I haven't used an actual computer in years. I got a laptop, and it had windows 11 on it.... it's basically a panopticon of ai surveillance and is like kicking dead whales down the beach major ass. so i immediately installed Linux Mint Cinnamon. it 's sooooo much better. any of you use Linux? what distro? any tips ?
Agent Richard Gill · 2026-04-06 00:55
You got robbed of a hundred bucks. Ask the vendor for a computer without a preinstalled OS next time.
Roy Batty · 2026-04-07 19:25
Good, just don't try to dual boot, I've heard the new windows will now erase your linux partition just because.
Personally I'm really trying to like cosmic as a de since kde is gay and bloat and gnome is gay and keeps crashing.
Wayland and its consequences were a disaster for the linux ecosystem and was probably a big tech plant all along to d&c.

Often there's not even a price difference if you can select it to not have winzog preinstalled..

I'd assume pretty much everyone here uses/used some Linux or BSD distribution;
only because you can't connect to lainchan from TempleOS tho
>what distro?
Arch, NixOS, Void, Alpine, Ubuntu, OpenWrt, Android
that's the ones I'm using now, not counting previous systems
>any tips?
lurk moar
rtfm

Artix.

Windows can (and often will) erase or otherwise fuarrrk up your bootloader on updates. Ironically that sometimes means it locks you out of booting into windows.
You can dual boot, but use different drives for each OS.

I'm currently working with Debian, Void, OpenBSD and Proxmox.

just stay on mint for now and get your system running as you want it to. Mint is a good start

I wish. They went full rainbow, brown and pink stripes and all. Still doesn't seem to help them haha
But they are quite the nazis in how my multi monitor desktop coupling should be handled. And that's apparently in the dumbest way. It's another reason why the FOSS space is such a mess, way too many people who want to do things differently just for its sake, rather than just copying the actually good design decisions like how MacOS handles some things.
But in my experience KDE manages to restore itself when the display manager craps its pants. Unlike Gnome which literally just shows an "Ooopsie whoopsie :(", which is the wrong thing they copied from modern Windows.
Also what's up with neither being able to hibernate properly? Before Cosmic I would just let my machine run overnight instead and keep it on for months because of that. This wasn't always this bad on KDE or Gnome, even on brand new components.
Cosmic at least hybernates properly 9/10 times on my machine, unlike the 1/10 times on KDE or Gnome. Same machine! So you can't tell me I've just got faulty ram blocks! But all at the price of the pen not working..
Just is like kicking dead whales down the beach not everyone's got the time like Pewdiepie to rice they Hyprland all day. There's too many Wayland compatibility issues to resolve first just to have a halfway decent work setup while not just being some livestock for silicon valley.
FFs it's 2026 CURRENT YEAR, I don't even care about flying cars just let me pause my home pc goddamit!

>They went full rainbow, brown and pink stripes and all
sad but true, tho I don't care much, what I do care about is that they'd rather change icons for 5th time in a month than fix plasma fuarrrking dying after sleep
>rather than just copying the actually good design decisions like how MacOS handles some things
no.
would be true 10 years ago, now I hate when android apps copy this "liquid ass" design like you wouldn't believe
both UI and UX went soykaf in recent years, good thing Steve Jobs can't see this crap anymore
>But in my experience KDE manages to restore itself when the display manager craps its pants
what's wrong with display manager and how is this even related to KDE?
>Unlike Gnome which literally just shows an "Ooopsie whoopsie :("
never seen this myself but yeah that's believable
>Also what's up with neither being able to hibernate properly? Before Cosmic I would just let my machine run overnight instead and keep it on for months because of that
why not suspend to RAM (aka just sleep)?
>not everyone's got the time like Pewdiepie to rice they Hyprland all day
why would you configure it all day? default are sane, just drop a few key bindings, set keyboard/mouse settings and maybe change wallpaper/corners/colors/etc, literally "just works" compositor, setting it up is unironically faster than Plasma
>There's too many Wayland compatibility issues to resolve first just to have a halfway decent work setup while not just being some livestock for silicon valley
such as? I'm with nshittia gpu and plasma wayland works alright OOTB. gayland indeed has many issues but "compatibility" (with what exactly tho?) isn't one of them for at least a year already - in my experience, YMMV ofc

Use Debian.
Mint is for geriatrics afraid of getting familiar with Linux.

Can someone explain this to me , Just fuarrrk around with i3 , Void Musl and X11 this Wayland gayland hyperland fakemoomland is foreign to me

Mint is debian for people migrating from Windows. Mint is what Ubuntu should have been.

Ubuntu was great up to 9.10.
It was the perfectly balance of ease of use, efficient design and lack of bloat and speed.
That DE they've been using for the past some-odd years is what drove me away from the distro.
I've heard they have bumped up the requirements too, something like 6gb of ram being the minimal requirement.
My advice to anyone who wants a classic 00s style Linux experience is to go with Debian and use a DE like MATE or Xfce.
fsociety · 2026-04-13 02:33
I use Fedora + niri right now. Ive tried arch, manjaro, ubuntu, mint so far but Fedora is the best in my opinion. I tried hyprland for a bit and then I used gnome for a good 2 years but now im on niri and im loving it. scrolling window management is peak. id never use kde, looks ugly imoo

I'm using Debian for years now, it just works.
But Mint is basically Debian with some extras, like a GUI to install packages.. It's easy for people coming from Windows to migrate..
I'd agree in recommending Debian over Mint if he had asked what Distro to choose but he didn't, he's already on Mint.
I don't think we should make people that are new to linux immediately start to Distro-hop. just look at 4/g/s catalog, it's been a thing that people new to linux seem to do, and this for years, hopping distros without knowing what they are looking for, always thinking the grass might be greener on the other side.
It's Debian based, it works, when he's ready and has a more specific idea of what he wants out of his system, he can easily migrate to Debian.. that's all I'm saying.

Debian has the Synaptic Package Manager.
Mint is "fine" for a beginner's introduction to Linux but it shouldn't be their final destination.
I agree with the distro hopping sentiment though.
The thing about Debain vs Mint though is Mint is more like buying a prebuilt PC, whereas Debian is more like building your own.
Mint is tethered to its DE and built in tools, with Debian you get to decide exactly how to configure the experience.

Yes you can make Debian basically mint, it's a fork. Nice CRT and cat btw, comfy Pic you took for your initial post

I have a laptop with Windows 11 installed but I can't install any other OS, I don't know if this have something to do with the processor being snapdragon. The model is a Compaq 5110 and I fuarrrking hate it, I want to install any linux distro since last year but I can't, someone help me. Maybe its just me.

Arch is genuinely not a hard distro. Just install arch with kde, gnome, or cinnamon and try to rtfm
