Are you learning any languages?

Netrunner · 2024-12-15 16:26
I am currently learning spanish, i plan on also learning portuguese since it is extremely similar to spanish and a lot of people speak it. In the future i want to learn russian too :)(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

>>43438 I'm planning to learn Finnish since I want to migrate in the next 2 years but it seems like a pain in the ass after looking up how long are their words or the fact that it barely comes from Latin

I'm currently learning Russian in college, prof is native which is cool and helps If someone reading this wants to learn Russian and is afraid of it being difficult because of their alphabet; it's surprisingly easier than you think. A bit weird a first but you get used to it. 3 genders (masculine/feminine/neutral, like german if I'm not wrong)
Anamika · 2024-12-27 16:29
I've been learning English for a while now. Maybe next year I will start learning Russian, Japanese or German. I've fallen into a kind of loop, where I never feel ready to stop "formally learning" a language when I could perfect it a little bit more. But I am curious to get access to other movies/series/books/articles, etc. in their original language (also, not everything is translated to the languages I know, so it's like opening a door to a new consoom realm, full of things I wouldn't even know existed if I didn't learn the language they are in in the first place).

Do something better with your time. Idk, learn Japanese or go straight to Russian instead of starting to learn Portuguese.

Debating learning toki pona but chances of actually getting to use it seem slim. Esperanto just sounds too bastardized that's no fun id be better off just learning Spanish or Portuguese or Italian at that point. >>43441 Ive been wanting to learn just the Cyrillic alphabet so I can at least identify relatively familiar words in writing.

>>43629 Moh idioma sexy e tu mete essa, vtc lain-anão do krl OP, don't listen to him, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Portuguese can be hard because of the slangs (just like spanish), but you can do it, you'll have lots of fun
Agent Jones · 2025-01-03 18:26
ive been learning russian on and off like 3 years and im still absolutely terrible at it. Im probably at a point where if i started studying it properly i could get pretty good pretty fast though. >>43634 Cyrillic alphabet is pretty easy. While duolingo isnt that great overall if you use it for russian alphabet u can basically know it after a few hours of tapping on their little alphabet section separate to the main course. The harder parts come in more with random things being pronounced not exactly how theyre spelled, and you just have to learn those (thanks russian language)

Pulse · 2025-01-04 05:33

Learning Chinese because I have relatives in China. It's so hard. Also I miss the old fullchan /lang/ board
Cypher · 2025-01-11 02:01
I've been learning Chinese for over 2 years. Since I started I've had different factors motivating me at different periods. When I started I mostly wanted to learn it to advance my career and to be able to travel internationally. Now I'd say it's more out of a personal interest in Chinese culture and the people living there. I wish there were more opportunities to improve my speaking in person. It feels like I'm learning the language very mechanistically and with so much more emphasis on reading or understanding grammar than fluidity in speech or writing. Language learning apps seem to be more like dating apps, and the apps always demand too much personal information (you need to confirm a phone number and email, and post a picture; Chinese people also try to get you to use WeChat). I also hate that there is no pinyin input FOSS keyboard for android. I learned German for a few years, but forgot most of it. I'd like to pick it back up.

I'm on and off learning Japanese, mostly to access that part of the web. In case anyone here is profficient, I have a weird question. Dictionaries list "じ" as an alternative on'yomi for 二. What's a word where the kanji is pronounced that way?
Yet Another Lainon · 2025-01-11 05:44
>>43438 I would like to start learning Esperanto this year. Lernu.net seems really good place! Is there a good English-Esperanto dictionary? It can be a website or (preferably) a book. I think I will try to learn Latin (or perhaps Koine Greek) next, after becoming relatively good at Esperanto. I used to try to learn Japanese but the kanji were too hard for me (or maybe I just didn't use effective learning techniques). If you are interested in learning Japanese, my recommendation is to learn kana (Hiragana + Katakana) as soon as possible. If you don't, it becomes a burden until you learn both.

>>43799 https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/二 It seems to appear in names and I'm assuming loan words and technical jargon might be another place to look but I am not having any luck finding a way to search for words this way. Since I dont really know Japanese just a few words casually picked up I'm only finding names at the moment like >隆二 Ryuuji りゅうじ I found a possible one https://jisho.org/word/二乗 >二乗 Usually read as >にじょう Jisho says it also can be read as >じじょう But normally that is written with this kanji >事情 https://jisho.org/search/事情

H.R. Giger · 2025-01-12 05:23
>>43849 Thanks. Apparently じじょう is mostly used by old people nowadays. >事情 That's a completely different word. According to jisho.org: >事情 1. circumstances; conditions; situation; reasons; state of affairs >二乗 1. square (of a number); multiplying (a number) by itself; second power You probably meant 自乗, which is more coherent with the pronunciation.
Special Agent Bob · 2025-01-12 13:53
>>43853 Well yes I know it is a different word but when spoken unless it's one of those cases of the pitch of a word determining meaning it still is a homophone. Though honestly I was at first thinking it was just using an entirely different word to describe a mathematical concept because it sort of made sense enough to me lol

>>43438 I'm learning japanese for a few weeks now. I've finished hiragana and started katakana a few days ago. It's just getting kind of confusing because I'm literally learning the same sounds but in different letters, it just feels weird.

Learning Russian, Church Slavonic, Esperanto. Was learning German on my own time but had to stop. Want to learn biblical Hebrew, Koine Greek, and lojban. The natural languages all have cultural, historical, or religious significance to me; the conlangs are simply fascinating. While Esperanto is inelegant and at times even ugly, and most of the community are white liberals and their mystery meat buddies, I'm simply fascinated by the fact that an artifical language was created and is now spoken by...well, hundreds of thousands to possibly millions, although I don't trust any statistic. Allegedly there are even "native" speakers taught by their parents, although a professor of mine claimed that linguists studied the phenomenon and were convinced kids don't acquire Esperanto like they do a natural language. Lojban to me is paradoxical. I think the reasons for developing it were bullshit invented by a low-functioning autist with no ability for nuance or context - it's a "logical language" and its English-speaking proponents generally make very low-tier complaints about English such as that "to, two, and too sound alike!" as if anyone with two brain cells to rub together can't tell the difference - or as if that doesn't actually vary by regional dialect. Still, I'm fascinated by Lojban's grammar which reminds me of computer code (I am completely ignorant of coding, although I'd like to learn) or maybe of Japanese grammar (which I'm also woefully ignorant of). The phonology of Lojban is very aesthetically pleasing to me. Most base words just feel and sound nice to say, although longer compounds can be strange or offputting. I also really like the attitudinals, small utterances of usually two or three syllables that can convey a lot of meaning like emotional background to the following sentence or indicating it as a "polite request" or command, and so on. Lojban's words are produced by comparing Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, English, Spanish, and Russian, but most of them are very unique, while some might bear passing resemblance to words in other languages. For instance 'prenu' means person/people and tricu (pronounced like tree+shoe) is a tree, while morsi is to die. Unfortunately since I'm in an intense university program I just don't really have a lot of time for pursuing my interests including language learning, so with Esperanto I'm quite the 'eterna komencanto' and with Lojban I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Occidental/Interlingue is cool too, but it is so Romance-European that you might as well just learn Italian or Spanish and then you can understand both that language and Occidental.
