The fediverse is mainly oriented towards normal person social media users IMO, I don't really mess with it besides a few nitch ones that are mainly refuges from subreddits I used to like.

You gotta be kidding. The feed on the biggest instance, run by the guy who wrote Mastodon, is mostly extreme woke stuff. Hundreds of pics of trannies showing their new look, etc. Dick pics, porn, whore advertisements, you name it. If you join Mastodon, choose ANY other instance. Unless that's your thing, lol

go bac- OH WAIT! YOU CAN'T!! 4CUKS IS KILL! lmao
But in all seriousness, you must be new here if you don't know about the "autocorrect". And indeed, the concept of the fediverse as a collection of social media platforms without the evil corporations is very much geared towards normal people (NPCs) who don't realize the necessity to abscond from such websites and platforms in the first place.

uh yeah?? thats fuarrrkin awesome as hell??!
too bad that other people just existing and sharing stuff about their lives is too offensive to you. dont worry, you arent wanted on "woke" platforms anyway and everyone is happier without bigoted sensitive snowflakes like you who get triggered at the sight of a trans person. sayonara!

I don't mean social media in the technical sense but the particular form of photo blogging/clout posturing that mainstream "social media" sites cater too.

Ha ha, good one.

There isn't any autocorrect in your post or my post. Do you even know what "autocorrect" means?
>And indeed, the concept of the fediverse as a collection of social media platforms without the evil corporations...
Correct
>is very much geared towards normal people (NPCs) who don't realize the necessity to abscond from such websites and platforms in the first place.
That's so wrong it's semi-retarded. Normal people are the ones using the corporate platforms like Fakebook, Eks, etc. Other-than-normal people abscond *from* corporate platforms *to* fediverse and other platforms.
>>44327
>uh yeah?? thats fuarrrkin awesome as hell??!
Great. Go for it if that's your thing.
>too bad that other people just existing and sharing stuff about their lives is too offensive to you.
Defensive overreaction. It's not offensive to me. It's BORING to see the same stuff endlessly. I don't personally give a rat's ass one way or the other about woke culture.
>dont worry, you arent wanted on "woke" platforms anyway and everyone is happier without bigoted sensitive snowflakes like you who get triggered at the sight of a trans person. sayonara!
"I quit."
"No, you're fired!"

I think wanting the vanilla ego-blogging experience that the Twitters, Instagrams, and Tiktoks of the world emphasize, is pretty lame and tasteless. Fediverse sites maybe be superior platforms that aren't actively abusing their users. Instead of redefining what social media on the web is, they mostly cater to pre-existing popular expectations about what "the facebook" does. Because they're built around lousy preconceived notions, they mostly suck.
Tequila · 2025-04-19 17:32
I like the infrastructure of the Fediverse, that part is definitely better than centralized corporate social media, but most fedi projects are products nobody wants. A lot of privacy-minded or not-oversocialized people are turned off by their formats in the first place (username and post history, following people instead of topics/discussions, etc.), and the average social media user is not interested in moving to small communities with harder to use websites, and few from *either* camp wants to live under the tinpot dictator moderation that takes hold when a neurotic person who's never felt power before has his own little fiefdom. Yes you can move instances, but the hands-off instances tend to get completely blocked by the powertripper ones. So instead of a more united fediverse, you get clusters of likeminded instances preaching to each other with little overlap, never a threat to the big boys.
I'm disappointed that even lainons ITT will defend the online cliquification that happens on the fediverse, whether that's earnest or out of spite. And it's often the cliques that eat each other alive.

>>44096 I used lemmy for a few years, until it became flooded with extremists during the US election last year. Now it's just a toxic mess.
Ender · 2025-08-19 05:00
I self-hosted my own instance for a few years, and it eventually was a relieve to unplug it. A couple things to say.
Regarding the Fediverse and how it works:
- I learned ActivityPub is not a well defined protocol, and the tooted compatibility between softwares it provides is only theoretical. In practice, they have to hack there way around what Mastodon implements.
- Because of blocklists at the server level there is no way for the end user to know if the message they have posted will reach its target destination. You can try to interact with a user you follow from a server that derezzed your instance and you could never know unless you go out of your way to find information about the status of federation between said servers. The whole fediblock thing blows massive dong for this reason alone. Instance admin ultimately choose who the user can talk to.
- corporate presence is very limited, which is a good thing.
- Generally, everything that >>45284 said is true
Regarding my own experience of the fediverse:
- I didn't fit in at all, and still processing why. It was very cliquie, but I'm obviously part of the problem.
- I felt increasingly weird about those parasocial relationships I had with people who barely acknowledged my existence but whomstent I knew every life details, which they shared.
- There was no easy way to filter out content by topic rather than user. Lemmy is a step in this direction, but this is just Reddit with less users.
- For this reason, sharing sincere thoughts or things about my hobbies felt useless pretty quickly. I know it would be drowned in a sea of soykafposts, idpol brainrot, and stale memes from 3 months ago
Writing it down, I realize it's more about social media in general than the fediverse but oh well.

I tried using it, but it has so less activity that there's nothing to do especially for people like me who just lurk and don't post.
