Which linux distro would lain use and why
Nameless · 2025-09-12 05:42
copland OS was named after an apple project of the same name :) so maybe freebsd
Special Agent Bob · 2025-09-12 16:01
Debian GNU/Hurd, to modify the kernel easily
The Plague · 2025-09-12 20:09
>>47181 She'd probably write her own kernel built on Mach 3. If she were using a linux distro that'd probably be Guix/Hurd.
Yu-ichi · 2025-09-13 04:51
nix cus every other "difficult" distro is for posers
Anonymous · 2025-09-13 06:55
>>47189 Please don't put a stain on a decent distro by making it sound like choosing a distro is a social matter instead of a purely technical one. You prolly judge programming languages based on who uses them as well instead of their qualities and technical concerns.
Morpheus · 2025-09-13 08:37
>>47189 Nix is not good in any way. The idea itself is conveluted. LFS, gentoo, Arch based distros, etc are the true linux experience.
Meddler · 2025-09-13 10:34
>>47191 It's nice to be able to switch any component of your system including kernel by slightly modifying config and automatically be able to rollback at any moment. It's nice to be able to copy your config to another machine and get the exact same system with zero effort.

plan9 (fuarrrk linux in this case) cause it allows one to connect easily
Gyula Kovacs · 2025-09-13 12:29
>>47192 I can definitely see why those ideas are interesting, but I don't like Nix's execution of them. Have you tried Guix? >>47193 Have you tried 9front? I heard it's like a fan sequel

Copland OS is named after a failed OS Apple was developing. In the anime, there's a lot of Mac OS X references (the fonts etc). She would use Mac OS.
The Oracle · 2025-09-14 09:14
>>47195 copland more like copeland! ................................................................................... right guys?
Hong, Guil Dong · 2025-09-15 05:12
>>47195 Not even you think this. Would've lain been lain if she had a modern macbook? No. We all know it. The average mac user's setup looks nothing like lain's, not even the "hackintosh people" come close.
Meddler · 2025-09-15 07:06
>>47191 Well, that's nonsense. The Nix/Guix concept is as close to actual technological superiority as we ever got with any Linux distribution. That being said, I use Artix, because it is something I am familiar with and what is good enough for me. The idea that anything Arch-based is in any way cool or "true Linux experience" is just some teenage hipster bullshit. Like any Linux variant, Arch and it's derivatives are just software collections that are organised and works in a way that some users appreciate, and one that many other would laugh at incessantly if anybody seriously proposed utilising it in their use case. The same goes for any other distribution. Gentoo is good if you are into custom compiling everything, LFS is good if you have some hyper specific expectations for your OS or you mostly use your PC recreationally, but in the end it is all a matter of taste. At this point I would assume that anybody using mainline Ubuntu does it for some valid reason, because it fell off so much behind it's competition in the "beginner" segment in recent years that it no longer is the default choice, not really. As for the OP question, Lain would obviously use Qubes OS if she could, because application virtualisation would serve as a great technological metaphor for the fragmentation of identity and dissociation of personality. >>47195 And if we want to get historically and thematically accurate, than I would said that in real world Lain would use early versions of Darwin, as it was a bridge between the hopeful promises of NeXT and the sad downward spiral of Apple Computer. >>47204 >Would've lain been lain if she had a modern macbook? No. We all know it. Right, but Lain's trajectrory clearly was from a teenage girl's iMac/Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh to a fantastical custom system, with a high-performance tower PC in between. So there were no MacBooks involved. We could easily imagine that the tower was a Power Mac stand-in or a hackintosh, though. >The average mac user's setup looks nothing like lain's, not even the "hackintosh people" come close. Lain is not an average anything and a technical user can do almost anything with MacOS presentation even now, not to mention a literal tech wizard with mostly open-sourced, BSD-derived OS X code back then.

>>47205 >teenage hipster bs No. It's a fact. Arch and others are very raw compared to Nix that tries to reinvent the wheel and builds a gazilion things over pure Linux. You might disagree that it's bad, but it's a fact that pacman is very bare-bones compared to what Nix "adds" to Linux. >Lain is not an average anything She would be if all shr had was normal person mac crap unless you want to tell me she a born tech wizard, but then the OS doesn't really matter does it?
Liet Kynes · 2025-09-15 07:36
I'm using Nixos and its quite fun, can be a pain in the arse sometimes but for the most part it is something I can see becoming bigger than arch

>>47206 >Arch and others are very raw compared to Nix that tries to reinvent the wheel and builds a gazilion things over pure Linux. You might disagree that it's bad, but it's a fact that pacman is very bare-bones compared to what Nix "adds" to Linux. I don't disagree that The Arch WayTM is simpler in the engineering sense, I disagree that it is some kind of universal quality indicator. Nix system is a complex thing, but it is so for a reason and much of the design overhead comes from the necessity to be compatible with regular Linux software. But the added functionality doesn't make it some kind of magic bullet, nor the cleaner design makes Arch one. And if we would want value simplicity and "unixness" over everything, than we probably should talk about Slackware instead, as it at least existed in the period during which SEL is implied to take place. >She would be if all shr had was normal person mac crap unless you want to tell me she a born tech wizard, but then the OS doesn't really matter does it? Well, isn't at least one of the leading interpretations of the series that she was, in fact, a born tech wizard? And you can't convince me that there were no people whose first exposure to computers was from classic MacOS or early OS X that went on to be a highly qualified professionals in several computing fields. I don't know, I imagine that it might be different in US, but where I come form modern MacOS is basically the Tech Bro OS - good enough to be used professionally in IT, easy enough for the lazy and the braindead. But it probably wasn't the case with early OS X, which despite it's relative corporate polish in comparison to Linux was still quite hacky under the hood.

>>47208 only mac users i know in tech are data scientists. python (ml) are mostly linux while corpo codemonkeys sit on windows as they target windows consumers.

>>47207 My quip with NixOS comes from the fact that even though it has configuration reproducibility, the packages themselves are not binary reproducible. You can't be sure that the binary you got doesn't have a backdoor.
