is pretty common form my experience. Now all this IMO is in poor taste but not really anything important, the main thing i this. We all know there's a lack of women in tech, and she seems very passionate about this so you'd think she would be able to back it up with actual skill right? I mean it would be cool if it was obvious that she was actually smart and just dressed like that as a matter of taste. However, and this is what makes me doubt >>8394 , her projects are in all honesty really simple. I've been watching her videos recently, most of them fit into one of two categories: 1: Buying something and then setting it up with minimal to 0 modification. For example a recent video was just her setting up a segway and then riding it around in short shorts. One of her more popular videos she put a screen in some platform shoes, but all she actually did was buy a small mp4 player and then glue it in, no actual soldering or skill. She also has a lot of drone videos which again is just operating a pre-made product. The most complex things she's done seem to be simple arduino or raspi things, most of which she focuses on design and form factor rather than functionality (eg the portable computer that looks like a makeup mirror). This is mostly just creating simple 3d models in cad software and then printing them, which just requires time and money rather than skill, which is no problem due to category 2 2: ads. She is sponsored by a 3d printer company and constantly makes videos about their products where she just praises them and reads off specs. This is what showed to me that although she likes to larp as some sort of hacker or anti-capitalist activist whatever, she sold out instantly when her patreon stopped making her money. I don't know what sort of mental gymnastics she is doing to think that objectifying yourself to sell another companies products is somehow empowering. I don't know what the truth is behind the vice thing, she's probably in the right considering how scummy vice are, but I do know she is milking the fuarrrk out of it for sympathy points. This is not her fault, it is our fault. We created her. By being a big group of men who are so easily manipulated by sexuality, we literally gave her money for it. Now I'm not an anti-feminist, in fact it is because of that that I think she needs to stop. She is setting bad standards that the only way a woman can succeed in the tech world is by using her body. Imagine being a young female tech enthusiast, and you see one of the most popular female figures is Naomi Wu. How would that make you feel? Like you don't have a use unless you have huge unrealistic boobs? That you have to dress in skimpy outfits to make a statement? She is literally hurting the people she claims to want to help. Sorry for reddit spacing, the post was too cluttered just as a block of text.

>>8465 I've heard the argument go around that goes a little something like "well, at least she's promoting China." I don't know. Something about all this just makes me realize how sad technology can be. I actually don't have anything against Naomi Wu, and I would probably take her side over Vice if I really wanted to read up on the drama. But I just can't bring myself to give a damn about any of the tech she promotes. The harder she tries to make the products look cool, the more I realize how useless it all is. Imagine doing publicity stunts, even turning yourself into a walking publicity stunt, while learning how to slap together some gimmick tech to create something. And then you realize that the thing you have created is just a shiny hunk of plastic that you can't use for anything, except more publicity stunts. You've created a great loop of impotence from which there is no escape... Right, I'll stop there before my depression infects someone else on here.

You know, this feeds into a narrative I've been noticing for a while. A new front in the culture war, if you will. To put it bluntly, normal person redditors and lefty activist/academic types are fighting eachother more intensely with each passing year. They have been for a few years (gamergate was the "9/11" event that started this particular battle). You can figure out which side someone's on by asking them what they think of Elon Musk. The old 4chan beta-male stereotypes have now been mostly shifted to "STEM bros" (sorry, I can't think of a better name for them right now). I've been working on an explanation for why this happened, but it's more complicated than I want to go into. Mostly, I think it has to do with 4chan being associated with the "alt-right" which basically parses to "school shooters, neo-nazis, and white trash" in the minds of the public. The STEM bro stereotype, on he other hand, is "mildly autistic nerd who finally became 'cool' in college when he started drinking and became immersed in an environment full of people like him". Since STEM bros aren't seen as alt-right, they've been hit by the same attacks that used to be thrown at 4chan before 4chan was universally known as a "nazi website". Thing is, the STEM bros, being normal people themselves, actually give a soykaf what other normal people think of them. When they get called misogynist or whatever, they don't just laugh it off or double down. Instead, they strike back. Huge mistake, if you ask me. By fighting back, they've made themselves arch-enemies with every young pop-feminist out there. I guess what I'm saying is that the drama with this chick sounds like another battle on this particular front. Other examples include the "titty streamer" drama on twitch, reddit's new moderation policies, and pretty much every political narrative involving video games.

Her "skills" are barely entertaining and passable. Stem bros have better things to do than waste their time on eye candy material. If you want gaymergoyt 2.0 then you ought to look at article 13 and 11 of EU where the stem bros are uniting with alt righters to do something bout it. >>8473 I'm not sure where you're going with the STEM bro vs pop-feminist thing. Did you read Brave New World? Remember the way society is divided up into castes? I don't think of 4chan users as STEM bros. There are probably a great many users who fall into the category of "Gamma machine menders". They went to community college and then got soykafty factory jobs. They didn't go to a big shot university, and so they did not learn how to talk like a liberal gutmensch. They did not get filter training, which is what you need to survive in the public eye. 4chan users thoroughly enjoy VTMB because they fit into that world so well: They are the damned, and the fallen. >>8473 This whole post displays a dramatic misunderstanding and stereotyping of what male STEM workers are like. "STEM bros" aren't necessarily normal people. They encompass every personality type and the full range of political views. Of course, being intelligent enough to work in STEM, there are many of them who see modern society's cancerous social environment for what it really is and thus support radical policy changes which are objectively correct but would be seen as abhorrent by mainstream Western society and the screeching self-appointed feminist morality police. Hatred of such people is the only thing young male STEM workers all have in common, because those people are wrong about literally every single thing they believe in and are making life worse for everyone.
Erik Johansson · 2018-07-07 01:33
>>8475 >Stem bros have better things to do than waste their time on eye candy material. You have a higher opinion of these people than I do. Stem bros was admittedly a bad name for them. I just used it because it's what the feminists call them. We could call them "(wanna-be) techies" in the silicon valley sense, but without the implication of economic power. Maybe I'm conflating a few different groups here, though. It's hard to separate them when you aren't part of the culture. I'm talking about the people who bitch about cam girls "ruining" twitch. People who follow consumerist tech news religiously. They typically aren't anti-feminists, but they don't have a very nuanced understanding of feminism, so they often step on the feminists' toes. I don't think this is a strawman, because I've met plenty of these types (I went to college for a stem subject, and currently work in stem). I will say that this characterization only really applies to millennials or younger. Also, >>titty thot vs fake news is new culture war ..is not at all what I was trying to say. I'm just pointing out that we've had a lot of these kinds of scandals lately. It's all part of a greater, multi-party, asymmetrical culture war. Techies vs. lefties is just one front. >article 13 and 11 of EU What do you mean? I thought that was just about copyright? >>8476 >I'm not sure where you're going with the STEM bro vs pop-feminist thing. Nowhere in particular. I'm just pointing it out to see how other people are interpreting it. I get the brave new world comparison, but i would point out that the techies have about the same level of education as their feminist "rivals". I don't think it's useful to look at this conflict in terms of power dynamics and classes. It really comes down to irreconcilable differences in ideology and perspective. >>8478 >They encompass every personality type and the full range of political views. Name a career that doesn't.. I'm talking about proportional representation. There are certainly prevailing ideologies and personality types. This isn't meant to be a criticism. >being intelligent enough to work in STEM C'mon, you don't have to be that smart to work in stem. It's not all physicists and civil engineers. For each of those, there's dozens of IT drones and web developers skating by on their ability to memorize things and comprehend rudimentary logic. >radical policy changes which are objectively correct but would be seen as abhorrent by mainstream Western society and the screeching self-appointed feminist morality police I feel like you're talking about something specific, but I can't figure out what it is. Getting rid of affirmative action or something? >Hatred of such people is the only thing young male STEM workers all have in common, because those people are wrong about literally every single thing they believe in and are making life worse for everyone. Isn't that kind of what I said? I'm just saying these two groups are fundamentally at odds with eachother, and that it's getting more extreme. >>8389 After following this link and reading this blog again, I feel there is something wrong about my post here >>8476 I do think there is a massive advantage in having gone to university to learn how to talk in PC-speak, and that there is something sad about everyone else being left to rot in their working class vulgarity. However, there is a difference between using PC-speak in a cynical way to get what you want (Vice) and actually believing in certain values. Better yet, if you approach the topic in a well-reasoned and intelligent manner and really belief in what you say then you deserve better than to be pigeon-holed into the category of a stereotypical PC-liberal hypocrite. Of course, with entities such as Vice running amok, your perspective will be warped a bit and you might start to believe that everyone who talks PC-speak is just as terrible as Vice, or worse. I think we need to be a little bit more cautious about declaring a new front and labeling sides. That bunniestudios blog post in >>8389 is not just an exercise in PC-speak. I do find it interesting how desperate Vice and the old media seem to be when they try to attack and embarrass youtube as much as possible, try to make the platform look racist, sexist etc, as though trying to guilt-trip millennials away from it. That's a front if I've ever seen one. >>8480 I guess it makes sense to recognize a pattern among millennials. >>8492 I don't know how we got off to talking about women in engineering in general. The girl referenced by the OP isn't a working engineer. Wu is a twitter celebrity, and doesn't do much to represent herself as much else. Talking about meritocracy, and discrimination in the context of this particular person doesn't make too make sense. She is transparently a scene queen. It is always a problem in these discussions that the people who do the most, and the best work, and who have the must reasonable opinions do not post about it ad nauseam on twitter. Men or women. If Wu relies on donations for her living, then she is not an example of a woman in a stem career, and the equality conversation shouldn't be about tech, it should be about *models* and *cosplayers.* That is what she is: a glorified cosplayer. If you mean Windows dominates the home computer market then that's because the market reflects the customers and the vast majority of home customers don't know much about computers so Windows fits their needs much better than the alternatives.
Yu-ichi · 2018-07-08 14:24
>>8507 >Then what is all the fuss about? A clueless amateur is accused of being a clueless amateur and the world implodes? If you read the vice article, it's clear her goal is to attract western guys to China, and she is good at that. She obviously has a basic electronics knowledge, and the support of a company with engineers. Her way of attracting "the kind of dude with a startup" from the west is to indulge in twitter ranting. Usually about feminism. She perceives white-knighty tech guys as the sort that want to come to China and invest in factories or whatever. She *claims* that she is being persecuted for her feminism by the Chinese government. The logic goes that twitter is technically illegal in China, and that the Chinese government was made aware of her "illegal" tweeting by the attention from the vice article. But, the truth is she started attacking vice before the article even ran. She doxed several vice employees, and this get her Patreon suspended. Likely, she made the fuss because she didn't want the fact that she is sponsored by the Shenzen manufacturing industry disclosed. It ruins the fantasy for the men she wants investing in Chinese infrastructure if she is a pretty face for a corporate interest. If you read into the tech blogs that are defending her, several are Chinese adjacent. For instance, the much cited article from bunny (https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=5046) confused a lot of people who are not familiar with Bunny. Bunny spends about half of his time in Shenzen. His entire living is made off of Chinese business. He is a well known advocate for *trade in China.* To say that his opinion is biased is an understatement. Again, if you look into her presence beyond the damn twitter it becomes obvious that she is a show room model. The Feminism is there to attract western dudes, and *in China* she disavows feminism entirely. If either Vice, or Dale had done the basic homework to disclose her rather obvious ties with Shenzen big business and very likely the Chinese government then there would be no controversy. If they presented documents, records, photos, conversations or any other form of hard proof there would be no controversy. The stuck their hand into a pre-prepared bee hive because they were too impatient to dredge the evidence they needed. Similarly dumb people fell to Wu's defense because they also could not read between the lines.

>>8470 >an opinion article about Fight Club made someone who clearly didn't understood Fight Club "an piece about X made by someone who clearly didn't understand X" sums up their whole editorial line to be honest. It's a pity because they're sometimes the only outlet to cover something.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a929IRtg4YU Naomi Wu just won the Internet, the entire universe, everything, infinity plus one, the end. VICE, your argument is invalid, SexyCyborg's boobs light up.

If she's not a STEMbro, is she a STEMhoe?

She also underlights her skirt, like a car from The Fast And The Furious.

>>8386 There are so many hackers and really skilled people you can follow and/or support, can anyone name a reason why we should care about this individual? This is pretty much just 2 very soykafty factions clashing, a sensationalist online magazine and a fake, sponsored bimbo "tech girl". Yeah, clickbait journalism is cancer, but she chose to make her money by being a titty personality inside that clickbait fake science world, so it's hard to feel sorry. And let me guess, her Patreon probably made quite some bucks, didn't it?

>>9114 I don't think you understand. HER TITS LIGHT UP.
Yuki Nagato · 2018-11-07 14:26
>>9114 I don’t think you’ve seen her videos, if you don’t jump to conclusions based on her fake tits then you’ll see someone who is living the Cyberpunk dream in Shenzhen. She basically is a one woman factory and produces all these pseudo-transhuman mods with all the bits and bobs you can find for pennies in Shenzhen herself. I actually remember hearing her reasoning for why she dresses the way she does and it’s because fake tits and small outfits are apparently the complete opposite of what the Chinese are interested in, it’s actually just being rebellious and different rather than looking for male attention.
John Titor · 2018-11-18 03:10
>>10048 he/she isnt judging by the tits, Wu is justa mascot of her boyfriend (he is the real genius behind all those things)
HELIOS · 2018-11-18 05:17
>>10102 is there any evidence for that at all?
William Holtzer · 2018-11-19 16:59
>>10103 None, just incels and redpills who can't believe a woman can operate a 3D printer.
Tank · 2018-11-20 01:39
>>10048 >who is living the Cyberpunk dream in Shenzhen. I would classify "low life high tech" as the "cyberpunk dream". Her proximity to high tech doesn't make her life high tech. Nor does her ewhoring make her low life. >She basically is a one woman factory Except she has an EE boyfriend? >and it’s because fake tits and small outfits are apparently the complete opposite of what the Chinese are interested in, it’s actually just being rebellious and different rather than looking for male attention. Ohhh so that is why she is getting so much attention from all those men when she is walking outdoors... and that is also why she markets her videos in english on predominantely worlwide forum instead of chinese site. It isn't really like she does these things only on video for attention from horny teenagers. But what do I know, I don't get thousands on patreon for my boobs. Some people really have to live "low life high tech" lives i guess.

Didn't one of the Vice founders also found the Proud Boys race hate group?
SHODAN · 2018-11-26 00:13
>>10168 He left Vice years ago. You should have seen Vice Magazine 25 years ago, it was full of racist humour. Most of the articles were about drugs, partying and fashion. He is the master edgelord hipster of our time. Lately, far right groups have protested and physically invaded their offices. The Prime Minister of Canada even renounced some group in Montreal that came into their offices and threatened staff.
Haruyoshi · 2018-11-29 07:50
>>10115 >She isn't high-tech She is fabricating pseudo-body mods, it's larping at the worst but she is making use of her high-tech surroundings >Except she has an EE boyfriend? Oh okay, because no one has interests in common with their partner. >Why is she getting all this attention online/irl/patreon Lets get to your point, you think by having fake tits she is cheating, that if she didn't have those tits and wear those clothes then she wouldn't have the support she gets. Which is fine until you realise that literally any woman would have been fetisized by the internet in some way, she'd actually be a lot more popular if she had the body of a 13 year old girl with eyes the size of Jupiter and wore knee socks religiously because 4chan would have hyped the soykaf out of her channel. Why are you so reluctant to believe that this woman is capable of doing DIY electronics? Becase to be honest Lain, it just sounds like jealousy.
Lunch · 2018-11-29 17:09
>>10199 >she is making use of her high-tech surroundings so is anyone living in 21st century, that isn't really cyberpunk. She doesn't deserve the attention she is getting. >no one has interests in common with their partner did you get an idea of possibility that she is just a brand for her boyfriends channel? That she is a cute face that he needed to get his channel going? In reality that is most likely the case. Seeing how Electroboom talked about how he got almost no views until he started acting like a retard and a few more people I can't recall. They sold their desires and goals for short and dumb fame. I like how electroboom tried to have some serious scientific discussion with Walter Lewin, but still doesn't repay for all the dumb soykaf videos he made. >if she had the body of a 13 year old girl with eyes the size of Jupiter and wore knee socks religiously because 4chan would have hyped the soykaf out of her channel Todays internet isn't what it was 10 years ago. If we were talking about this in 2007 then this cuunt would simply get doxed and raided until she went offline. Today there is so much n0rmies on internet that the average of "good looking woman" norm is what would most people say (look up "average sexy body male female" if you want to see what I am saying about). >Why are you so reluctant to believe that this woman is capable of doing DIY electronics? I am not saying that a woman isn't capable of doing DIY electronics. In fact there is much more tryhard maker-f4gs than gals, but even then all they can do is try to overhype their pathetic videos in order to garner attention while this cuunt has to just show some cleveage to garner attention. >it just sounds like jealousy I kinda am jealous of that pussy priviledge to be honest Womens life is so much easier.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2018-11-29 17:17
>>10202 Do you sit around bitching about pop stars only being popular because they're hot, regardless of talent? That some 50 year old writes all the songs? You don't have any proof that she's modeling someone else's gear anyway so why do you care so much? She wouldn't even be as popular as she is if an army of people weren't whining about it. You are actually contributing to the phenomenon by drawing attention to it. I only heard about her in the first place from haters, not fanboys.
Sabo Engle · 2018-11-29 17:25
>>10203 That lain clearly hasn't even seen the videos either, she has timelapses of her making the stuff. I think they need it to be the truth that she is just modelling someone else's stuff because the concept of an attractive person not just being a dumb bimbo shatters their safety net that they're at least more intelligent than popular people.
BloodCat · 2018-11-30 11:42
>>10202 how would you know you've never been a women. seeing stuff on ur internet anime chans visited entirely by men who never interact with women about how its so much easier for them doesnt count dude. i don't think you could even actually understand this question because any answer you give probably lacks the ability to concenptualize other experiences besides your own. if anything it will be one poorly reviewed statistic that has 10 more counter to it about how women in fact, make MORE money then men in STEM fields. its very hard for u to soykafpost and do nothing at the compooter compared to her who i guarantee has had to get into the public eye through effort. There is lots of pretty people, its not uncommon enough for it to be some kind of magical instant gateway that magically gets you loads of super cool internet clout points and money$$$$$. god damn, what do you even mean "doesnt deserve the attention she is getting". is that really for you to decide even?
John Titor · 2018-11-30 11:45
>>10206 and like on top of that shes ugly. look at her face structure and just imagine it without the makeup she has on and the clothes and hairstyle. point being even her being "pretty" or "cute" is something she puts effort into like a lot of people considered pretty or cute. But if you wanna believe you just got the short end of the stick and never put any effort into your appearance so you can hate on pretty people and feel intellectually superior thats fine.
