There is some serious case of censorship going around twitter lately

Delilah · 2018-03-26 16:54
Twitter just silently blacklisted all archive links (such as links to archive.is) in an ongoing effort to suppress right-wing "conspiracy theories". What do you guys think about this?(Please provide source material when making such threads)

I don't use twitter. You can always switch to GNU Social or Mastadon, like the Spaniards. https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/thousands-of-spaniards-leave-twitter-for-gnu-social

Good for them.

>>7441 I think it's more or less a phase. We"ve seen this story before in other areas. The public gets angry about something, the government starts to feel the pressure and that pressure comes down on businesses to act. The businesses do something to appease their customers and eventually it all blows over. The question isn't that Twitter is doing it now so much as what will they do once the moment passes.

>>7441 I've read somewhere that twitter is for famous people only, where a herd of Sheep follow their masters. So, I'm intrigued to ask you, "Are you a famous person or a sheep?".
Unspecified · 2018-03-26 17:39
>>7446 I happen to be a very famous sheep, Lain.
Undisclosed · 2018-03-26 17:49
>>7447 A famous sheep from a herd of sheep is still a sheep.

>>7448 Man. That's so zen... I never thought of it that way.

There is no source on this the only other post related is this, wish all the poster is saying is your post looks like automated spam. https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/8780ge/censorship_twitter_is_blocking_tweets_with/

>>7455 Nice non sequitor. Twitter is a private corporation, they can censor anything they feel violates their terms of service. Where does "crime" come into it? It doesn't.
Crash Override · 2018-03-28 06:46
>>7460 >it's a private corporation they can do whatever they want! Except big tech has monopolised 99% of all communication through a certain medium, and this medium is so important that everything is done through it. And it's not like you can start a competitor, people who want to start competitors can't even gather up 1/5 the infrastructure of big tech, and without infrastructure it's impossible to compete against them. Imagine if Facebook privatised all of FM radio, and Google privatised all of AM radio. Radio would be exempt from free speech and they can push whatever they want through all the frequencies because IT'S A PRIVATE COMPANY. That's fine with you?
Zero Cool · 2018-03-28 13:29
>>7450 Until they start cracking down on anti-state posts. >>7472 This The argument doesn't work when there's monopolies. Twitter is still not too bad, but for example smartphones. It's sudo-mandatory to have a smartphone in this day and age, and if you want one you essentially have two choices on what software to run (I know there's alternatives out there but they're based on the existing OSs and don't have the money to compete in the same mainstream market, so they'll stay niche). Private companies have to be held to some standard when they become this big. Look at how many people complain about youtube, every youtuber fuarrrking hates the platform but there's no other viable option because google is the only thing big enough to run a video platform of that scale. If a competitor comes along (facebook and twitch[amazon] are the main ones), they're also gonna have the same problems. You can't just start a competitor because the amount of resources you need at the beginning just cost too much.
Drano · 2018-03-29 14:10
>>7460 Is this the argument that will destroy net neutrality? "ISPs are private companies and they can censor any speech that breaks their terms of service"? Nice, real nice(You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

>>7441 Twitter is irrelevant
The Oracle · 2018-05-01 18:13
>>7454 >wish all the poster is saying is your post looks like automated spam. I've skimmed through that thread as well and only a small percentage of people are saying that. Has anyone actually tried confirming what OP is saying?
Cypher · 2018-05-02 16:03
Twitter is trash >>7472 If the right was technologically savvy they could deal with all these issues. This is a paraphrased quote from weev btw. I don't need to give you hosts and load balancers just because you can't run your own.
