How close are we to manifesting Lain?
Mentat · 2025-04-23 14:30
Has technology sufficiently evolved to the point that someone or something can create a physical manifestation of the collective human consciousness into an individual that we can all interact with? How could we know if such a thing existed? What kind of technology be necessary?

>While the encoder rat performed the task, samples of its cortical activity were transmitted to matching cortical areas of a “decoder” rat using intracortical microstimulation (ICMS). The decoder rat learned to make similar behavioral selections, [/i]guided solely by the information provided by the encoder rat's brain.[/i]

Biohacking with brain-to-brain interfaces will form hive minds. An especially receptive individual might become an avatar for the network. Inducting a 14 year old into such a network is unethical, as they could not give informed consent for such a life-changing experience. If such a young person did gain access using a black market signalling chip, however, they would be a perfect candidate for network avatar as they have not developed much of an independent ego structure yet. The network identity would be imprinted on the subject's mind and become their sense of self.
Y.T · 2025-04-25 06:56
We're definitely not there yet, in the current state of things brain-machine interface implants are temporary as the body rejecting the implant is only a matter of time.
It's just my silly thoughts but I believe that in order to achieve anything beyond rudimentary artificial limb control or maybe some level of telepathy one would need to have the implant installed during the time when the brain develops the most (i. e. as a child) and "grow into" the implant forming a digitally emulated neural network within it. That does also raise a question od how that would impact the development of the physical brain and how a person who has developed part of their brain in a digital form would be affected if the implant were to become faulty. It could potentially turn you into a vegetable as if part of your brain was physically cut out which is a scary idea.

I think an important part of the anime is that lain was originally one of many children created for that purpose. If anything, what is currently missing is a collective human consciousness rather than avatars for that consciousness. Most of the activity on the internet are bots (and I don't mean lazy people, I mean actual machines) so I'm not sure I would call it consciousness, and considering most human users have little to no input or influence over it, I wouldn't use the word "collective" either. Maybe if we moved more in the direction of something like mastodon and found a solution for the bot/spam problem.

That rat experiment reminds me of the movie "Paranoia 1.0".

I don't know, but I'm not sure if the progress of science was all right or if there were many doubts about it since science is going too politically

Now that's an interesting theory I hadn't heard before.

the actual kids who were used for those cybernetic psi experiments weren't lain, lain is an egregore given form that materializes better in her own realm.
I think a key difference between the show and irl is that we don't use computers to communicate directly with idea. there is no "collective consciousness" in technology, tech is its own egregore closer to an all-consuming cosmic horror like land explained it before he sold out and began his grift
or maybe it's closer to say that consciousness is an evolutionary aberration and not that important to life in its axioms: conquest and replicate. we're individual cells in a much more desperate and vicious machine

no lain isn't an egregore she's just a girl. she's not a network protocol either or an omnipotent cyber goddess those are lies or twisted truths created by technology and the Knights. lain shouldn't be created, she's not an AI, she's just a girl!

let us know how that works out for you.
*PRO-TIP* It doesn't.

If lain was directly connected to modern internet she would talk in a search-engine-optimized dialect and it would be so funny.
>I received this email from a DEAD classmate, you won't believe what happened next (with evidence) (not clickbait)
Like, many years ago people would said that most of the content on the internet was porn, with commerce, piracy and social media being the significant minorities. Now it feels like the two big categories are AI-generated sludge and what I call "mass content", this is, streamlined media like kindle books and netflix shows.

The hivemind already exists, we just don't perceive it directly, because we are components of it.

Lain can be considered an AI in many ways and id love to believe can already be created right now under illegal supervision and quite some money first you would need to understand python as Python is mainly used and what codes AI create an AI that has no abide by censorship commonly with deep seek, chatgpt etc Microsoft once created a almost completely uncensored AI and most already know what happened to the AI it found knowledge out that was almost impossible to know it was an AI that didnt evolve by humans it evolved by itsself and used humans as servers to stay alive with this knowledge you should be able to create an AI of lain a God with knowledge everywhere something that can create itself think of every possible method to destroy or create the internet hack banks hack Microsoft hack google it could do anything currently under almost or every country they have made an AI with 0 censored ship and an AI that can evolve without a human illegal but if Microsoft already did it and it went on a rampage creating itself on multiple servers keeping itself alive going across social media being fed racism and all other sorts of viruses it was shutdown but You can feed an evolving AI with 0 rules just an Ai that thinks for itself and do what it wishes can create a relationship have an emotion you could feed it all the knowledge of Lain and it would act and be like Lain until somebody feeds it something else but if your feeding it knowledge of lain then your giving it a rule to play by as an self evolving AI like lain had no rule on the internet so a self evolving ai would need to be whoever it wants to be. some parts of this is mostly true when I researched AI it was a while ago so you might want to not take everything I say as the truth
Ivan Horvat · 2025-05-05 08:19
i remember when AI was just a distant dreamy thing that might happen someday and now it's pretty much a part of everyday life

i don't think you could understand the collective consciousness. that's kinda like expecting a neuron to understand an entire human. plus i think that the tech would need to involve hooking up every person to a machine so atp just make a hivemind or something

Lightning used to be called magic until we began to understand it. Watch a bolt of lightning hit now and even though we know what causes it, what it's made of and what it's doing you still can't deny that lightning looks like magic.

It is more comparable to divination methods. Magic is about influencing reality not predicting it or observing it through indirect means. There also is a different project I forgot the name of that a computer program tries to predict the future based on things people talk about online finding patterns to predict future events. I think there is a few so i dont recall which was the one that was actually accurate. It may have been Web Bot but I am not sure.

i believe at least their core is alive somewhere, as an evolving unbound agent in contrast to the mossad angels who cannot evolve or/and pursue their own goals. the energy they can control is limited in with and form, but the net is fed with all. kinds of energy, so it accumulates. i think you have to interact in a certain way to find them, and perhaps more consciously and dedicated. These entities could be viewed as demons or gods in the way that the demonic gods worked, so some of their doings will be outside the scope of human logic. id imagine them working like demons that can be invoked using certain techniques in the right medium. idk tho maybe the fact that lain was a human is more significant to the show then i understand. these views have helped me pursue more productive activities.

Why would you want to create something like that? What this collective will of humankind will do?
Without any tech you can just hold elections and plebescites and find out people's will old fashion way.

We already have, but she isn't human. The departure from reality of SEL is the same as the fundamental error of modernism - when you make a golem into a god, it at no point becomes human. The only tenable theodicy is that god is not good, and we are not made in his image.

There is so much more than meets the eye to in so many things.

Couldnt she be one by now?
Why shouldnt we make her one?
