what's all the fuss about utorrent?
Unsigned · 2024-09-21 04:08
so much fuss about utorrent being rigged with adware or whatever, you don't expect to believe this!! I have been using it forever and i am obsessed with monitoring my computer, i would have at least suspected something but all seems right from my side.
what do you think??

any of these are preferable now

I use mostly qbittorrent but sometimes when I can't connect to any seed I use uTorrent because somehow it is able to connect while qbittorrent can't.
I don't know what is the fuss all about. Maybe it is because the free version has ads.

utorrent was horribly bloated and cyberhumped even 15 years ago. I can't even imagine how soykafty it must be present day, present time. if you ask me, deluge for ever.

You developed an emotional attachment to utorrent when you started using it as a teenager.

You're either schizo or a corporate bootlicker consoomer who loves being sold to.
I don't know how it is present day, present time. But when I was using utorrent (pre-2010s to late 2010s), it had ads on the side and top part of the gui. Personally, I didn't care about the ads at first because "I wanted to support the devs". That was until utorrent started spawning adware child-processes that had audio. I remember that soykaf jump scaring the fuarrrk out of me the first time it happened.
I was using Windows at the time. I figured it was the main utorrent process itself making the audio. I muted utorrent in the mixer so the ads could run silently in the background. Then 30mins passed, and I heard another ad. I opened up the audio-mixer and I found another process making the sound, so I muted it. Another 30mins passed, and I heard the ads AGAIN. After repeating the same process a couple of times, I opened up Task Manager to see what the fuarrrk was going on. I seen that the adware child-process name was the same BUT with a random number at the end of it every time:
>(e.g.) Adware_name-1289371.exe
>30 mins pass
>Adware_name-85932712.exe
I'm assuming Windows figures it's a different program since the name is always different due to the random number at the end of it. And since it's technically a different program every time, it runs it at wherever your max volume is currently at. I uninstalled utorrent and that soykaf went away with it (thankfully). If you're going to torrent, then use qbitTorrent, so far I have no problems with it. uTorrent in my eyes is malware at this point, and basically you're a fuarrrking retard if you think otherwise.

utorrent is what we used back in 2007 or whenever. It was the entry level torrent client for teenagers. What the OP is displaying is the power of oppositional defiance and misplaced loyalty (identification with the external, the psychophysical). If you tell him not to do something, he'll dig in and do it even more. If you tell him to do what he's doing, he'll do something else. The appearance of complex dynamic behavior is completely false, it's an illusion. Very simple underlying emotional patterns are at work. It's one of the more annoying manifestations of arrested development and maladaptation.
Reminds me of this song:

"I want to be good, I want to be brave! I will listen always, so I will never be a slave."

lol, believe me i never had that, u torrent only showed me image ads on the side panel and i don't care about that.
>Task Manager
i always monitor it but never seen what you are talking about, my simple explanation is that not all the versions all the same, some are good to go!

>misplaced loyalty
i use something for years and it never causes me any issues and always works properly, why would i want to change that?
>btw i actually gave up utorrent for tixati
figured with all what people are saying about the adware and stuff, it's would be wise to move to a safer alternative.

It's mediocre at best. I've used qbittorrent, transmission, tixati, etc. They're all better. I like qb the least for whatever reason, just never liked it, but it works.
You should move on.

Why do you feel the need to "always monitor it" if there's nothing wrong with it? Kind of counter intuitive if your point being is there's nothing wrong with uTorrent. You also don't talk about how you're monitoring your computer, and what exactly you are looking out for.
>"my simple explanation is that not all the versions all the same, some are good to go!"
Which versions and why?

After this post, I even began questioning if it was really uTorrent or not since it has been a good couple of years. But after some quick searching, I found the name of the child-process that was causing the adware audio. Look up uTorrent "webhelper.exe" or "helper.exe". You will see that I was not the only one who had this problem. It seems to be a common issue. Even for those who still use uTorrent today.
For context, I was using the latest version of uTorrent at the time (this was roughly 5 to 6 years ago). But to re-iterate, I would like to know which versions of uTorrent you believe are good, and why, despite the fact there are better alternatives out there. Lastly, with the assumption you are still running uTorrent today (with ads shown or at worst, directly supporting uTorrent), why you choose to support the company behind uTorrent despite their shady practices of profiting off their users and the bittorrent protocol/license in such scummy ways.

µTorrent
Thank you for this moment of nostalgia. I run QD now like everyone, for the same reasons as I used µ before.
As long as it get me the things, it's fine in my book.
I don't rememeber the audio adds.

uTorrent 2.2.1 is considered the best version of the client, and is free of adware and malware present in later versions. Not only does it "just werk" it's also confirmed to have faster pert discovery and speeds than even the most recent alternatives such as qbittorrent, deluge, etc. I like transmission too, but uTorrent 2.2.1 is the one.

Any concerns about security? Is it open source? Can we audit it?
Lady Jessica · 2024-12-24 04:20
in addition to the other stated reasons, private torrent trackers explicitly ban people who use utorrent. so theres not a real reason to have it
Lady 3Jane.. · 2024-12-24 04:25
I'm surprised it still exists to be honest. It used to be the best one once, slightly controversial due to being closed source, and even more controversial due to things people have posted ITT. There's absolutely no reason to use it nowadays though. Just download qbittorrent.
Wintermute · 2024-12-24 08:56
It's proprietary, that's reason enough to avoid it. Especially when there's so many FLOSS alternatives out there.
BOB · 2025-04-21 10:05
I thought usenet had one and torrent was dying...?
