It seems like people stopped caring a few years ago, but the "aquariums" are still open.
For the uninitiated, on 4chan it was discovered that there are numerous "aquariums" on google maps, with their names being something like "WZ Aqarium" or "KE Aquarium", but when you look at the google street view for the "aquarium" it is a residential house. When looking through public records, you cannot find any of these "aquariums" to actually be registered businesses.
When looking at the google street view of the aquariums, there are multiple patterns you can notice (e.g stars).
More interestingly though, if there are any reviews for the "aquarium" it has nothing to do with aquariums. Some of them even link to pictures of random kids.
There are theories, but nothing substantial. Here are some of them:
- Thailand use to have child brothels which were called aquariums as a cover. This may be a continuation of the practice
- They are safehouses
- They have access to secret tunnels
