Paranoia about facial recognition
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2025-04-18 05:07
Something that terrifies me is that a load of cringe dating selfies and college pics from the MySpace days have been scraped and archived somewhere and that people can perform a face recognition search on me and find dodgy dorm pics from the mid 2000s. I know this isn’t likely but is it likely they’ll come back to haunt me?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

Honestly? By now it’s probably been bulldozed and forgotten about. If those images of you playing naked beer pong with random chicks are still lingering around they’re probably hard to even find since noones looking for them. Hence the Streisand effect

Just grow a beard and shave it every few weeks into some different style of facial hair. Or if you're feeling bold, make some latex props to give you a bigger nose/scars/etc.
XERXES · 2025-04-18 12:26
You forgot what mgs2 said about the irrelevant flood junk data. All that stuff is going to be lost in a sea of equally worthless data.
Yet Another Lainon · 2025-04-18 14:14
This bothers me too. I have been thinking what if there was a program to only slightly edit your image to make you look like someone who looks like you enough that a person would not think you're being deceptive if they saw you in real life but to a facial recognition program it would not recognize it is you. I'm talking not about masking it like Fawkes or Lowkey but also changing the features slightly especially fingerprints in photos and iris patterns and pore and vein patterns if high resolution photos.

>Just grow a beard and shave it every few weeks into some different style of facial hair
Pretty sure they have models that can ID even w/ facemask now- a beard won't do much.
>I have been thinking what if there was a program to only slightly edit your image to make you look like someone who looks like you
Unless the change was consistent across all images, any face-rec model should still grab your face as being the mean of the images.
>fingerprints in photos and iris patterns and pore and vein patterns
Pretty sure no model uses that sort of info- none of them are trained on super-high-res images.

Flooding only works against limited-throughput. The whole point of face-rec AI is effectively infinite-throughput. You can still "hide" by being nobody worth bothering, but that is very different from your images not being discovered+indexed.
Also, IIRC we have a few threads on face-rec already, so please go check those.

Forgot to mention, there are gen-AI tools for poisoning pictures against recognition/classification, but these are very much an arms-race scenario and not a long-term solution, e.g: Nightshade (https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/whatis.html)

And they don't work that well.

You made a mistake asking this question on a cyberpunk board lmao. Facial recognition is being derezzed big time and honestly this kind of obscure data gets trashed as soon as search engines forget it or no one wants to pay to host that soykaf anymore

Too bad there isn't an easy way to know where the databases are stored exactly to be able to just destroy the servers without destroying something completely unrelated.

Considering how many high profile gov agents are probably equally scared of this soykaf I think digital cleanups should get easier

no, nobody cares anymore that you partied a little in college. camera quality in the mid 2000s usually sucked so they're less likely to turn up in such a search. it's more likely to give a false positive with a camwhore that looks like you

What about cringe dating profile selfies. They’re probably even worse

I suppose this has some truth. On one hand the FBI loves security holes the NSA wants everyone in the US to be completely protected even though they also spy on them which is a weird contradiction.

They want the monopoly on facial recognition software for investigation purposes. There’s also the issue of stalking/doxxing/abuse of minors. Facial recognition software is being pretty heavily privatised for good reason

There also is the issue with body scanners are airports literally having nudes of everyone who goes through being stored. They do censor out faces if I recall right but I am sure there is a way to bypass that and certain body markings also can identify people. It's a type of surveillance system in itself.

Good job servers get wiped and repurposed regularly then. I work for a hosting company and that soykafs expensive

What a blatant lie. They have entire databases full of pictures of your face, and AI is at the point they can recognize someone merely by the way they walk.

for law enforcement maybe but its highly illegal to publically host private data. There are cybersecurity officers working around the clock to avoid sensitive information being leaked.

anything you posted online ceases to be private by the act of posting it.
that aside nobody gives a soykaf about legality.
Illegal for big corps means worst case paying a fine, its just a business expense.
Dozer · 2025-04-22 04:10
Lol facial recognition is just the start. Cops use gait recognition now, sometimes on protestors
