what makes cyberpunk aesthetics more dominant than say solarpunk or steampun in general, why is it much easier to find dystopian cyberpunk works like bladerunner, neuromancer, akira, lain, the matrix, 2077 and so on why is it hard to find solarpunk or steampunk movies or games?

i used to think that its bc normal people are suckers for hightech soykaf but lets be real, its prolly a problem with the authors the -punk genres need some sort of dystopia and mfs cant write for soykaf without electricity and computers oppressing ppl even more so with the sacred green energy, ig they cant envision it anywhere but utopias, which might be why solarpunk is even less common than steampunk

>>41394 >Solarpunk is too optimistic and devolves into sci-fi or cyberpunk anyway >Steam punk has been outlived because steam power was so early 20th century Cyberpunk is just the most relatable. Also humans crave dystopian stories.
Batou · 2024-06-17 03:44
>>41395 Exactly my thoughts. The way society is going cyberpunk is the most realistic. And I think deep down we all would rather have a cool aesthetic to go with it if we're going to live in a dystopia anyway.

fear grips people harder. Bad news sell easier than good news. Likely same is true for dystopia dominating stories. And in addition stories center around conflicts that need to be solved by the characters. If you want a big conflict you must arrive at a dystopian setting.

corpos have shoveled more money into appropriating cyberpunk than either of the other two. solarpunk is very new as well so it doesn't have a long history. biopunk is anti-capitalist anti-industry and too anti-corporate to ever be mass marketable. thanks to cyberpunk 2077 and the fuarrrking matrix there are whole generation of larpers waiting to be spoonfed slick corpo produced cyberpunk and thanks to peter thiel, harari and that nigger curtis yarvin there are a whole bunch of silicum valley techo apes larping as cyberpunks when they are just retarded neolib hipsters who like sci fi and transhumanism.

Solarpunk is just socialist utipianism with photovoltaics based on a yogurt ad while steampunk is mostly dorks gluing gear wheels onto their fedoras and peaked with the movie Wild Wild West. Cyberpunk on the other hand came from creative people observing and thinking about where technology and society is going. Namely a place with further advancing hi-tech and high population density which lead to all the commonly depicted unrest and oppression while we as a species beginning to play god which prompts us with fundamental questions about what consciousness and humanity even is in the first place. Hence we keep coming back to this *-punk genre in particular. Because that's the one we're moving towards to. >>41403 >biopunk You mean something like Scorn?
HELIOS · 2024-06-19 23:41
Cyberpunk is the one that is actually happening.
Eldon Tyrell · 2024-06-20 14:53
>>41393 Because Cyberpunk is a genre, steampunk is largely an aesthetic, and the rest do not exist. Punk is not a suffix.
Emmanuel · 2024-06-20 16:40
>>41430 >punk isn't a suffix Boy, is this lainon in for a surprise once they discover any music genres ending with core or wave. >>41425 Pic related. But another poster mentioned biopunk and if it is what I think it is then that's going to be the nightmare beyond imagination we will get into if we survive our cyberpunk arc. Since once humanity cracks how the foundations of biologic life works and how to manipulate it to our advantage then that will usher in an era of organic robots that are self healing, reproducing and come in all sizes, from mountain to microbe.

anyone have good recs for biopunk fiction?

>>41432 You know what, I don't think this is true any more. I can imagine the end of capitalism, at least the ideological form of capitalism that emerged in the 19th century. It's already running on fumes. Not that such an outcome would be materially better. It means that institutions are breaking down, religious and cultural differences are causing more friction, and international relations are at a boiling point. It means that life is going to be very hard for at least a decade. But I can really imagine it and at this point... I'm ready to go for it.
Arisu Mizuki · 2024-06-21 01:36
>>41434 Seems obvious that capitalism was a product of the technology and culture of the time it emerged and it did change as technology and cultures changed but people that think capitalism will just be eternal crypto currency and NFTs are very short sighted ideologues. The better the tech to find resources and create new resources that is a complete end to scarcity and other means of distribution of resources and as result capitalism could not survive on artificial scarcity alone so it tries to struggle by creating scarcity with monopolies and warfare.

>>41434 19th century capitalism is definitely dead. Its mutated. Capitalism is always mutating. Its hard to see an alternative to capitalism because the basic issues of production haven't changed much. Linux is perhaps the only example of how a piece of high technology can be crowd funded and built as an alternative to corporate technologies but the free software movement has stagnated and the hacker dream is dead. Some militias and guerrilla groups out there are sophisticated enough to hold their own against modern armies. The nation-state is being defended by pole types, but it has to fend off cybernetic hiveminds, heavily armed tribes, schizo hackers, and militias. The system is breaking down but its not out for the 10 count yet. It could take maybe a century or more for it to go and the powers that be are trying to fight back to maintain the dystopia and there's a chance they could win. The world is going to get very very ugly over the next few years. >>41433 Nausica, the first three Resident Evil games and Dominion Tank Police is a sort of hybrid cyberpunk and biopunk. There's a huge germ cloud that poisons the air and everyone is forced to wear respirators outdoors.

>>41438 >19th century capitalism is definitely dead I meant 20th century. As in 1900s. I don't think it's dead. I think it's being kept alive by parasites that want to keep it shambling forward as long as they can. >The system is breaking down but its not out for the 10 count yet. Yes obviously. The point of my post is that life without capitalism can be imagined.
