For the past two or so weeks I have been reading news articles in the terminal while imagining it’s something from a video game.
The thing is, real life really is no different from Deus Ex now.

newsboat is awesome.
Agreed on the mood the terminal gives
William Holtzer · 2026-03-10 02:55
Didn't know newsboat was a thing , thanks lainon !

Heads-up: some sites will only show a snippet of an article, just edit your bashrc file (~/.bashrc) and add the following:
export BROWSER=lynx
Then save and in the terminal enter
source ~/.bashrc
So when you run into that you can just enter o and it’ll load the full article in the lynx text-based web browser.

ooo good idea and pleasing to read
Sabo Engle · 2026-06-15 10:26
desecrating your terminal like that is a big no-no buddy.
Hagbard Celine · 2026-06-15 10:57
the problem i have is that most news websites i know are dogshit.

News as we knew it is dead.
The kinds of RSS feeds you want to listen to are trusted bloggers and other less-newsy (think patch notes, updates, etc) stuff. It was twitter before twitter.

share some trusted bloggers?

I'm terribly sorry, but I don't have anything to share with you. Besides, who am I? Just because we're in the same vague social group of people of this site does not mean I could not just as well be some alphabet boy who wants to wage slave my agency´s latest propagandist.
fsociety · 2026-06-21 16:53
i hate to break it to you but the only source of news is x.com now. I used to read twitter sources with bitlbee in irssi but I don't think x supports third party oauth applications anymore.

i'd love to set up some niche OS on an ancient Thinkpad and use it just for reading news via newsboat and note taking in emacs. Life could be a dream.

i get a lot of news from:
[not the RSS link, but a page explaining their curated feeds [big variety]]
https://arstechnica.com/rss-feeds/
[science news]
https://physicsworld.com/feed
[climate science news]
https://insideclimatenews.org/feed/?content=icn-syndication-2021
[engineering/science news]
https://spectrum.ieee.org/customfeeds/feed/all-topics/rss
some of these involve sacrificing your larp a bit as only a preview of the article shows in the feed.

Thank you for the links, really appreciated.

I unironically used hacker news for a few years, and only that. I've abandoned it this year though, as it's now full of noise... I've not read or kept up with news since then. (not that HN was ever enough to actually be up to date, but it was enough for my needs)
I don't think I will get back to reading anything like that anymore. I lurk lobsters sometimes, but that's it.
