Modern day eremitism.

The Hermit · 2025-04-22 02:06
My dream life is living in a single room apartment with no friends and no lover, completely celibate, never leaving the house and having no internet connection. I want three things: 1:Me 2:the wall 3:existence. How do I manage this kind of life without having to interact with anyone? I love to be alone, I want to be alone all the time. I love solitude, long stretches of silence and the occasional book. I have no aspirations and do not want status, I see them as pointless things that limit your freedom. I want to wake up, do nothing, be alone and then go to sleep. Just imagine the pure silence that would permeate everything. The never ending voice of solitude and peace... I want to be a hermit, it's the only way I can be happy. I need to find a way to make this an actual thing for me, but the problem is money. How do I find a way to finance such a life where I do not talk to anyone? Do I just have to give up on this dream? I dont care if I have to eat rice and beans every day for the rest of my life. I just want to exist and do nothing else.

Why an apartment? If you get a patch of land in the away from civilization you could have a small veggie farm and chickens.

join a sangha and become a monk

>>45477 >Oh it's awful that I must work and encounter people and pay for housing and food That's really rough buddy, we should have set aside special rules for sensitive souls like yourself

It's funny how every time I hear about such fantasies it's always without giving up living in a city. Eremitism is easy, in some parts of the world buying land and even housing in rural areas is very cheap, and you can live of cultivating crops. But you have to know how it is done, and you have to give up for real a comfortable and lazy way of life. You can live with little to no money, it's about commitment and real change of perspective in life.

>>45540 Considering OPs pic related I dont think thats what he's looking for. In any case that's not really a perfect solution as I see, either. Many places have property taxes that you'll still need to pay etc etc, very hard to just quit society. Maybe in the right country (if you can legally move there without employment and with explicit plans to not be economically productive in any way). Of course not everything must always be done legally. Perhaps look into becoming some eccentric's garden hermit

Find a way to get to Supermax prison. Sadly they allow you 1 hour of activity outside each day, so that might be too freeing for you.

>>45477 There are still hermit monks who live in caves or cells and have very little contact with the rest of the community. You would need to prove you are suited to this life before a monastery would support you though, so you'll probably have to work hard as a monk for some time. If you want to go completely alone with no support from a monastic community you'll have to find a source of remote income. Perhaps make things for sale on Etsy, do bug bounties, or get very good at crypto trading. Then live well below your means so you build up a buffer of savings to handle the volatility of that kind of work. If you're willing to give up the comfort of an apartment, then you could try wilderness living, but that's a much harder life and requires a broader set of skills. Also many places have legal restrictions on wild camping, campfires and primitive hunting, so you need to do your research first and find a place where you won't be constantly harassed by park rangers.

>>45598 in the US you can pretty much just live on blm land
Y.T · 2025-04-23 13:03
Same lainon, same. Except I'm a pussy and am scared of completely abandonning my current life. Rather than wanting to be alone, I don't want "responsibilities". Getting up for work is easy enough, but keeping promises, replying to mail, or otherwise communicating is stressful and I keep failing. I wish I could spend months without giving signs of life without people coming to bother me. Problem is, without money the state will come to bother me, getting a salary means having a boss to answer to, and selling goods or services means having clients to keep up with.

>>45540 There is no library in the wilderness so I have to reside in cities to be able to expand my knowledge
Netrunner · 2025-04-23 13:18
>>45604 >There is no library in the wilderness Make one. Buy your own books and start your own library
Masami Eiri · 2025-04-23 13:27
>>45606 Well I'm not gonna make much if any money if I live far away, so buying books is probably gonna be expensive since most of the books I buy are autist ones that are pretty expensive often.
Acid Burn · 2025-04-23 14:41
You can access the Internet in bumfuck nowhere and it will be much cheaper than buying books. You can make a library.
Random · 2025-04-23 20:24
>>45604 That is just an excuse, you can literally download any book in existence from z-library or eMule and fill any ebook reader with more books that any human can read in a lifetime. Besides rural areas are not necessarily "wilderness". I live in one and guess what any online shop delivers anything I wish in a few days. Cities are useless nowadays if you don't seek social interaction or lazy food delivery at home.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2025-04-23 22:32
>>45618 >That is just an excuse, you can literally download any book in existence this is so obviously not true even before you deal with the fact that many of those books you can download are only available in poor quality+high res scans that make them difficult to read and interact with on those ereaders. these sites are great but they're far from comprehensive
Eldon Tyrell · 2025-04-23 22:48
>>45477 I can barely handle the loneliness of being an agoraphobic NEET. I’d probably go insane if I didn’t have the internet, music and books to keep my mind occupied from the void.
Incognito · 2025-04-24 14:24
>>45622 Because I believe knowledge has a value of its own, that transcends the instrumental value (say how Orthodox Jews, uniquely, think wisdom is good on its own term). But it also helps me understand myself, my own isolation, etc. And it's a fun way to pass time :-)
Lunch · 2025-04-24 20:46
>>45637 well knowledge is everywhere there is more truth in the layout of the grass in my backyard than there is in any book and to accurately describe it all would take a library larger than the largest made if mere knowledge for knowledge's sake is what you seek then you can go literally anywhere and find it then
Morpheus · 2025-04-25 15:14
>>45649 Our immediate sensations can only be systematised and become true 'knowledge' through study that require books to make sense of them and evaluate them

>Modern day eremitism. >2:the wall bruh I'm a little high and floozy it said modern day "extremism" and was like dis my type of thread but... >My dream life is living in a single room apartment with no friends and no lover, completely celibate, never leaving the house and having no internet connection. You having no internet connection lol yeah like that real >How do I find a way to finance such a life where I do not talk to anyone? nocap become homeless noone wants to talk to them and lots of time they live by themself
Rick Deckard · 2025-04-25 17:58
>>45691 I can just make up soykaf and write books full of it though if it is possible for a book to be accurately based on reality then sensation gives insight into reality and is probably more dependably true than random books about topics about which you know so little that you cannot evaluate what seems reasonable or unreasonable

>>45540 >Eremitism is easy, in some parts of the world buying land and even housing in rural areas is very cheap, and you can live of cultivating crops Not everyone is born in one of those countries. If you're in an expensive city-state like singapore, or a desert country, then what?
