News Sources
Dox · 2018-06-11 21:45
Where do you get your news lains? Currently it's one of the only things keeping me on reddit. It has decent enough mods and enough users to get stuff live but I want to try some other places and phase reddit out completely. It's a black hole once I get on it.
Erik Johansson · 2018-06-11 23:06
ironically twitter is really good for this
mainstream media mostly misleads (holy alliteration batman) by withholding context, either selectively or generally. twitter gives you a quick way to aggregate a bunch of news sources and compare coverage, both in terms of what gets covered and how different news sources cover the same events. also a lot of journalists now are having conversations our in public and doing a lot of explaining their take on the news, which is helpful in evaluating their reporting
of course, all this assumes that you want to put in the real effort it takes to be informed on current events in the modern world, and it's getting to the point where i'm less and less convinced that it's worth it

At this stage the most sensible compromise will be finding few journalists who are credible (ON THE FOOT) and just check their twitter feed. It is not foolproof but at least you are in charge of spectacle that could be easily contaminated by business purposes.
I was absolutely amused to find out there was a SINGLE fuarrrking journalist, brave woman, during Syrian crisis when all the glitterboys were talking about Assad gassing their own people. It happened again, former British general were cut off from the interview by pointing out what was obvious. madness ensues

Thanks. Do you recommend any particular journalists? I feel like starting from scratch is a bit wasteful.
Also what app do you use? Is it worth it to use ab alternative to the stock app?

Other than the obvious that he is a YTer that filters through normal news sources for the stories in his vids and might be tainted by their bias, I find that Phill Defranco is pretty good. But I've decided to dedicate maybe a half an hour or less each day to reading news in order to not get stressed out wading through the soykaf. If you're looking for news on US defense issues, I find that Small Wars Journal links to good news posts in their Blog Posts section. For news on Russia, Johnson's Russia List is well worth reading. Other than that, I don't really read much news.

I get my news from the domain specific sources where I can.
I read the whitepapers themselves when they are published.
I watch the actual statements from politcians, and read the laws.
I examine the evidence myself when it is released to the public in court cases (in the U.S a lot of evidence is scanned into the public record.)
And for Gossip I read the daily mail because it's funny as fuarrrk.

I don't care much for the news, most soykaf that the news reports on are insignificant and sensational. If something big happens (trump-kim summit, tommy robinson, etc.), I usually hear about it on 8chan and then go check its validity on various other websites (because 8chan isn't really a reliable source of news).

You know, as I mad that list, I was thinking "I bet someone will make a post that's just ">rationalwiki", like they've just made some kind of point." I even imagined an anime girl reaction image.
Somehow I feel no satisfaction at being proven right, just very tired. Can this generation formulate an opinion and express it in words, or is the future of online communication copypasting greentext and smug anime girls?

Every page on rationalwiki might as well start with "As we all know..." and end with "...and anyone who disagrees is an idiot that doesn't understand science". I Honestly haven't spent enough time to figure out if the people on there are just extremely self-satisfied, or if they actually think they're being objective. Either way, it's a hell of an echo chamber.

>snopes
As much as I want to hate snopes, I have to admit that they are a decent information aggregator. Good way to quickly get up to speed on an issue. You just have to completely ignore the initial "truth-meter" or whatever and read the article. It always gives good sources and does its best to justify its claims. The authors inevitably let their political biases seep through, but once you figure out what those biases are, it's easy enough to correct for them. I'd say sycophantic deference to authority is snopes' biggest issue. Lots of articles will boil down to: "these crazy people say X is bad for you, but the FDA says X is not bad for you so we're marking this as 'false'". It's up to you to verify that the FDA's position is justified, because snopes will always default to the party line. Fair enough, they don't want to engage in speculation. It's just that I don't think enough people realize that about them.

My philosophy when it comes to news is pretty much "read everything". Yeah, you could probably find a curated collection of news sources that you trust (at the risk of living in a filter bubble), but then you don't get to hear people's reactions to events; you only hear about the event itself. I think it's important to hear e.g. what fox news is saying about X, and how CNN is spinning X, and how far left bloggers are taking X, etc. etc. It's very time-consuming but eventually you get used to how different groups tend to report on certain kinds of stories.

Do you have another of the 1st pic's survey after 2016? It would be interesting to see what kind of impact Trump had on those stats.
XERXES · 2018-06-15 07:46
News sources?
First hand or nothing. I'm normally fast enough to track it in real time.
Take the Las Vegas mass shooting last year for example - there were multiple shooters, and the entire official story is a cover up, but anyone not listening to what was being said on the police scanners, or by people live streaming (from other hotels not near Mandalay bay) wouldn't have a clue.
The down side is you can't talk to people because they believe if they don't know it, then it is impossible for you to know. Plus it's not my job to convince others.

Interesting surveys. Trusting any news source is pretty bad though. They're all companies and work within their best interests, they don't actually care about the news. I don't watch the news, or read it from anywhere. It's pretty obvious it's just a petty grab for power, pawns upon pawns upon pawns, all the way down. Everyone is controlled by somebody else, and those that don't react to the whims of others are often portrayed in a negative light. Hmmm... I wonder why that might be?
It'd be nice if there was a way to get news with no political leanings, anonymity, and no money involved. It's like finding a good translator, really. Unless you learn the language yourself, you're at the translator's whim.

For some reason, I've noticed that if you can turn a position into a joke, it seems to be able to get more people to believe in it instead of an argument backed up with facts.

Rationalwiki actually isn't that bad. Most people take a look at one article there and immediately bounce, usually because the wiki has many liberal views that piss off a lot of people, believing that the website that confines itself to the mythical "liberal hivemind". I mean hell, look at their article on communism, they soykaf all over it: https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Communismx

Police scanners are not a source of perfect information, Lain. The early stages of the police investigation and response process are mostly hearsay. On the topic of the LV shooting though what's your personal theory? I don't see why to believe in multiple shooters and as of now I'm just assuming he was a cold-war-era sleeper agent who triggered himself by accident, like old unexploded ordinance.
Dr. X · 2018-06-21 18:16
mostly these days I just absorb news from people around me. I'm plugged in enough that I hear about most important things pretty rapidly.
Sometimes I'll read something on the intercept when I'm interested in actual investigative journalism. They do their homework.
Dox · 2018-07-24 01:55
http://noagendashow.com/ - Relatively impartial, they call media on their BS and lies.
Thinnest long standing layer of controlled opposition I've ever seen. Not Alex-Jones tier, redpilled, but VERY subtle. They won't be shouting about "muh juice" or "pizzagate", but will make references. Dig in if appropriate.
Basically, the whole world is a stage; These guys worked in media, and know this is true. One claims to have attended Bohemian Grove, the other is the first "podcaster", ex-MTV VJ, and uncle is CIA. That said, they seem genuine enough at meetups, aren't rich asshats by any means, and only take volunteer donations (perfect cover).
TL;DR: news aggregation & deconstruction + comedy shtick. Well worth a listen (and donation) for two 3hr shows per week. Don't really need anything else than noagendashow.com

I think the point was that Twitter puts you in direct contact with organizations and people you want to hear from without any biased journalism in the middle distorting the message.
Sabo Engle · 2018-07-27 18:36
Usually I get much of my news from local-based articles shared on social media, the Washington Times (although I take things with grains of salt), Forbes (grains of salt too), and videos from certain commentators such as Styxhexenhammer666 although I will say I do have some disagreements with him from time to time.
Other than that, I will say I do visit the websites of CNN and Fox News from time to time but I tend to view their content simply as perspectives and sometimes as satire especially for CNN.

True enough. I think people were actually more critical of the media when there was less to choose from though. Sure, people cry about the "mass" media and fake news so much now but that's because media outlets tailored to suit their individual tastes exist, along with the echo chambers of social media. That's not being critical so much as being dismissive of whatever you don't like.
I hear that people in the USSR were quite media savvy. Pravda lied to them every day so everyone learned to read between the lines and see what was being insinuated. That skill is disappearing and confirmation bias is a real threat to the spread of the truth.

I disagree a bit. I think consuming news can bring down happiness if it's just consumed and nothing is done beyond that. The reason for the news is to create an informed public, but it's the public's part to engage in responsible debate and discussion in order to develop informed ideas on the issues of the day.
That said, it's an unfortunate truth that most people (at least most that I know) seem to prefer screaming at each other over the Internet and sometimes in person rather than have a rational discussion.
Loosely relevant:
A new documentary came out called Dark Money (https://www.darkmoneyfilm.com). In it, as a subplot, an investigative journalist loses his job and starts up an news non-profit which he then uses to report on campaign violations of a local politician. Just throwing that out there to show there are still some good guys trying to report the facts in the news world.

There is a line I've started to draw as far as individual details go. It's important to be aware of what's happening in the world (that's what I keep tellling myself at least) but reading or listening to so many details of so many horrific things every single day doesn't accomplish anything other than make me feel awful...
> and nothing is done beyond that
Exactly. You can be as informed as you like but it doesn't change anything.
There's something dehumanizing about watching the world go to hell through the safety of a screen while not being able to do a thing about it. I watch all the coverage of forest fires going on this year and realize, the woods here could catch on fire and I'd have to home and pack a bugout bag and evacuate the cat somehow. Until that day, if it comes, it's all going on somewhere else.

I do have to admit a need to take a break once in a while. Especially because it seems like a lot of the chaos in the news is being generated deliberately to wear people down on the issues of the day.
That said, given the frustration you're feeling, it might be worthwhile to take part in some community organization. If nothing else to confirm the idea that you have more agency in the world than you think.
I mentioned the Dark Money film earlier. At the lobby of the movie theatre was a pamphlet for a group called Citizens Take Action. I haven't checked out the website yet, but the pamphlet says the group is about getting a constitutional amendment to force a reduction of money in the campaign finance system.
A constitutional amendment is extremely difficult by nature, but it appears there are a number of proposals on the books and the group seems to think they are closing in on the number of people in Congress willing to sign on to one of them. Maybe it would be worthwhile to join up with them and help out? (http://www.citizenstakeaction.org)
I'm not a part of this group as I only just found out about them. For myself, I donate blood when I can. Today I just gave out 2 pints (or bags or what-have-you) of red blood cells. They draw out the blood, pull out the red blood cells and put the rest back in with a saline solution for volume. Kind of uncomfortable, but I feel like I'm helping out.
I think that's the key to keeping positive about things.

When I was younger and had more energy I did community radio, tried to feed homeless people, tried to stop several unfortunate developments from being built and many other things. Nothing I participated in ever amounted to anything and only contributed to my political fatigue.
