This, really. A few people will leave, a few might even come here, but in the long run the userbase will stay the same. Now if he actually starts selling 4chan user data (without changing the privacy policy) it might be a different matter.

there's a guy in my steam friends list who keeps browsing 8chan and he's slowly turning into this bitter wannabe right-wing douchebag without realizing it. it's very painful to watch. by now, I'm just happy I was able to turn away from it.
I suppose I can simply continue to post on lainchan every now and then. lainchan users should consciously make sure to post calmly and sincerely so as to avoid turning this site into another hellhole.

Jim Watkins, the guy who owns 2ch right now (as well as 8ch), basically fired Hiroyuki because he was a data miner, and ran a paid service to delete "undesirable" posts from 2ch -- so e.g. the Japanese govt could get critical discussions censored if they paid up.
He's a scumbag of the worst kind. It's a sad, but appropriate ending for 4chan. It really is amazing how far that place has fallen in the last year and a half.

The deletion of content was mandated by the justice system which I surmise he has to do in lieu of paying boatloads of money in the lawsuit he lost.
None of this site's sources talk about selling data, that seems to be their own speculation on the link.

to be honest, I've been meaning to leave 4chan for awhile and spend more time here and on the other chans. For one, 4chan is a bit too cluttered and doesn't cater to as much of my own niche interests. Secondly, the less traffic, the less time I actually spend posting, which means I can multitask a little more easily.

that's the thing, people don't tolerate each other, they just branch off to more elitist brands until it's a dead tree of smaller and saller groups. also the whle userbase has been established by /v/ and /pol/

8ch anon here. What are your guys opinions on Jim Watkins and N.T. Technologies? I'm assuming from what I've read that lainchan is owned by some anon rather than a company which is a good thing.
It seems that everything is getting consolidated and Watkins military background kinda spooks me. My rationale there is due to Hiroyuki's data sales were going on during the time he was involved but he claims to be innocent in it all. It would not surprise me in the sleightest if Hiroyuki wanted to pull the same soykaf in a different country. Lord knows there are plenty of private and government entities that would be willing to pay for that access, he shouldn't have any trouble monetizing that soykaf .
That of course brings up the issues with Jim, in so that the guy could up and do the same soykaf to 8ch with no trouble whatsoever. As a commander in the US army he should have no trouble getting in contact with people who would want to buy that data either and do the same soykaf Hiroyuki did/does.
It didn't really bother me before when I had heard Jim was taking over soykaf simply because I didn't know enough about the 2channel situation overall, ignorance is bliss. But with the current state of things the consolidation of the two largest imageboards in the hands of two power players is a bit too much to bear.
Anyways, apologies for going on a full tinfoil thing here, I'm going to go back to lurking for a bit and kinda get a handle on what lainchan is all about. All of this just happens to have me rethinking my own personal security on devices and whatnot. I've decided I'll be browsing 8ch for the meanwhile still, but will stop posting unless it's absolutely dire, but I think I'll be making lainchan my new home for the meanwhile.

I know that not every board is dying/stormfrontified but the boards do seem susceptible to both. The site was popularized by this big /v/ exodus and by people worried about moot/mods selling out to SJW influences. This means the original settlers are people who have as many conspiracy theories as they have anger management issues.
8/pol/ users live in a torture chamber hugbox where they discuss their plans for social media brainwashing and sockpuppetry. Large boards can't shut up about SJWs.
There's a couple of boards that manage to escape this bull soykaf McCarthyist atmosphere but they are extremely niche and have pretty much formed their own subcultures.
Maybe Hiroyuki will screw up hard enough to cause another mass exodus. This time, people will care about privacy and data mining instead of just about being anti-SJW.

Anonymous · 2015-09-23 01:43
I came here to post that I left 4chan entirely as of the 20th when I heard the announcement of who took over as owner. It's a shame, I was active on that board since it's start and original exodus from Something Awful and really got involved around 2006 when /tg/ and some of the other fun creative boards got off the ground.
Anyway the constant raids made the site too high profile and over the years the userbase became much more... boring, less unique.
If anyone is familiar with the phrase "Eternal September" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September - that was around '08 for 4chan. Now they're owned by a dataminer.

My interest and usage of 4chan died down heavily after jewt incorporated recaptcha/passes years back. Then hiding sage, having a corrupt and unprofessional moderation team, and not allowing posts from VPN's was a good reason to jump ship too. >What's your problem with those?
Sage should be viewable to show you feel your post isn't important enough to bump the thread- it isn't always a bad thing. Passes mean having your credit card number and other personal information compromised like what happened a while back.

Sure 8ch gives you lots of freedom, but be honest, no one actually likes the drama that came from/come from inter-board raids and general spamming. The kind of moderation here is just a common sense type of feel, don't be rude and loud, not because you'll get derezzed for it, but because you're in a quiet place. As soon as you start getting really specific and looking for loopholes in rules, no one has any fun. The people on 8ch have the "free speech" card to play whenever moderation like this is enforced, which we don't have. This overall makes for a relaxing community where you can just discuss things without getting furious over nothing. I have no interest in cyber, anime, or programming, but I keep coming back to this site just for /r/.

>more people seem to like him than dislike him
That's because he's Japanese and they're idiots and all the smart people left. These people would worship a literal turd as long as it had "made in Japan" written on it.

I believe ye olde /g/ has been talking soykaf about duckduckgo for at least a year now but I don't remember why.

I think the owner of DDG had ties to some analytics company or something.
Anonymous · 2015-09-24 19:27

The guy running DDG sold user data at his previous business, so he's not really to be trusted.

I'm here because someone linked from /qa/, and so far I'm liking the atmosphere (and language enhancers ).
I'll probably still use my homeboard /tg/, because no admin will ever care about /tg/. It's neither as friendly nor as resourceful as it used to be, but it's a much better place to share and converse about my interests than reddit.

there's a writeup on the 8ch sticky about it with sourcing and documentation and stuff. It's basically as

He's right. Most of pretentious anarchist kiddo are not even anarchist. They are mostly bourgeois socialist, or any sort of left-wing authoritarian, thinking that they are fighting for liberty.

It depends. I can cut the guy some slack because he works a soykaf job and had an even more soykaf childhood.
STATUS UPDATE: As much as we shake our heads at the chest-pounding anger and tribalism so rampant on 8chan we can at least count on them to pay attention: Google is apparently getting involved in the social media tone policing war - presumably to push for more tight control so users will feel safer and more readily expose their info online.

Don't think lainchan won't do the same one day. Maybe it already has.

Here's a secret: There are more or less nonfat-soykaf drinker s and marketers posting depending on the time.
Sunday and thursday mornings around 10am-3pm GMT time are nice. Weekday mornings aside from monday and friday are okay. Saturdays are subjective by board; you may get lucky or syou might see the same twenty threads reposted.

Please elaborate. It seems pretty vital.
