I prefer to watch media from 1980's to around 2006 give or take. My question, however, is why? Maybe I just like the atmosphere but very rarely does modern media get it on the same level if ever.
Sorry if this is cringe but I really don't know a better community to discuss this with.

Different generations of media tend to focus on specific ideas. This doesn't mean those ideas don't exist in different eras, just that they aren't as popular.
Why don't you try taking one of your favourite pieces of media from your preferred age, isolating the elements that you enjoy the most, and finding something modern that contains the same elements?
I find most of the modern media I enjoy is not mainstream, yet the media I enjoy from the 80's and 90's was generally popular at the time.

I do prefer the anesthetics, seeing a CRT every now and then brings me joy. I also prefer the zeitgeist those movies are made in but that's probably nostalgia..
But I also have the feeling movies from that era feel more full, it's hard to describe but 2 hours of movie usually feel more like a entire experience, maybe it's more changing sets or it is that my monkeybrain filters out everything what isn't practical effects..
Examples:
>every given LOTR movie feels more substantial then every hobbit movie.
>bladerunner feels like an entire universe where bladerunner2049 (although a great movie too) feels like a small frame, a glimpse, out of a universe.
And don't get me started with anime, golden age stuff feels like a moving canvas where newer stuff feels like a bad animation movie in comparison..
But I genuinely don't know what of it is nostalgia and what is objectively better movie making. I'm just glad I have over 2, maybe 3 decades to pick from

I don’t buy into this idea that enjoying something from the past even when attributing certain qualities to that time frame is “nostalgia blinders”. I think that’s just a case of rhetorical logic making things impossible to believe in or people trying to sound smart. There are things within any given time frame from culture, history, technological innovations/limitations, and social development that factors into art and a sort of collective phenomenal social consensus (how people perceive and act within a point in history). Same thing applies to 80’s/90’s animation, there were certain technological limitations and trends in style that made that generalized style popular. That doesn’t mean there weren’t deviations, just that there was a popular aesthetic particular to the time people look back on and enjoy.

It’s crazy that some people don’t understand that.
One time I argued with someone that seemed to not understand what I meant when I brought up “early to mid 00s internet techno”, it was likely a zhoomer though.
And I agree with this sentiment, this is why I loved 00s cinema because it had a particular mood and atmosphere and culture.
I always looked at media as a snapshot of a period in time, not as disposable entertainment to be “consumed” and then discarded.
This goes much deeper than I want to right now but there are several factors for why modern media is so bad and getting worse, ultimately it’s up to people who understand and appreciate good aesthetics to take torch and become the creators of the modern age.

One of the things I've noticed is that older anime is more realistic. The faces were not optimized moe blobs. The movements were sometimes awkward because they held more strictly to real human figures and posture. The portrayals of masculinity and femininity were grounded in reality.
Now everything is a hundred incestuous iterations farther into the anime meta.

The lord of the rings movies were the dying breath of wholesome white anglo saxon protestant civilization
