why is everything so simplified?
Eversince 2018 or 2016 it's been going downhill with the internet, google is fuarrrked up and no this isn't some "dead internet theory" bullshit, but more "it's easy to do x or y so everyone uses it". from the time i gain consciousness at the end of 2016 or since Terry Davis died god spit at us and left.
AND I BLAME THE END OF FLASH SUPPORT.

Most of the population are genuinely retarded and have never needed to operate anything more complicated than a mobile phone in their lives.
Vasya Pupkin · 2024-08-28 11:17
Because many decades of psyop media propaganda from multiple ideological, political, religious, and commercial sources finally effectively lobotomized much of the public. Even many of the ones who aren't physically retarded are rationally retarded now. Add to that the fact that ever increasing anxiety causes people to cling ever more tightly to absurd belief-systems as their security blankets. This will all continue to worsen until there is a major reduction in global human population resulting in a collapse of civilization similar to the bronze age collapse or the dark ages. Then, assuming humankind avoids extinction from climate change, there will be another "renaissance" and the whole cycle will repeat. Ho-hum.
Junichi Fujiwara · 2024-08-28 12:59
People choose easy, convenient, fun and simple over right, moral, true, real, whatever. And they do it every time. There's no conspiracy, it's not necessary, people don't care about your niche field of interest, they just want convenience without thinking. They just don't care that you hate it, they don't care if someone dies in a sweatshop, they got their McThing from BRAND and it was convenient and easy. As soon as it stops being that they toss it and get the next thing. Simple as.

move to toddler ui design.
I think win8 was a key player in it. Lots of people complained then but that didnt stop the march towards "clean" ui. In general society overall went minimalistic in design. 90s products vs now is a massive contrast.
Jane Doe · 2024-08-28 14:26
I dont think it has much to do with Flash support. It more is the use of algorithms gearing more toward advertising. The growth of Google taking over the entire internet. This lead to politicians getting involved with the internet and meddling with it treating it like it is their property because of the corporate interest involved.
Lunch · 2024-10-08 14:18
It was called surfing in the internet because you went from a website to another, never knowing where you would end or what you would see.
Flash support was dumped because early Iphones couldn't run it and they had to make animations/game for the deadbrains with deep pockets who use them. Plus it was unsafe.
My point is: those people killed the net. We should have an internet for phoneposters and an actual internet.

Base reason for everything wrong in the world, among them the Internet's increasingly centralized, spied upon, censored, streamlined state. Generally, anti-consumer companies, social media, politics, wars, pollution, corruption is enabled by simpletons.
Why does Google exist? Because their ads sell. Who are the ads force fed to? Retard useds, can't set up adblock or "ad rape feels good actually" cope.

Simulation dies because it is overloaded.

There have been a lot of mentions ITT of the normal masses being cattle that choose convenience, have no morals, etc. but njthat's an oversimplification. I mean do you get ethically sourced food, or better yet, make/grow your own? What about your clothes? Are you protesting this or that important cause? Because these are the issues that these normal people will make these exact same arguments about on their psyopped javascript-laden dumpsterfires.
"Convenient" in this context is just a derogatory way to say "effective", or, per Ellul, "technical". And effectiveness often requires sacrifices of other, more human, more moral values; or to put it another way, morals are expensive to maintain, and each person can only afford so many.
From the outside it looks like people are just flocking to the easiest thing, but that's just the aggregate. I think most people try very hard to be moral, and end up focusing on a couple areas, and then handling the rest as effectively as possible. When aggregated across everyone this results in each category having nearly everyone making the most effective choice, with a small minority of moralists going against the grain.
Mitnick · 2025-04-26 05:04

some examples of effectiveness vs morality in the tech privacy area:
- add cloudflare: less malicious activity
- ban tor: less malicious activity
- sell user data: more profitable website
- track users' browsing and target ads: better conversion rates

The "we all voted with our wallets" argument seems like unconvincing victim blaming to me. I consider myself a technical person and I'm fully aware I couldn't keep track of all the brands in the market and their practices, even within my field of expertise. There is a limit to how much you can know and keep track of, and companies exploit this to increase their profits. In a society where everyone was omniscient the "democracy of wallets" argument would make sense, but what is actually happening is a "dictatorship of the cognitive load", to put it in fancy terms.
I don't want my life to depend on me keeping track of which food producers have poisoned people in the recent past, this is why regulations exist. Imagine if every time you bought paint you had to take it to a lab to make sure it doesn't contain lead, but then you had to audit whatever lab you chose to conduct the tests, and so on. People don't have to do this with anything else, so why should they have to do it with tech and content platforms.
Undisclosed · 2025-04-26 07:02

Convenient isn't derogatory, it's just another point of view, and unrelated to effectiveness. Creating captive audiences and network effects (when the use of something depends on other people also using it) might be effective for a social media platform, but it is inconvenient for the user because it makes it harder for them to consider alternatives.
But you are right in your prognosis that individual consumer habits are not a realistic solution nor the correct approach to the problem.

>I mean do you get ethically sourced food, or better yet, make/grow your own? What about your clothes? Are you protesting this or that important cause?
I tend to agree with this. Most people don't have the time or the financial resources to act either morally or even for what would be in their own best interest long term. I know many lainons are NEETs, but imagine that you're a construction worker and just worked 40+ hours a week of hard labor and need to feed your kids. Are you going to doublecheck that the food at Walmart was ethically produced and/or meets certain requirements for pesticides? Do you even know what pesticide practices are best? Apply this with whatever other pet cause you care for, clothing, websites, cars etc. In reality, the argument of "voting with your wallet" is reserved for the privileged.

"vote with your wallet bro" is nonsense to anyone remotely paying attention. It's entry-level thinking. Things are so tied together that the only way to vote with your wallet is complete opt out and to create and maintain your own replacement.

'morals' is a loaded term, but research on altruism finds that around 15% of people have broad-reaching altruism (have a consistent, genuine desire to help others - even strangers - even when there is no personal benefit to doing so) while the other 85% mostly lack this (will assist others only if there's some sort of personal gain, whether material or psychological, only experience genuine altruism in very limited contexts such as towards close family or friends). So no, except for a minority of genuinely very good-natured people, most people aren't even trying to be moral

1. what research?
2. it isn't black and white
the same person can be selflessly altruistic in one context and indifferent in the other. any study or research portraying this as a dichotomy rather than a spectrum influenced by context can't be taken seriously. for example, if someone asked you here to explain a very complex subject you would probably dismiss them because they may be simply wasting your time, you have no way of telling if they are actually interested in your explanation. but if the same poster asked you, in person, I'm sure you would be more willing to help them

that's not an answer, the guy wrote a bunch of things, be more specific
and just skimming his wikipedia page it seems like his position was more or less the common sense answer: that context is the determining factor
>the best predictor of whether a student would stop to help was how hurried they felt.
are you sure you didn't misread whatever "research" of his you claim to be referring to?
>some things are basically categorical
negation by itself is not an argument unfortunately, nor a meaningful contribution to the conversation. it is an observable fact that you can be more altruistic in a determined situation and less altruistic in a different situation
