Keeper of the timeline here. As the only other imageboard worth using, I think Lainchan should be first to get the final one. I'll miss that 4-leaf clover tab in ways no normal human being can understand. May Yotsuba feast on tendies in Elysium forever.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

>>44746 4chan is coming back, it's only a matter of time. The website is down because they have to write new code to fix the exploit responsible for this mess, I estimate weeks (probably) to maybe a couple months (doubtful) at most. This hack really forced the developers to do their fuarrrking job, so now they have work to do. If they don't fix anything and put 4chan online again, then it's just going to happen again, and there will be more chaos. But if it doesn't come back online, like the devs just give up and let it die, where will they all go? Reddit? lainchan? Maybe. Maybe someone will take up the responsibility to make a new website like 4chan, and then they will go to that place. I hope it comes back. When I think of this, I think of lainchan. The people here are different, and the quality of posts is much higher than 4chan, but this place is almost quiet like a ghost town. There is a fraction of a fraction of the amount of activity on lainchan than 4chan, it puts me off honestly, like no one is listening, and lack of activity is just boring.
Yuki Nagato · 2025-04-16 04:26
>>44759 One of the things that emerged from the code being leaked is that Hiroshimoot has done no maintenance since he bought the site. It was still running on code from 2016. Even if they do fix it the trust of users with more than 5 brain cells will be completely gone. The only people left will be the absolute dregs. If you're looking for an optimistic prediction, just remember Eternal September forced everyone to make their own blogs and forums. Total final death of 4chan will probably inspire the best anons to create something instead of hanging around in the ashes of their former glory.

Maybe, just maybe, the death of 4chan will bring the death of anonymous imageboards as a whole. The truth is that to users of 4chan what really matters is having a place of discussion that is active and scarcely moderated. Pseudonyms are good enough for anonimity's purposes, and they've been giving their email away for a while anyway. After all, what's the difference between answering to a twitter screen cap thread and posting on twitter directly? The generals will move to discord, where they can ban skizos and better cope with excessive offtopic brewing soykaf that has become a major problem. Then, there wouldn't be a new 4chan. Altchans would initially get a big boost in activity, but then they'd start to fizzle out. The truth is it's 4chan notoriety that drives new people into imageboards and it's the place where they find out altchans. Imageboards have long lost the claim of being the place where people can find OC, interesting discussion or witty banter online, so all that altchans can offer is a 4chan-lite experience with less toxicity. That has appeal to people burned out by 4chan, and little one else. It's only a matter of time until imageboards become a relic of the past, used only by a couple thousand enthusiasts worldwide, like gopher, and with a collective activity of less than 1 PPH

Apoc · 2025-04-16 07:57
>>44787 I think image boards still have a niche that other sites can't really fill which is being able to communicate not only through text but images and videos. It's a very simple format that's quick to use unlike traditional forums which were slow and clunky and required a ton of hoops to jump through just to use them. Websites like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, ect. are just terrible for having these long form discussions and don't really replace image boards. Discords are overly moderated and lack anonymity. I don't think anything will ever reach 4chan's popularity, but I'm certain an alternative website will fill the void. 8chan was semi successful as an alternative until they had their own drama so it shouldn't be too difficult for another successful image board to spring up if 4chan actually kicks the bucket.

In general, my 4chan usage has pretty much settled into just following a handful of niche interests that you could almost just turn into some RSS feed. >>44882 >yet webrings of blogs and private forums already offer this and you don't see nearly as much broad cultural impact come out of them Usernames probably have a lot to do with it, a lot of forums seem to become more about interpersonal stuff when people have recognizable names and can see each other's post history, and then you need to conduct yourself accordingly. Imageboards certainly have some recognizable posters as well, but most people are just an anonymous blob. There's probably been several times that two people are talking soykaf about each other in one thread, and at the same time they're both in another thread chatting or helping each other out with something but they have no idea

Given their use of the "parallel construction" method, I don't know, but anyway they had to build a compelling case with plausibility deniability built in as to how they actually got the information they revealed. They proceeded to make veiled threads "you know, your state has red flag laws" and so on, going so far as going to a location I'd photographed and taking their own picture of it. If it wasn't someone who knew me (implausible, but possible) then it was someone who had access to the IP, and therefore could narrow the search space considerably. Not sure, I have a few suspicions there. Either way it was a good proof of concept. And yeah, board culture is soykaf. Nothin' fun about it. Lot of post-irony, lot of self deprecation. Just garbage. But, assuming it will be down for long enough to finally put the thing out of its misery, I will most miss /lit/. The poetry threads in particular. It was quite literally the one and only place on the internet, including private discords (other than Frater Asemlen's server), where people wrote metrical poetry. The very last keepers of the flame, as it were. I would say that such people will find a new home somewhere else, but they were universally lazy schizos that learned poetry out of luck, boredom, or isolation, and held no particular desire to discuss the art or to contribute to its proliferation -- it was just another hobby to them. Nonetheless, given that /lit/ represented the very last bastion of "community" (if you could so ennoble it) among the very last remnants of the metrical poets, its loss represents the truly last death knell of canonical verse in the Anglophone world, and the final victory of free verse and nihilism over poetry.

>>44931 It depends: The sharty guy said he won't leak user data but i doubt he won't and 4chan is likely to be hacked again if it really gets up again in 3 weeks. Did you always had one ISP? Does your ISP give fixed IPs only? If yes to both, then whatever you do next (i.e. host a server or make posts) change your IP and maybe use something like Tor for good measure to not repeat the same mistake. The likely thing that is going to happen is that if whoever choses to do research on your persona and he has access to your IP info (like, say in the future you post on some forum and you are particularly bad, then that forum gets hacked and someone sees your IP connected with your account and he wants to doxx you), he's probably going to cross research with this leak first if user data gets leaked. Also please don't post those kind of memes, they're pretty annoying and pretty much no one likes them here.

It's just a guess because he did post a page with someone's IP info and a catalog of all his posts and his bans (what seemed to be a janitor moderation page) while he had access. But to reiterate he said he will not leak user data, so right now there's no data to be extracted by any users. I'm just saying that user data getting leaked is a possibility but that's true for any forum and imageboard you frequent. The anonymous thing is pretty much an illusion that stays up as long as a website is not pwned. >I will just not post again I would tell you not to post there just for the terrible quality so yeah, but also it's probably going to be pretty hot as a target in the future and i wouldn't trust their moderation since it also requires cloudflare + captcha + JS + cookies and no VPNs and Tor. If you look through the source code they also kept info on your OS and had flags to make someone "suspicious" based by their OS only. >>44941 that's probably your local computer DHCP server for your LAN, i'm talking about the public IP for your router. it's an info that can be found only by asking your ISP or searching "does <my ISP> give fixed or dynamic IPs" or going to ipinfo.io and looking up your ip every week or so and see if it changes.

>>44882 I think one of the reasons is that if you open an imageboard for the first time it might feel a bit jarring, replies are numbers in the post that link to another post instead of a neatly organized column and they all mix together, another thing is that all boards are separate and have wierd names like /qa/, /v/, /inter/ and whatever. Instead of having the content come to you thanks to the algorithm you have to manually search for your interests yourself. I remember for example when I started using imageboards as a teenager and it took me a little bit to understand how they worked, I also introduced 4ch to a lot of friends of mine and saw their reaction as well. This plus the stuff the other lainon said makes me think that it's very unlikely that imageboards will ever become the center of internet discussion ever again. Also the newer generations are ironically less tech/internet savy than people born only 20 years ago, I can't see a future for imageboards outside of being niche, even though it's even easier to use them instead of any other plqatform because there are litterelly no barriers for entry, the worst thing you might get is a waiting timer on your first post.

Hope you guys don't mind if I ramble here for a bit. I am a gen Zer who discovered 4chan way past its prime, but still used it extensively. Like I wasted an ungodly amount of my teenagehood on that website. I have this love/hate relationship for it that I've been struggling with for a long time. Before using 4chan, I was more of a normal person. I mean I guess I've always had the nerd/geek personality, so I had the "4chan personality type", but when I was younger I felt a little more in-tune with the mainstream and with my generation. Like the websites I used to use when I was younger were Vine, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Then I discovered 4chan when I was in high school and I started feeling more and more like an outcast. I generally agreed with the sentiment popular on 4chan that the old internet was better, that traditional forums are better than Reddit or social media, and I still kind of agree with it now, but because of that I basically stopped using the mainstream social media websites, which made me feel even more disconnected from my generation. To anyone who's older than me, you gotta understand that for us gen Zs, the internet is practically inseparable from real life (yes yes I know, this isn't a good thing, and also Lain predicted this), so not being on the big social networks got me a lot of odd stares. But of course, feeling like an outcast was part and parcel of being a 4chan user, so for a while I kinda just embraced it. I've surfed the web and stumbled upon countless of small communities and forums more than I think anyone my age has, and that's all been really cool, but I've never been able to shake-off this feeling that maybe it would've been better if I'd never ventured into the outsider internet, that I'd be far happier now if I just stayed in the normal person-sphere. These past two days with 4chan being down has made me really consider these thoughts. I feel like I'm way too emotionally attached to 4chan and to the outsider section of the internet as a whole, like to an unhealthy degree. It's got me thinking that maybe I should just take this as a sign that I should move on from 4chan, forums, imageboards, etc. and just give in and re-join the normal person internet, and basically try to become a normal person myself. But then I think about all the time I wasted on the outsider internet, and I think, was that all for nothing then? Like what did I even gain from that? Did I gain anything? I left the normal person-sphere, slightly ruining my teenage years in the process, and now I'm just going to come crawling back?

>>44988 1) You would be surprised at how much people as young as you are here (i'm one), so stop generalizing by generations ("For us genZ"), because it's immensely stupid and us being close in age does not make us similar or connect us to some even more stupid stereotype. Feeling an outcast also greatly depends on your real life surroundings. This infighting between young and old and feeling inferior because you are not "old enough" is only a thing in 4chan as most things that are born out of resentment in the internet and then were exported to social media. Personally i find the generation label thing to be a sign of great mediocrity whenever someone uses it. 2) You were basically still using social media by using 4chan. It's the closest thing to social media the internet has outside of the corporate bubble. As for why are you even here, i personally have my interests and beliefs and i find that many people here share most of those with me or at least the general attitude. You see, that's the difference with this or any other imageboard and that crap. Most people go on that crap because they want the quick dopamine and the soykafpost fix. So now they feel completely clueless, because guess what, the internet isn't for most people. I'm saying this in good faith, but if you can't even think of ONE reason not to go in the corporate ecosystem then you pretty much never even scratched the surface of the "outsider internet" as you call it. Someone here used to say that before posting on the internet you should make actual real life experiences or do real life things to be able to share something worthwile. I think he was right on that.

For the thread watcher and "(You)" to work, the extension keeps a list of the threads you've posted in inside your browser in a cookie-like object called localStorage. Before moot left, that's all TW was used for; when you made a post the server only checked your IP address against the ban list's IPs and you saw the B& message if it matched. After Hiro took over, the backend checked both the IP and the TW post list against the ban list's post numbers so changing your IP was not sufficient to evade a ban. However if you change your IP then post from another browser, that works. Fingerprinting is something different where a series of stable metrics on your browser and OS are collected and hashed fo form an ID. Extensions exist to fuzz this data which has led to a decline in fingerprinting's popularity.

4chan was what got me interested in technology. I ended up on /b/ maybe 14 years ago when I was still in high school because a friend in class told me about it. It had that "sekret club" kinda vibe for me; I knew about something other people didn't. It got me interested in everything related to computers: I saved up money to build my own (budget) gaming PC, I learned about torrents and could get all the music and movies I wouldn't otherwise be able to get, and I started to learn programming too. It kinda changed the course of my entire life. I probably had a similar Highschool experience to a lot of the people here. I had acne and braces and was kinda lanky. I wasn't exactly bullied but I didn't really have many friends. When I discovered 4chan it was like finding where all the outsiders were. That's kinda stupid now considering what 4chan became in the last decade but for those first couple years it did give me a place where I felt like I belonged. It introduced me to anime at large: Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Lain, et al. For better or worse 4chan made me who I am. I can't say I'm disappointed in how my life has turned out. I have a cushy programming job, a (internet) culture where I feel like I belong, and real-life people I've met because of shared interests. The site became gradually less interesting and consisted more of actually awful people and frogposters with nothing interesting to say. The popular boards became unusable and the taint spread its tendrils. Any board you went on there's someone ready to call you 5 different slurs applied randomly. I still visited the smaller boards (/p/ and /an/ were nice), but the site was definitely not getting any better. It feels like putting Old Yeller down...

>>45330 Relateable, but far more autistic. I went to 4chan ~2008 and was perplexed. Their way of speaking, their almost recursive self imitation. And I even wrote a post on /b/, like "I figured it out guys. People go to other places and are modified by the social feedback loops present. This becomes their sense of identity, and they tailor their output accordingly. Isn't that weird? Why do they do that?" To this day I basically see people as robots, golem. Though these days I deprive of even that, they're closer to stampeding herd animals. The ones who don't stampede are fake people, who still tie themselves to the herd. Absolutely repulsive. 4chan was something to be used. I consider them all as being there for me, and the whole site existing for me. That is the purpose of their activity. But to indirect with them directly, to get them to output anything valuable by direct means? Never. They will never do it. You have to prompt them indirectly, or more often, you have to take their garbage half formed output and synthesize something of value from it yourself. The value was never in them, it was in me. I don't know why I cannot stop hating them so much. Cannot truly deal with them coldly. I hate them, it is pure disgust, contempt, hot anger. An infinite wellspring of pure rage buried below the surface. There are very few posters and interactions on that site I genuinely appreciated. Though there were some.

Most boards I went to became unusable since COVID. Just spam spam spam spam spam. It was bad before but after COVID and the AI boom the whole site has been nothing but literal bots just spamming the catalog on every board, always in the same fashion, same type of posts, all getting bumped systematically over and over forever. It couldn't have been just one user, so it was either some really incessant raiding or more simply, bots. I couldn't even filter the image hashes any longer because bots would change the picture hashes every time. Moderators seemed to actively endorse and protect the bots/spammers because they'd ban you if you ever so mentioned the spam but they kept all the obvious spam threads up while they drowned everything else on the catalogs. I haven't posted any actual content on 4chan in years because I always felt I was just throwing my words into a machine learning playground. I just lurked and even that felt more and more depressing. Maybe it will come back up or maybe it won't but it's been completely utterly dead for years now, there's absolutely no difference. Did the doxx/source data give any insight about the botting that was going on? I'm curious about this. I'm sure that at least 70-80% of content was bots. Absolutely nothing looked organic. >>45574 Though slower chans are enjoyable in their own way, there is something very exhilarating about fast chans. That feeling of live event threads going so fast that thread bakers can't keep up. That excitement of hundreds of people reacting to the same thing. Even though it's shallow and milquetoast, I think a large imageboard like 4chan still has its place in the modern internet, and I hope they don't die.
Zero Cool · 2025-04-22 22:33
>>45576 Slower is better for actual discussion and chill vibes, so long as not too slow where it feels boring waiting weeks or months for any comment worth reading.
Cypher · 2025-04-23 06:11
>>45581 >Slower is better for actual discussion and chill vibes Yeah, but most don't really go to 4chan for discussions. It's mostly brewing soykaf galore outside of the generals with the occasional blink of lucidity and harmony. I'm an avid poster of /tv/ and /g/, sometimes /v/ and at the end of the day it's hard to have something to be proud of.
Roger Pollack · 2025-04-23 07:16
any idea where the /uhg/ guys went to? I just want my TZD content and most of the altchans are either complete reddit soykaf (8ch and derivatives) or chill and don't post about the issue like lainchan

>>45587 >Yeah, but most don't really go to 4chan for discussions. This sentiment is still a little wild to me. Like, I get it. I do. But having seen what even the larger hobby boards used to be before 4chan became leddit's dumpster, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to truly let get of my anger after reading a statement like this. There was a time where it actually was a place for discussions, for sharing information, for building up something fun and new with other. /tg/ used to be absolutely preem. /p/ actually taught me a ton. There was a time where /v/ was a haven for oc. God, even the original /r9k/ flood was wild and exhilarating. I have largely disengaged from it well before this death knell. Any return I had was more an addict still looking for some hit rather than anything truly rewarding. I am sure one could tell me about their cozy little corner that still existed in 2022 or 2018 that you remember fondly because you brewed some truly wondrous soykaf in a rare convergence of harmony. But the attitude that 4chan was built for brewing soykaf is the sentiment that killed any value it ever had. And that attitude has been there for a long, long time. Good riddance.
Switch · 2025-04-23 14:28
Kind of ironic I'm finally getting ride of one of the only social account I had because I thought I could blend in more easily in the various general threads across 4chan boards and this happens a few week later. I must say the post quality was already abysmal 10 years ago but in retrospect it was nothing compared to what it actually became the last few years on some boards. Just a rancid torrent of pepejak, tranny/black/whatever brought up rent free and unorganic meme soup. I disagree about 4chan "not being for discussions", it just became incredibly harder to find them because the catalogue is filled with trash. Flooding templated junk from current_year chan culture starter pack vs talking about stuffs while leaving out some brain farts and random funny pics is not the same for me.

Their official statement about the hack: https://blog.4chan.org/post/781845918774394880/still-standing It's so funny that they are now LARPing as some always united and comfy community when their last blog post was 8 years ago and mods never interacted with users ever. Also, you don't need money to run freebsd-update, and with all the ads and the pass and the mods working for free if the users don't feel insulted by reading"we didn't have enough money" (for 13 years) nothing can save them.
