Seeing a a lot of lament here and elsewhere on the wired about how great tech used to be, especially consumer electronics and entertainment. But there is little stopping you from just enjoying all of the things you used to enjoy in your golden-era of choice (80's, 90's, 00's, whatever).
Aside from the scarcity or inaccessibility of certain technology, you can absolutely live the way you used to live back then. I think the reason many people don't is because they don't actually like the old technology the way they sound like they do. They can't tolerate the slower tech, the letter-boxed movies, the old graphics.
Think about gaming. So many people whine about how great gaming used to be even though they never bother to play any of the old games. There are more than enough games in existence now that they would never run out of classic games to play, but they just don't want to play them.
Sure, we all have things about the world at large we wish were different and have no control over, but if we are talking about home entertainment there has literally never been a better time to access this stuff.
What does lainchan think about all this?

Ah but once you've tasted the delights of modern media it's nigh impossible to ever enjoy the old ways again. At least not like you used to.
I, and many others, do actually pretty much do live in the past and consume mostly old media, play old games, use old software, etc.
For example I have a stereo with AM/FM radio, a tape deck and a record player- I listen to casettes despite the fact I can look up the song and instantly play it in better quality- I do it because it's not all about the song, sometimes it's about the ritual. I have thousands of digital books- I can access pretty much any comic or graphic novel online for free- I still go to my local comic store and buy 50 cent comics and go home giddy to read them on my couch with my dogs.
I highly recommend living in the past. It's a lot of fun.

I would like to complement this by saying that people prefer to complain rather than finding solutions. Let's take another example: The Web. A lot of people enjoy repeating endlessly that "the internet is dead" and that "it's not the way it used to be." But that's just because it's easier to search for a video on YouTube and complain about how that mainstream platform is like kicking dead whales down the beach or lurking popular sites such as 4chan or Reddit and crying about how they are not the same anymore. But they don't bother in trying to leave their comfort zone so they can find a cool, niche forum that suits their hobbies and interests or even building a site using Neocities or Nekoweb which purpose is to bring that 'retro' look to websites (and I bet they already found reasons to complain about why not use those services either).
>So many people whine about how great gaming used to be even though they never bother to play any of the old games.
Just think about how many people say how awesome the original DOOM was, but how many people actually play it and not just talk about the "DOOM runs on any platform" meme. Not to mention games like Duke Nukem 3D or Heretic; no one talks about them, but it is easier to complain that the current games have no soul.
>but if we are talking about home entertainment there has literally never been a better time to access this stuff
Never better said. And also creating your own video game is easier than ever. If you don't like current games, just create your own; it's what I do.

I've finished the PSX Resident Evil 1 this month and I'm currently playing Metal Gear Solid 1 both for the first time, the average person doesn't like anything, they live by tendencies, but there are still people who enjoy the old stuff.

Like those YouTubers who only play trendy, modern stuff? Yeah, it's actually depressing. But I do know a pair of VTubers who do play retro games. And not only these popular NES titles that everybody knows, one of them was playing Duke Nukem, Parasite Eve and even obscure soykaf from the classic web era like I Wanna Be The Guy.

I do. I practically only play games from 00s to early 2010s. It's hard to find technology from then so the best I can do is emulate the aspects I like. My movie library is mostly 70s and 80s horror, some 90s and 00s underground films. If people like something then go for it, I genuinely am not interested in modern media a lot of the time so I naturally don't engage with it. I don't understand making something an aesthetic like that
