Actual cyberpunk communities

Where are some actual cyberpunk sites where you can discuss cyberpunk lit and culture? Lainchan feels less cyber focused these days and there are more and more mentally ill cretins from a certain 4chins board here. The only alternative is Reddit and discord, which are about as soykaf as 4chins except full of script following liberals instead of retired right wingers. I just want a place where I can talk about dystopian fiction, tech, postmodernist theory, anarchy, and stupid haxx0r lore. What other sites do people use?
Sipho Nkosi · 2024-09-19 07:01
cyberpunk is ded kid there are no CP sites unless you mean cheesy cheese pizza. dead subculture. dead genre. dead internet.
Erik Johansson · 2024-09-19 08:02
This the only one I know that has/had normal sounding discussion. I guess there exist some on some private network or such, but the higher barrier to entry probably turn them into boring echo chambers.

Cyberpunk was the romantic dystopia of the (70s?) 80s and 90s. I think less and less people find interest in it because we realized and zoomed past its premises, and the dystopia of our times is becoming something else entirely (some kind of medievalcore technocratic society, idk).
Ein · 2024-09-20 05:16
Just report them. I find the mods take care of them since they tend to never follow the rules.

You made me read the rules again and I realized OP is technically whining about "quality" and "new users" and whatnot.

I kinda like smug, but realy, it's a dead subculture. All the subcultures are dead. We're all dead.

I recall there was once a cyberpunk chan (not lainchan).
Text based, not an imageboard IIRC. It was a library of everything cyberpunk. lo-fi (pixelated?) banners.
Sadly without my burned data, I have no way of finding it again, no way of getting back.
Comfy memories are just static on the wire now, like tears in the rain.
Does anyone else know the way back? Does anyone else have the data slug waypoint, the URL?

I may have recovered my own memory engram:
https://dangeru.us/
(It seems like an updated web design style to what I remembered, with data post logs wiped)
...and along the way picked up a cyberpunk meta list that may be of use to others...

everyone lives in a cyberpunk community now that google microsoft facebook amazon ruined the world by turning it into global smartshyt CCTV (i.e 400 cameras on every house that face everywhere not just their lawn)

Red herring. They don't need any of that stuff to watch you. You aren't consenting, and no one else is consenting for you either. Turning people against each other is just a convenient way to stay in control.
Snowden? Bullshit.
Assange? Bullshit.
[Hero they provided for you here]? Bullshit.
It's all bullshit. Stories. Myths. Misdirects. Made up. Not real. Not accurate. Not true.

Probably more than 50% of posts here are /r9k/ "I feel depressed/alienated/etc" posts, this place would go up in quality if they weren't allowed, though it would be more dead as well

You don't "get" imageboards. You act like these posters only post the things you're mentioning. Just like you come into my threads and act like I'm a single purpose machine that only posts about numerology. It's just a categorical error, a fundamental failure of comprehension.
Perhaps it's not those posters who don't belong here, but you who doesn't belong.

Cyberpunk community? If you want a true cyberpunk experience go to an Asian mega city, i'd suggest; Hong Kong, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzen, or Taipei. You could also visit Tokyo or Seoul, though they are a little less cyberpunk like because they are more clean.

that community exists wherever you make it, lain. read a book and talk to someone about it. do something cool and you will attract the people you're looking for.

if you read a bit more of the first wave of 'cyberpunk' media, neo-feudalist themes have been present throughout albeit some more explicitly than others. but even neuromancer described the emergence of dynastic corporate aristocracies. the diamond age comes to mind as one more overt in this, as well as the aesthetics of the wealthy in altered carbon. or the crysalids, which was a precursor to the genre.
I think I want to defend the genre (many of which its authors are still producing titles, btw) because it came as a response to high science fiction of the time which could barely conceal its zeal for such things. the foundation trilogy, for instance, features a small enclave of scientists who are able to predict with a high degree of certainty the next several thousand years of culture and prepare for their galactic civilization's design. they do this by using their superior technology to economically, spiritually, and otherwise informatically manipulate the factions that arise with less enlightened goals from their own as they slowly rebuild civilization. it's for this reason that I think of terms as "post-cyberpunk" as a little silly - the materials were always already there, if anything the way society seems to be going says something about the genre's persistence even if the specific technologies or other more periodic trends, like aesthetics, are different.
that stated i think of you're bored with cyberpunk it might be time for you to more broadly explore sci-fi too. the responses to golden age's high science fiction include works that wound up not making the cut of cyberpunk but are still great - known as the new wave of science fiction or simply The Movement, some cyberpunk authors will refer to this, but for instance my favorite sci-fi author Ursula le Guin was part of this trend.
also you could check out legend of the galactic heroes, another high science fiction story which demonstrates a war between democratic and aristocratic planetary alliance, democracy being depicted as very dirty, both sides depicted as highly nepotistic technocracies.

imagine fedposting on others who are just trying to discuss literature. truly broke style behavior.

that poster has a point and you need to be a little more respectful of the culture you've replaced. lainchan was created with the explicit intention of not being 4chan and especially not being r9k. the admins were very clear that they considered it a worthless culture and that lainchan was meant to be something much better. guys who think there's some blanket cultural assumptions they can make that apply to all chans and then proceed under those assumptions have always been the cancer.

neat, which city? Also, since you live in one, do you feel like you live in some kind of cyberpunk movie? Asian megacities to me just feel other worldly compared to western cities.

Doesn't rule out necromancy. Such things can be revived, just in different forms.
But that doesn't matter.
Cyberpunk culture never REALLY existed in reality. It remained for a time but fiction. What you may consider "Cyberpunk Culture" was nothing but larping. Yet, in our modern times and the troubles which they come with we are presented with the opportunity to make such culture a reality.
What I'm trying to say is that since such a culture never really existed that does not mean it cannot exist. We now have the opportunity to create it.

>What you may consider "Cyberpunk Culture" was nothing but larping
"young guys with no social lives, no sex lives and no hope of ever moving out of their mothers’ basements […] They’re total wankers and losers who indulge in Messianic fantasies about someday getting even with the world through almost-magical computer skills, but whose actual use of the Net amounts to dialing up the scatophilia forum and downloading a few disgusting pictures. You know, cyberpunks."
Bethke, 1995.
Nevertheless, I agree. if everyone who made a thread asking for real cyberpunk hacker community actually took agency for themselves then they wouldn't have to beg for one like they are doing now.
