Hello, lain. I was wondering about your relationship to this site, so I have a few questions. Feel free to answer any, all or none of them, and optionally flame me for daring to ask. I know this thread kind of smells /q/ but nobody reads /q/, it's not a complaint, it's not directed at administration and it's not really about the site, it's about lainon's impression.
1. How and when did you find this place?
2. Did you ever frequent it?
3. Do you care about the SEL theme? Did you come here for lain?
4. Do you consider this more of a lambda or a cyberpunk place; which is more important to you?
5. What direction do you think the site is going?
6. Does the strong, political and sometimes even religious attachment of some posters to left, right, anarchism, gnu, open source, privacy, etc. annoy or comfort you?
I'll start.
I arrived pretty early, May or June '14 when the place was fresh. I don't remember the front page that kalyx loved tho. A person who lurked /g/ told me about a 'lain chan' and I instantly jumped in because I was still on the SEL hype train after watching it. I frequented the place until late 2015 but then got bored of the brewing soykaf on IRC, been on-off ever since. I also grew out of SEL and what brought me here once now became an annoying factor as new people kept making the same threads about the same boring lainist ideas.
I'd say the place is leaning more towards lambda lately, the cyberpunk branch mostly moved to arisu or left entirely. This place was a lot more /cyb/ back then. I'm still unsure if the schism was a good idea. On the one hand, both new sites kinda suck; lain feels stale and arisu has negative traffic. On the other hand, the half year or so before the schism was a high speed problematic stale. I kinda hope that one day people will stop comparing their values so much and return to intelligent discussion that focuses more on connections and patterns rather than tribes. This means that I find all of 6. annoying.

1. Don't recall.
2. Only after megachan disappeared. This place isn't even all that similar but no other site was either, and I miss megachan so much that I settled here for my cyberpunk fix.
3. To a point. I've watched the series three times but it's the particular cyberpunk atmosphere here that I like; the discussions about both fiction and reality.
4. It's a mix. As for my preferences, I guess I already answered that :)
5. The direction nosedives from time to time when small groups or even one individual tries to steer every thread in their personal direction. The userbase is small enough that it is actually possible to derail a majority of threads but these little coups always blow over. Right now I'd say it's smoother sailing than at other times. I'm in no way concerned with the Normy Invasion others are; it's just never coming. The heyday of imageboards is passing.
6. People who miss the entire goddamn point of participating in a community like this and astroturf the place with ready made political spam that can be found anywhere else online these days need to fvck off. The political range here will be wide and discussions heated, but single issue fanatics and dedicated street teamers for any ideology should probably consider fighting for their beliefs elsewhere than an imageboard named after an anime girl ...but that might involve getting exposed to sunlight or people who will punch them in the face for being as rude in person as they are to others here.
> the cyberpunk branch mostly moved to arisu or left entirely
Dunno... arisu is more weeby though. The traffic there is so slow it's hard to categorize, as there is hardly enough going on to name any overall trends. It's unlikely that very many people post there who don't also still post here.

1. I think it was around a year and a half ago, maybe two years now. I think I found it from 420chan's /dis/ board linking over to /drg/ here. The mix of lamda, cyb, and rare but interesting drg discussion lured me in.
2. I check it every other day or so. I post whenever I feel like I can contribute meaningfully, so it depends on what kind of threads are around. Sometimes once in two weeks, sometimes one a day.
3. I think the SEL is a good thing, helped set the atmosphere of the site when I first found it (ie: don't brew soykaf, slower pace, focus on tech/cyb/etc). I didn't come here specifically for lain, it was just the icing on the cake I guess.
4. Hard to say. It seems more lambda now, but that could just be me. I think both are equally important to me, and I wish there was a bit more cyberpunk representation.
5. For a while it seemed to be going downhill with soykaf political posting, which scared me since this is one of the last chans I enjoy, but that seems to be settling down now.
6. Yes and no. Nice to see different viewpoints, great to read in-depth discussion, annoying to see soykaf-storm threads full of ranting and raving. Most annoying aspect is when lowbrow arguments dominate on both sides. Hope that doesn't sound too elitist.

1. When I found it referenced on 8/tech/ back when I was a complete new user and wondered what that depressed looking girl with the strange ascii and rendered art was. It was also when I was wondering what the hell Tsukichan was about.
2. Almost immediately after I arrived I lurked constantly and started posting two months after arrival.
3. I like the theme and the site would be less without it. I did not come here specifically for Lain but I watched the series shortly after coming here.
4. I'm not a technical genius so I can't participate much in the high level discussions and I consider any half assed attempt at posting in them from me to be an insult to the people who can. I'll watch and learn when I feel like it, but when there is a good thread I don't feel the need to soykaf it up. The social aspect that cyberpunk brings is one I participate more in and gives a nice flavor to the site as well.
5. An influx of users from 8chan's decay, people on 4/g/ arriving here once in a while. It will continue to grow. Lainchan has never really done anything to garner much attention and because it sits at the fringes of the less frequented boards of most other sites it probably will last for as long as Appleman pays the site bill and keeps his soykaf together, and that will continue as long as people post on the site and make it worthwhile for him.
6. There is a bias from far-left to libertarian right that is prevalent here. But it doesn't bother me, I just accept it as being the native ideology of the site and the one the moderators themselves have so I'll be mindful unless of course its an actual discussion on politics. The tech politics are probably something that causes more friction than someone posting nigger, kike, and piggy every four sentences. More specifically the systemd controversy and the discussion of developer personalities. Those are the only two arguments I can think of where I've seen any real temper on this site and the mods have actual fear over it. Probably because it would invite the soykafflinging that you see on 8chan and 4chan which is just a symptom instead of a cause but its the mods call and I think it does nothing more than aggrevate some users instead of ending the discussion. There does seem to be a two-three back and forth rule on ad hominems here. Where at the second or third round the mods call it over. But overall it doesn't bother me much and it does serve as a filter to people trying to import 8chan here, while on the inverse making it easier for people from reddit if they come here to participate. So pick your poison really.

1. a thread on /a/
2. yes
3. yes and fuarrrk YES! I LOVE LAIN!
4. both. cyberpunk
5. I've been seeing a lot of politics as of late and a bit of drama, and that scares me a little.
6. see number 5. I do not give any damn fuarrrks about politics and every single time a website starts getting all political, the fun gets ruined. I hope the mods crackdown on this!

1. dont remember the exact circumstance. 2-3 years ago after watching lain. sometimes i just spend time diving down random rabbit holes and one of them lead here. i think i started posting here shortly after appleman took over.
2. i take breaks, but for the most part i'm on here daily
3. i see it as a beacon that attracts a certain kind of person. also, like >>8321 said it sets the atmosphere/tone. it's definitely what originally caught my interest.
4. i like that the cyberpunk aspects of this site are backed up with actual expertise, at least when it comes to prog/tech/sec. it keeps this place from feeling like a LARP or a william gibson fan club or tsukichan.
5. hard to say. it's certainly more active now then when i first joined. we seem to be doing a lot of self-reflection lately. not sure what to make of that. as for more long-term predictions, i'm hoping groups like this will be able to incubate the next generation of online counter-culture as imageboards die out. maybe this is just optimism, but i think we're in a good position to do so. people here are willing to try new/obscure software without feeling like we have to wait for some critical level of mass adoption, and we have just enough people to bootstrap past the initial "nobody to talk to" phase. it's not like i think we're all going to move to retroshare next week, but it's encouraging to see threads like that continuing to pop up, because eventually something is going to stick. in other words: keep the cutting edge sharp, lainons!
6. neither. i do think strict enforcement of the "elaborate/argue in good faith" rule is important though. ideologically, i pretty much agree with >>8324 and >>8317 .

1. Must have been a few years ago trough uboachan that went to soykaf around that time (i dont wanna bring things up, i knows theres a few uboachanners around here).
2. I check every day twice.
3. Lets all love lain!
4. Bit of both and thats how i like it.
5. Either it lives or dies, so far so good, should we be worried?
6. Sometimes when it brews out a soykafstorm, but i suppose the difference in opinions can create some interesting discussions.

I came here after Megachan died and infinitychan's cyber board fizzled out.
I think I showed up during Masturbategate...

1. A couple months ago, I switched to Arch. I'd heard about ricing l, decided to try it, and just searched for images from the unixporn subreddit, as I didn't know where else to look. I saw one with a picture of Lain, accidentally opened the thread, scrolled down and saw a link to here.
2. I do frequent it. Where else could I go?
3. It's how I found it, but it isn't so important to me now.
4. Lambda, although I'm more interested in cyberpunk.
5 + 6. Can't really say. I'm a reddit refugee and haven't any compass when it comes to these, and I've not been here very long.
