introduction

Hi everybody this will be my first post on an actual forum. That's due to several reasons like not growing up in a tech savvy environment, hence, also not having anything to browse a forum or having someone who would teach me how to use them and access their machine. I was also pretty young when forums took off in early 2000's (I'm 18+ dw, although barely so). Apps like discord and newer reddit were easier to adopt because of their modern ui, Ive tried to use forums since last year but the classic menus seemed intimidating. But, here I am today after a few 16yr old videos on how to navigate forums, also practicing a little on the old reddit ui. As for how I ended up on this particular place, I found an Instagram reel with the song in lains opening. I loved it and eventually found the anime it was in. Though I still haven't watched it lol. Ive been a larper all my life, even before I got to know about the word. some of my hobbies are hiking, gaming, reading. I also like taking pictures in video games. o7 With all that said, Im pretty unfamiliar with the lingo you guys use, so please spare me if i ask about something in the future, looking forward to interacting more here! Attachments contain minor spoilers for the video game 'Death Stranding 2'

>>48927 hey man this isn't a forum, it's an anonymous imageboard- leave the name field unfilled. if you are interested in a forum I recommend something awful, the shroomery, kiwifarms. There you can cultivate a user reputation. Here we have no identity so you can't really "get to know" posters in the same way as on other sites. I recommend you go check out 4chan.org. And stay away from reddit. Reddit is for awful people.
Wintermute · 2026-05-02 13:20
>>48928 You disavow reddit, but still type like a redditor
Haruyoshi · 2026-05-02 14:24
Hey there! Welcome to imageboards! I'm impressed you find this place before 4chan. :) You can click on the numbers above a post to mention/reply to a person. and if you are quoting a person, you can use the > symbol, at the start of a line, to do so. There's also a word filter on this site. Don't be alarmed if some words change after posting. There's always ways around it if you are really adamant on keeping your words true. here's an example! : >>48928 >I recommend you go check out 4chan.org. And stay away from reddit. Reddit is for awful people. what are you, a glitterboy? (glitterboy = f4gg0t) Joke aside, yes this place is an imageboard. Different culture overall and posting habits. No need for an account, so you may leave the name, email and subject empty. pic rel. check out a linux distribution. like linux mint :3 if you got questions about the site in general, check out lainchan's IRC server, or the /q/ board. (you can access it from the banner at the top of the site, or by modifying the URL in your browser.) nice death stranding pic, lain!

>>48930 I wouldn't know. I'm an old user (2007 era 4chins) and every time i've looked at reddit i've cringed and/or gotten so upset that my forehead vein bulged. I've heard that before though. I don't see how spacing out your lines has anything to do with reddit but I don't really care
Terzibashjian · 2026-05-02 16:44
>>48933 this is a genuine question, why does reddit piss you off so much?
fsociety · 2026-05-02 16:51
It's amusing how morons who want to turn this site into a 4chan wannabe are triggered by a bit of spacing.
Armitage · 2026-05-02 18:32
>>48936 for the same reason xkcd does. It's trite, holier-than-thou joyless baloney injected with the most arrogant userbase on the internet- people who are high on the smell of their own farts did-you-knowing and yes-anding everyone else into friggin oblivion. plus if you say nigger they'll shadow ban you which is like banning you except they don't even tell you you're derezzed, but almost nobody will see your posts. i'm a fan of people who aren't defending an ego, of people who speak freely, of people who wear their heart on their sleeve, and people who are a little twisted and okay with expressing it. that's why I like image boards
Drifter · 2026-05-02 19:31
>>48939 >i'm a fan of people who aren't defending an ego, of people who speak freely, of people who wear their heart on their sleeve, and people who are a little twisted and okay with expressing it. Except when they say something that goes against your beliefs or behave in a way you don't like. >plus if you say nigger they'll shadow ban you which is like banning you except they don't even tell you you're derezzed, but almost nobody will see your posts. So basically you're butthurt because these bastards derezzed you or whatever. I don't know why the need to hide it behind a mask that pretends to look cool.
Dozer · 2026-05-02 19:48
>>48939 it's people like you who soykaf it up constantly with the kvetching over things like spacing. get over yourself or at least shut the fuarrrk up until you learn to hold your tongue on such frivolous bs.
John Rain · 2026-05-02 20:21
>>48927 Well, for what it's worth welcome to the "real" internet, OP. Unoriginal as it seems, I'd also like to offer the same advice as some other users: Go to 4chan as well. It's admittedly retard central but it's mostly genuine conversation and it's one of the few "mainstream" sites where people do seriously express themselves. I'll also tell you what every n00b should know, and should do, and introduce the concept of lurking: visiting a website without posting or taking an active part in the discussion, merely observing and learning. It's an essential way of learning proper netiquette and the posting style, lingo, and general attitude of a particular site - especially if you even like the site in the first place. Alot of web users, especially those coming right off social media, just jump right into sites they don't understand and soykaf the place up. It used to be considered common courtesy to lurk before posting, and it should still be done especially when visiting less mainstream communities, like this one. I would recommend lurking on this website for a few weeks before taking an active part in discussions. >TL:DR lurk moar
Zhora · 2026-05-02 21:30
>>48941 I was this anon. >>48928 >>48940 no because the majority of people on 4chan say stuff I don't like they just don't say it like a fuarrrkin queer
Nameless · 2026-05-02 22:04
>>48943 So, you're not such a fan of people who speak their minds as you claim to be. Are you always this contradictory or does being triggered by spaces make you more incongruous?
Hitomi · 2026-05-03 06:47
>>48944 what are you on about retard-sama?
藤原純一 · 2026-05-03 07:26
>>48945 I enjoy finding interesting people. Sadly you're not one of them, just the average web consumer.
Guthrie · 2026-05-03 07:41
>>48946 You're looking for reddit. Got lots of your type over there.
Zero Cool · 2026-05-03 08:03
>>48944 NTA. You brought up "Except when they say something that goes against your beliefs" in the first place for absolutely no reason. There was no argument until you made this statement, which is presumptuous, accusative, and ultimately irrelevant.
Guthrie · 2026-05-03 08:04
>>48947 Are you still triggered by spaces? Get over it already.
Project 2501 · 2026-05-03 08:12
>>48948 Finally, someone who knows how to actually use their brains and bring genuine arguments. I just wanna piss off idiots who have unresolved psychological issues with Reddit. It's interesting to see how many times they can repeat the same thing until they believe they "won" something.
Dr. X · 2026-05-03 08:15
>>48928 >I recommend you go check out 4chan.org. >I recommend something awful [..] kiwifarms. I don't recommend either of these places unless you really want to be a miserable human being in general. I'm not really joking here either. No one is better off for visiting these sites
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2026-05-03 08:33
>>48951 Unfortunately, for some reason they are starting to migrate here. Maybe they were derezzed because even in those dumpsters they found these guys annoying.
Drano · 2026-05-03 14:54
>>48936 ntl, but I don't like reddit because the format of engagement doesn't seem to be good for the people who use it for extended periods of time. There's a sense of cargo cult about them and lack of awareness or priority for niche things, it generally feels like the post format pushes a kind of recession to the mean as users basically compete to say the most popular thing. The anime they like is slop, if they like anything at all, and for anything that is remotely subjective there's a kind of lifeless immaturity about the place. In some it's not as bad and knowledge can be endearing especially if they have other characteristics going for them, but I think the worst part is redditors who use other sites but engage with them in fundamentally the same way they would with reddit. You see, in the mid 2010s reddit instituted a massive cultural shift when some of the site's moderation grew uncomfortable and disgusted with some of its userbase. These users can be best characterized by the neckbearded animals who rioted in fast food restaurants over the availability of a promotional sauce for the rick and morty cartoon. Many, especially those with right wing leanings were driven off the site. Whether this was bad or good for reddit I cannot say, I also cannot say that I care. My issue is that these users went en masse to other sites and brought their culture with them, without respecting the culture that existed previously on those boards. They became a serious problem due in part to their lack of understanding, but also due to their lack of real interest in media, especially anime. You see, these were the exact users who were behind "gamergate" which was a political reaction to videogames largely manufactured by "gamers" - people who based their identity around playing AAA games and not thinking about other subjects like history or art very often. Gamergaters did not care for other subjects, and did not understand why the way they posted and used the internet was harmful. What's more, they carried a vendetta with them about being derezzed from reddit, so they by and large tried to enforce their will on other communities they went to. They treated imageboards as "free speech zones" where they were basically allowed to say whatever they want, and due to their victim complex they could not imagine that the way they were posting was harmful. They did not operate with respect for the cultures that they replaced. The ones who realized that it was not good did not truly understand *why* it was not good, so they tried to superficially hide their posting style through the same cargo cultish thinking that they had internalized through reddit. And that is why we have users who sound reddit, in spite of claiming to hate the place. After ten long years of cultural rape by these users, Elon Musk being the most blatant example, the harm caused by their community has seeped into every website. We have no choice but to live in the aftermath of what happened. >>48937 >Morons who want to turn this site into a 4chan wannabe It's true. Lainchan and 4chan are not, and never have been, the same sort of community. There is sometimes however, a particularly insufferable tone about when you reddit-space every single post with double or even triple spaces just to own the 4channers. It can undermine discussion quality because it distracts from the subject and has a low information density in general. I don't know if it's you doing this or someone else, but it is annoying.

>>48956 Don't you know? Writing several methhead paragraphs about soykaf nobody cares about is simply what we do around here
Naomi Nascimento · 2026-05-03 15:26
>>48955 Don't worry, I did read your text. I like you because you're actually justifying your way of thinking. Yet... >It can undermine discussion quality because it distracts from the subject and has a low information density in general. Sorry to tell you this, but that's just ridiculous. Do you know what is the smartest and most effective way to humiliate a troll? Ignoring them. But if people who hate Reddit for some reason I don't care to understand fall for such a cheap trick, then whose fault is it that the quality of the discussion drops and ends up degenerating into a pseudo-debate about 4chan vs Reddit? Don't blame me or others for the fact that users prefer to throw more fuel on the fire rather than talk seriously. I'm going to give you some heartfelt advice: You can't control how the community acts, especially in a place like this. Instead, focus on interacting with people you can connect with and ignore those you dislike. Otherwise you're just going to give them more power. Think about it.
藤原純一 · 2026-05-03 15:38
>>48958 Your post reminds me of chatgpt for some reason. I think it's the structure. transformers are known to use the quote followed by a dramatic turn, and the phrasing of >Sorry to tell you this, but that's just ridiculous Comes across as extremely formulaic. It might not be written by a transformer, but if you interact with them a lot then you should be careful to not reproduce the writing cliches they use in your own writing. Anyways. >who's fault is it if the discussion drops? Both, it's both people's fault. You have a responsibility not to post bait just as much as I have a responsibility to reply to it. But it also depends on the conversation. Threads like this, on /r/, are basically like a lounge for chit chat where engaging in some banter is generally fine. This type of thread isn't particularly high quality, it is in fact amusingly bad and imo not really a problem unless the board becomes clogged with such threads or they replace more in depth discussion.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2026-05-03 16:18
>>48959 In /Ω I just said that assuming without evidence that someone is using a LLM to generate responses or accusing someone of being a bot without any proof whatsoever should already be considered a logical fallacy. And I'm not trying to be arrogant or an asshole, but you just proved my point. What on earth does my writing style have to do with what we're talking about or with the topic of the thread itself? Perhaps unintentionally you shifted the focus of the conversation to criticizing the wording of my response, and even though you later returned to what we were initially talking about I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe you had just called me a bot. What genuinely bothers me is that I like your answers, but if you start them by accusing me of being a LLM agent I will obviously lose the main focus of the conversation.
Neo · 2026-05-03 16:33
>>48960 your problem is assuming that people should care about logical fallacies solely over things like poetics and the elements of style. good, quality writing is not simply *correct* writing, and im not using the formulaicness of your prose to criticize your argument. I am merely suggesting that you write using fewer cliches and with more variety, whether it is gpt writing or not does ultimately not matter. its still not good, that's the point. but i suppose you're right, i don't need to use a meme topic like chatgpt to criticize especially when it may derail the conversation into yet another GPT discussion.. you could have just as easily accused me of being GPT for the lengthiness of my reply, but you didn't, so thanks for not reciprocating my hostility.
Hiro Protagonist · 2026-05-03 16:47
>>48960 Too retarded to write for yourself, bitch and moan about muh spaces. You're a treasure.
Agent Richard Gill · 2026-05-03 16:51
>>48961 >so thanks for not reciprocating my hostility Again and believe it or not I am having a good time talking with you, so I don't see the need to respond to you in a sardonic way or trying to make you angry. I like a person who makes me think about my answers and actually gets me to criticize myself. You know: what I could have communicated better or if what I published makes sense at all. >your problem is assuming that people should care about logical fallacies solely over things like poetics and the elements of style You're right. I'm a fan of linguistics and I tend to impose my expectations on others. I know it's wrong and I've tried to improve it. Also in your defense, since I am not a native speaker sometimes I find myself in the need to use a translator and that thing tends to write as it wants. You have put me in a good mood, thank you very much.
