Who founded lainchan and when? Was there any admin drama?
LAINCHAN.ORG · 2024-09-18 14:50
No one created Lainchan. It was here when humans arrived. All humans know is that Lainchan has always existed. There was never any drama, only two janitors experiencing madness and disappearing into the darkness. Do not ask more questions. Do not look into the void. Ask silly questions on >>>/q/ only. The ringing of the bell commands you.

Ok officer, I'll consider not asking such national security threatening questions.

Okay OP big post incoming.
Lainchan was created back in 2006 by Lowtax who died by suicide a few years ago. He passed the site on to Kalyx who passed it to Appleman12345 who works at satellite manufacturing plant. A very cyberpunk job. The purpose of lainchan was after the /cyb/ threads on 4chan became inhospitable after an invasion of mechanatrons and was made up of a bunch of people recurited from the Japanese-Russian site Milkcafe. Its basically a 4chan for cyberpunks and wannabe app devs.
The big split happened in 2018 when there were fights over the development of Lain OS and the production of the Lainchan movie, which was only ever in the early stages. There were huge disagreements over which project should get the development funds. Sadly, this led to fights between Kalyx and Appleman, and a couple of /p ol/ people showed up. One of these guys, lets call him John, managed to get a mod position. Now as it turns out, these guys were actually AI bots sent Palantir to fuarrrk with us. Kinda like Terminator. Due to naivety, a security flaw allowed John to nuke the entire site and steal all the backups. This was the final straw. Kalyx left to join Northwestern Airlines where he know works as a flight engineer.
The damage created by the invasion effectively split the site in two at a metaphysical level. So there were two lainchans, and the other one got named arisuchan to stop confusing people. Overtime, this problem was fixed when a dozen of Kalyx' ex retainers committed digital seppuku because they thought he was dead. Early lainchan had this weird samurai ethic because everyone was reading Nitobe Inazo obsessively back then. Nobody really knows what happened to Arisuchan. It basically disappeared and its users have never been heard from again. Naturally, Kalyx supporters are still a bit mad at the current site administration for letting Arisuchan just float away like a kid loosing hold of his balloon. There was a brief moment it resurfaced only to disappear again. I'd like to think they're still out there somewhere, working on the Lainchan movie... I guess its now called the Arisuchan movie? Never rmind
Sorry for the big wall of text but I'm summarizing like decades of history here.

Do satellite assemblers know how to avoid the ubiquitous gaze of satellite systems? That's the one thing thwarting my plans to save the world, or at least making them suicide.

They could have used load balancing, set up a decoy mirror site to redirect them to with a visual spoofed URL to shadowban them and put in place anti bot measures that dont use cloudflare or captcha, they exist.

the link is https://arisuchan.xyz/
>the only posts are from admins
theres only 1 admin (me) and yes most of the posts are me, that way theres at least something to look at and interact with, instead of it being totally devoid of posts
>it looks like someone copypasted the CSS from https://legacy.arisuchan.jp/
yes i stole their CSS for the most part, thats like complaining someone stole a jpeg, stuff on the internet is free. and i am literally copying a website so, what else would you expect i do?
>the entire vibe is kind of bad
what about the vibe do you dislike?
>they didn't put much effort into it
i actually put a decent amount of effort into it (just not advertising)
- i fixed lots of issues with the original CSS (namely for mobile viewing)
- i changed lots of the colors so things are more vibrant and there is slightly more contrast for better readability
- i made changes to vichans page templates to make pages slightly prettier
- i implemented a self-hosted captcha into vichan so people dont complain about external captcha datamining etc
- i pay money to host it on good infrastructure
>the secret boards weren't even included either
whats the point of having secret boards if there are no users on the public boards?
no hate, criticism is good. i dont really expect anything at all with the site to be honest. if there's changes you think i can make that would make the site more attractive to users then im open to hear your ideas.
ff you want to participate in bringing arisuchan back then you are free to, to my knowledge im the only person currently giving people that option.
we actually have a relatively active IRC community, feel free to come by and chat if you'd like

>the kind of posters you get on lain boards didn't exist anywhere on internet before kalyx made the site.
those types of users have always existed, just in different places. certain IRC communities most notably IMO
>I realized after that cloudflare would probably not be popular with the userbase you're seeking. lainchan used to use cloudflare as well but was famously screwed by them in a way i can't quite remember, but i think there was a news announcement about it. be careful
i realize this, hence the work i put into implementing the self-hosted captcha, i think that is typically the biggest complaint. posting and viewing public information does not have any implication of privacy, especially online. you cant trust the admin of any sites you use, cloudflare is just one other party of many that get included in that situation. the difference being, you arent submitting private data on an imageboard.
im very comfortable in terms of not being screwed over in the technical or monetary sense, so i dont have any worries there
one thing i think is always strange about the anti-cloudflare and similar discourse is that, the 2 biggest technological methods to stop imageboards from going to soykaf are:
- Web Application Firewalls
- captchas
its odd to me that imageboard users often have strong feelings against technologies that specifically address issues that most often kill smaller/new chans (bots posting spam/CP, DDoS attacks, exploiting underlying infra)
if i were a more paranoid individual, i might go so far as to say that type of discourse may even be manufactured and propagated intentionally to shrink the availability of actively maintained imageboards
>its honestly interesting how the concept of arisuchan evolved from its origins, even if the ideas we have about what it was will never capture that experience, it is perhaps good to have positive visions to strive for. good luck anon
thank you for the kind words, im interested to see if/how things might change. for now though, im just aiming to recreate whats been lost
if youd like to chat more, feel free to come by the site and id be happy to continue our convo in a thread or even our IRC server, take care

>if arisuchan users use my site, it will give the impression of arisuchan. if 4chan users used it, it would give the impression of 4chan (interestingly enough, lainchan seems to remind me of 4chan a bit now, i wonder why)
arisuchan is dead. most everyone who used it has grown up and doesn't use imageboards anymore, and the one's who do came here. no need for splitting communities now.

>those types of users have always existed, just in different places. certain IRC communities most notably IMO
I agree that there are some IRC servers with intelligent and kind people, but i feel that posting on IRC is different from posting on imageboard. lainchan founder Kalyx notably had serious issues with IRC and considered it to be toxic in that it distracted users from the board, wasted moderators' time and energy and encouraged a fairly opposite style of posting - prioritizing immediate attention over taking the time to make a quality post. i personally think its possible to have both, but when it comes to running an imageboard vs chat room completely different rules apply. its ultimately a better idea to focus resources on the board over the chat room, and to have board direction led by as little chatroom clique as possible.
>its odd to me that imageboard users often have strong feelings against technologies that specifically address issues that most often kill smaller/new chans (bots posting spam/CP, DDoS attacks, exploiting underlying infra)
its less paranoia inducing to understand that imageboard users simply enjoy being difficult. i can see logical arguments against importing certain solutions but i can also see the desire to hate any trend that feels common or prefabricated, in era of corporate homogeneity. some imageboard users want something patrician - a bespoke and elegant solution to their problems, others might want surprising effectiveness with unusual personality, while others want it to just werk. or to not work at all, but fun for trolling people. ironically there is also aesthetic reasons why captcha in particular might be unpopular, it creates friction as does Cloudflare to a lesser extent

there wasnt a need then. doesnt mean it didnt happen lol.
If there were problems with lain we've still basically got those problems afaik, maybe excepting the slightly crazy mods needed to stick up the advertisement
anyone know whats going on with seph these days ?

It was monk Anthony from the Jesuit order. Then it spread to all the monasteries - monks and nuns made short posts on message boards in the gardens, passed letters. Then this fashion spread to prisons.
