How to live like the 90s-00s in current year
Crash Override · 2024-06-25 11:28
A live with no social media and phone, having more DIY, Punk, hacking style and stuff, how is that possible in current years?
My ideas are having so low or no use of social media, using Linux or BSDS, having a custom rom at phone (or dumphone) and using alternative sites like image boards, IRC, old/niche forums, going to punk gigs and raves, learn music instrument, learn about cybersec, download music and movies, piracy in general, dress alt, make a personal webpage, using less javascript and using alternative's to the GAFAM soykaf.
Any ideas?

Read more books. People were generally a bit smarter, because they didn't have as much technology to constantly be distracted by. Sure there was TV, but it was nowhere near as invasive as social media and smartphones are today

That's really a nice thing to do, another is collecting physical media i think
Jane Doe · 2024-06-25 11:59
linux in the 90s was a lot soykaftier, you can still find old versions of distros from then, maybe consider trying one.
consider not even having a cellphone, hardly anyone I knew had one till like 2010+
if you travel, use a road atlas. Get a good one that covers everywhere you think you'll wind up going, and maybe a better one for your region.
If you regard yourself yourself a political moderate but laugh at the ridiculousness of anything like 'gay marriage'. There's a host of things like this.
Drano · 2024-06-25 12:10

>gay marriage is ridiculous
do you now that nowadays you're not allowed to say this aloud? i knew a guy who did it and lost connections to almost all his relatives. being gay is a prerequisite to living developed world and ass sells better than labor. we live in a society after all
Special Agent Bob · 2024-06-25 12:14
You can do this on your own for the most part. Stopping social media and not using your smartphone are easy enough 95% of the time. The real problem is that you can't expect other people to do the same. If you delete your social media (which is a good idea regardless) you just have to live with the fact that every other part of the internet has been largely abandoned in favor of these giga-platforms and there's no way to go back. Unless you're fine scrolling through long dead forums it's a lonely digital existence.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2024-06-25 13:57
Sounds too LARPy to be sustainable. Just try out new things and see what you like and get rid of the things you don't like.
>>41511
>gay marriage is ridiculous
>neurosuggesting marriage in general being a requirement for legal rights itself is anything but ridiculous
Cereal Killer · 2024-06-25 14:57
i think you strongly idealize the 90s/00s in the developed world
>punk
sounds like gringo nonsense
>more diy
unironically just, do it lol. it's cheaper and more fun than the alternative
>{tech stuff}
should be left to the absolute bare minimum and replaced with real people
>raves
meh
mehhhh, pretty larpy indeed. every day i wish to smash all my modern tech but I'm too deep in the system to do so (for now)

Please continue to show us how dumb you are, I'm sure you can do better.

Do you really want to use an MS-DOS based operating system? Do you have any idea how soykafty Unix desktop environments were or how hard it was even getting a Linux distro set up on your machine? Do you want to go back to the days when your relatives would yell at you because they couldn't make calls while you surfed the net? Its probably not healthy to idealize certain eras. There's nothing wrong with saying you like the aesthetics or style of a period or being interested in retro tech but don't be obsessed with the 90s because it was the 90s.
So we have to ask, what's reasonable and feasible?
1. Using a dumb phone
2. Using a music player and wired headphones or a boom box (older iPods are good but if you really want retro go for an old Walkman cassette player)
3. Doing your computing on MS-DOS, FreeDOS, or Linux/BSD while keeping a Windows machine for normal people tasks. These OSes should work with any modern computer you own.
4. Getting a PS2 to double as a console and a DVD/CD player
5. Get a CRT TV and a CRT monitor for your retro computer. You can go to PC recycling centers to find older peripherals and maybe find adapters online to make it work with your machine
6. Either go without a desktop environment or use something like NsCDE. If you want something with an old feel but don't like anything CDE like then try vanilla XFCE or MATE.
7. Invest in a bookshelf.
>>41512
Yeah we all know gay marriage is bullshit but don't derail the fuarrrking thread please.

>Invest in a bookshelf.
I like this. and get reference books. Pick up a big old encyclopedia, dictionaries for any relevant languages, atlases, that sort of thing, and use them instead of wikipedia and other webresources to the greatest extent practical.
>>41517
sure, whether the government should care about marriage at all seems arguable, but marriage is a thing regardless of what the government says. Gay marriage is not a thing regardless of what the government says.

Thirldworlder here, but yeah, most american punk is like kicking dead whales down the beach

Where are the real people?

>Gay marriage is not a thing regardless of what the government says.
Factually it is a thing, as in there are married gay people and always have been, via common law marriage. Whether you or some other people accept it is a different matter.

Just build a time machine and go back to the 90s. Or create a 90s VR environment and glue some cheap VR goggles to your head with epoxy

Punks are the most fake subculture. Its nothing but conformity with those people. Don't get involved with them. The only good thing was STRAIGHT EDGE. Everything else is bullshit.

I use almost all old forums. I have a smartphone but you can probably get along without one, I used to use mostly fdroid and apps that work with the fake google services framework which at the time was not a lot.
You might be able to use some apps in an android emulator on your computer.
Like the rest of this stuff, people do it every day.

One of the worst kind of persons i meet IRL was "straight edge" he self proclaimed punk but he really don't like punk music and the politics, he was a fake trans too

>Do you really want to use an MS-DOS based operating system?
Feasible, most jobs and professions can be performed with only a mail client and a word processor.
>Do you have any idea how soykafty Unix desktop environments were or how hard it was even getting a Linux distro set up on your machine?
OP did include the 00s were that was no longer the case.
>Do you want to go back to the days when your relatives would yell at you because they couldn't make calls while you surfed the net?
same as above
>So we have to ask, what's reasonable and feasible?
>1. Using a dumb phone
The biggest issue is having to contact businesses and work colleagues through Whatsapp, so mostly no, what is more reasonable is minimizing phone usage to the bare minimum.
>2. Using a music player and wired headphones or a boom box (older iPods are good but if you really want retro go for an old Walkman cassette player)
That's so easy, I have even seen normal users ditch wireless earphones because having to charge them was being such an inecessary inconvenience. Digital music players and cassette players are available on chinese websites for cheap.
>3. Doing your computing on MS-DOS, FreeDOS, or Linux/BSD while keeping a Windows machine for normal people tasks. These OSes should work with any modern computer you own.
Windows is now inferior for normal people tasks, you can install on whatever OS you want on your computer, best OS for normal people tasks is Android, i think it's preferable to have proprietary soykaf run on a separate piece of hardware that can be put aside inside a drawer.
>6. Either go without a desktop environment or use something like NsCDE. If you want something with an old feel but don't like anything CDE like then try vanilla XFCE or MATE.
NsCDE is slow and broken as fuarrrk, it's pythonic soykaf. If you want CDE just install CDE, it's open source now, if you only want the look then fvwm is far superior.

I dont think you know what a music subculture is. If everyone was fully detached from any commonality there wouldn't really be a subculture to begin with. Though it likely got later diluted because of changes to the internet and pop culture where people would be exposed to the aesthetics without really even hearing the music or even liking it. So then there became a situation where people who liked a certain aesthetic were being lumped into the subculture they never were a part of and may or may not have even intended to pretend to be a part of it. Just liking punk music or the aesthetics doesnt make someone a punk inherently if they dont really associate with multiple aspects at once. It isnt so much conformity as it is whether or not someone actually fits in with a group they try to be a part of. Not to say that I dont also find contrarians to be as conformist as any conformist but I wouldnt lump everyone in a subculture as being a contrarian conformist.

Nah they force you to use everything from Zoom to Microshit Teams now, One Drive, Google rape cloud etc. Unless you flip burgers, you will have tons of soykaf software forced onto you.

I use Linux as my daily drive and for school and i use the laptop that in my job they give for the work with the accounts that they made me. I don't use office soykaf outside of that, maybe i use teams for school but is not an issue

a big part for me is not tech(i do only use 2010 peak consomer tech though) its clothing.
A big reason why the 90s and 00 have a different feel to them at least here in ee is that nobody was buying 20 soykafty shirts and 10 soykafty pairs of pants but was buying good soykaf, rarely and the big point it was locally made on a machine.
So i like to focus on that i lucked out locally we still have a few trying to survive on this bossiness and most are still making the same clothes they made back then.
So i had them make me lot of dress shirts,3 different baggy pants,2 bomber jackets that both came out great and i got a shoe maker to make me 3 pairs of boots the old school way.
I recently got a roll of woodland cammo print fabric that i left them to turn into pants and she is working on them,it such a sweet lady.
I get shirts at a art college near me for cheap too.
so thats my attempt to get time stuck
Cypher · 2024-08-21 20:07
sure have fun with all that, just don't get mass surveilled or leave any finger print of any sort or disagree with the establishment narrative or become categorized as riskdividual or lose social credit score and keep working for a boss so you can pay rent to a landlord, but definitely hack the mainframe dude and keep buying silicon chips manufactured in the 3rd world for anarchy bro
